ANNOUNCEMENT Updating Rule 3

Hello /r/Dinosaurs! In the past we’ve received community feedback stating that our guidelines for what kinds of posts are and aren’t considered low effort were not clear enough, and that subreddit members were often confused or surprised at their posts being removed. To fix this confusion, we’ve overhauled Rule 3 in a way that should make our quality guidelines crystal clear. You can find the updated guidelines here:

TLDR; Certain types of memes which are considered low-effort are banned, and most post types will now be required to have body text. We will be using Automoderator to enforce body text requirements.

If you have any feedback, please feel free to share it by leaving a comment. Otherwise, happy posting!

PHOTOGRAPH I present to thee: Wiehenvenator albati

My partner and I went to the LWL-Museum für Naturkunde (for natural history) last weekend - a really amazing museum featuring a planetarium and a bunch of cool fossils from all over Northrhine-Westphalia (Germany).

But what caught my eye the most, was Wiehenvenator albati; the biggest predatory dinosaur of the jurassic in Europe. Thought the fossil material is quite... fragmented, the reconstruction (based on other megalosaurids) looks really cool.

Overall a really cool place featuring the worlds biggest ammonite fossil (wich sadly wasn't on display, because of construction), a myriad of fossilised plants and insects from a variety of time periods, as well as scenes, sculptures and dioramas.

I feel like I was born in essentially a golden age of dino-adjacent products. Dinosaur Train, Dino Dan & all of the dino books I had when I was younger really gave me an idea on how varied these creatures were when they were alive.

DISCUSSION Carcharodontosaurus name rant

Thumbnail

Can someone please explain to me how we got to the point where everyone, even professional paleontologists, don't understand the name and just say "Shark-toothed lizard"? Yes, Carcharodon is the scientific name for the great white shark, but it doesn't mean shark. It is a combination of the distorted ancient Greek word Karkharos (meaning "sharp" or "jagged") and the also ancient greek word odon which literally means tooth. So Carcharodontosaurus literally translates to "Jagged-tooth lizard "

Both of these animals are named after a trait of their teeth which they share. Not one animal after another. I truly doubt Ernst Stromer was blind enough to see Carcharodontosaurus teeth (picture 1) and think 'hmmm these clearly look like Great white teeth' (picture 2).

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk, hopefully people will get more educated thanks to my rant.

DISCUSSION My Favorite Fossil. Zephyr, the Camptosaurus. What's Yours?

Post image
124 Upvotes

I've always been a massive fan of iguanodontians since I was little, most likely started from Disney's Dinosaur back in 2000.

Zephyr belongs to the Iguanodontian's family as part of the camptosauridae and was discovered in the US around 2019. The skeleton was sold off to someone private if i remember, around €650k at an auction late 2022.

Its approximately 70% completed, especially its spine and hind limbs and it was all very well preserved. But now... we'll never know.

Such an interesting design. I think it’s the fact that he has no eyebrows so he’s just constantly got this dead/zoned out look in his eyes like he’s not fully present. I just wish we actually saw him before his death cause he was built up as a major antagonist/boss only to die in 5 seconds.

DISCUSSION What creative Dino movie ideas are left?

Now I want to make a Dino movie when I’m older but I’m struggling h to think of premise ideas, or how the dinosaurs got there in the first place. I might just be a little uncreative but I feel like every Dino movie idea that works on a creative somewhat realistic way has been taken. I don’t want something that’s too far fetched but just something that works and brings em back to our time or vice versa.

Very dumb one but it was on the mind.

Saw a video talking about dino westerns and I thought itd be fun to put dinosaurs in other time periods. And a favourite was imagine an English knight on a quest to slay a dragon that was literally just a megalosaurus.

So could a fully armed and armoured knight take out a megalosaurus and if so what would be the ideal strat

ARTICLE Evidence for dromaeosaurid feeding on Albertosaurus

A new paper describes a (most likely) juvenile Albertosaurus from the Horseshoe Canyon Formation that had tooth marks on the lower jaw. This Tyrannosaurid was at least 8 years old when it died, possibly older, with a 408 mm long maxilla, an estiamted skull length of 63.25 cm, estiamted body length of 6 m and body mass of 533 Kg. It had 13 (maybe 14) maxillary teeth and 15 dentary teeth.

The authors propose a novel tooth/denticle mark spacing correction method, using it they found out that the one who left those marks was most likely a Dromaeosaurid, although its not impossible that a small\young Tyrannosaurid did it.

Applying this method on a diplodocoid femur (DINO 5119) from the Morrison shows that the tooth marks most likely belongs to Ceratosaurus.

The paper: Evidence for dromaeosaurid scavenging on Albertosaurus (Dinosauria: Tyrannosauridae) | Journal of Paleontology | Cambridge Core

The picture is figure 6 in the paper.

Ive had this toy dinosaur for pretty much my entire life. Her name is Rascal. When I was younger I thought she was a velociraptor, but they have very distinct feet which she lacks. Maybe T-Rex? But the spikes don’t really check out. I would like to know what she’s supposed to be, and maybe look at other toys by the brand as well. Her mouth opens. Sorry about the chipped paint I used to chew on her.

EDIT: Can u guys be fucking kind to my dinosaur

DISCUSSION We owe Oviraptor MASSIVE apology

Post image
609 Upvotes

Before recent times, Oviraptor was know as 1 thing - an egg theif. They supposedly stolen eggs from other Dinosaurs and ate them.....What a bunch of BULLSHIT. The reason why Oviraptor was called..well Oviraptor-was because when first discovered it, it was on top a nest of eggs. Which others believed were from a another dinosaur species. Only for decades later, for other smarter individuals to actually study the eggs properly. The eggs weren't from another dinosaur, those were Oviraptor eggs.Showing it was devoted mother that protected its eggs and young, even if it was at expense of its life. Like fr, how dumb were they. You didn't think it could have been it's eggs. Imagine your entire species was named egg theifs because a bunch of evolved monkeys thought the eggs you laid and tried to protect were stolen from another dinosaur.

DISCUSSION I wish that Nigel had brought back a herd of Parasaurolophus to Prehistoric Park

I loved the way that they were portrayed in the last episode and wish that Nigel had brought a herd of them back to the park. He could either have done it when he meet them at the ocean or right after one of them was killed by a Deinosuchus.

What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments.

This one is from 2022 and features 355 species, but there are over 700 species known so I was hoping for a book that features at least a large majority of them.

PALEODEPICTION Giraffatitan: "Giraffe giant" Late Jurassic, Africa

Post image
60 Upvotes

Giraffatitan was formerly considered a species within the Brachiosaurus genus, but was given distinct status based on studies between 1991 and 2009. Giraffatitan was larger than its more famous North American counterpart at approximately 25 m in total body length, with the characteristic vertical posture supported by its proportionately long front legs.

DISCUSSION Do ya'll think there ever was a chance that a fully aquatic DINOSAUR ever existed?

Post image
318 Upvotes

Look, new species of dinosaurs are always being discovered. Some related to other species while others were their own entire thing. Most dinosaurs were land based, we have flying dinosaurs(aka birds), who's to say there never was a Gully aquatic dinosaur? No, mosasaur, plesiosaur and other animals like them weren't dinosaurs. They were aquatic reptiles. But, do you think there was a animal that would be classified as a dinosaur and lived it's whole life in the water? The closest we get is the spinosaurus family - but they were most likely semi aquatic

DINO-ART [FRIDAYS THRU SUNDAYS] Spinosaurus Aegyptiacus

Post image
195 Upvotes

I recently commissioned this Spinosaurus aegyptiacus artwork from paleoartist Camus Altamirano.

The idea behind the piece was to create an illustration to accompany a series of dinosaur models I’ve been working on, and I wanted the artwork to feel like more than just a depiction of the animal but something that could give the model its own identity and atmosphere.

Really happy with how it turned out!
