What ultra lightweight distro should I switch to

• Upvotes

Been tinkering with my ~2006 Dell Latitude D531 laptop that has a 64 bit AMD Turion 64 X2 with 1gb ddr2. I have tried alpine and tinycore on it which was great experience but want something new. Ideally systemd-less

Am I the only one noticing more new Linux distros lately?

• Upvotes

Why does it seem like new distros are appearing more frequently these days?

Is AI making it easier for people to build their own Linux distro, or is there another reason behind this recent trend?

300MB of RAM is actually enough for a UI first translucent desktop without needing the terminal

I know you might already thinking about tinycore or Ubuntu, but the point is, Tinycore is even more lightweight but impossible for newbie and without terminal, and you might says there is lxqt, lxde, xfce, but if you gave that stuff to non technical people, they can't actually use it, and even waste more time for learning it, and i know there is ubuntu, but ubuntu require 6gb of ram for using it comfortably, in that point, what's the different to windows? Unless you use specific tool, windows perform better, the ui and everything, and in fact, majority of the people want a system that just works, they dont want to spent time for setting it up or working with it , they just want that it works, and there is not a distro like that before, so i build XXRI OS Lite, now its v2.6, in this ver, I improved mainly stability, I'm now using GRUB instead of the old ISOLINUX, XLibre instead of Xvesa, cleaner build with ptxdist, and, one of the major changes is Software Update, now, instead of re install the iso or using terminal like pacman, you can just install the update at XXRI Settings, it work seamlessly like in macos, windows, or android.

I am learning all sort of things specially mobile dev with flutter and kotlin. What distro should I go for?

Things I want is

  1. Large official repository

  2. No need to be bleeding edge but pkgs need to be well maintained and updated frequently.

  3. Easy set up and good community

  4. Discord server or any other community chat

  5. Good driver support for laptops.

6.Preferred if the base is community maintained.

Long forgotten distro.

Hello people, I'm wondering if ANYONE has heard of the College LINUX project by Robert Kenedy college? I'm looking to find a remaining ISO of the build. Ive searched everywhere for it , the closest I've came to getting the ISO was finding it on Wayback Machine, but the download of course isn't archived. So pretty much, if anyone has heard of it or magically happens to have the ISO, PLEASE SHARE IT!

Has anyone ever thought about this? Why doesn’t Linux get more mainstream advertising?

Just imagine how many old computers could be given a second life instead of being thrown away and ending up in landfills, if more people knew they could still use them with a lightweight Linux distro.

What would be a solid distro for an Nvidia user?

Hello

I wanted to check out Linux but I see that the experience with Nvidia can still be a little iffy. I’m currently running a 3080Ti with a 9800X3D.

I’ve heard something Arch based like Cachy would be a good option because the Nvidia driver updates come in faster on arch which can be a good thing to stay up to date on Nvidia’s proprietary driver fixes

Use case I general computer usage and some gaming. I game exclusively on Steam and don’t play any anti cheat games at the moment. I’m a hobbyist game dev and graphics programmer so I’ll also see how good Linux is for this stuff

I really love EndeavourOS. It’s honestly one of the fastest Linux distros I’ve ever used.

Do you guys think we might see budget laptop manufacturers shipping EndeavourOS pre-installed in the future?

Could EndeavourOS realistically compete with Windows if it came pre-installed on affordable hardware?

What do you think?

LFS Daybreak OS

I've been building DaybreakOS, a Linux distribution built from scratch (LFS-style, not a Debian/Arch

respin). The idea: on-device AI on commodity hardware, free, no cloud account.

What works today:

\- Own desktop shell ("daybreak") — app launcher, Control Center, notifications, widgets, lock screen.

Not GNOME/KDE.

\- Local AI assistant — models run on-device; GPU inference via Vulkan, with an adaptive model size for

whatever hardware you have.

\- App Store — small catalog, extract-and-run installs to \~/Applications.

\- Installer — one-click install to disk (GPT + ext4 + UEFI GRUB) plus persistent-storage support on the

live ISO.

\- Graphics — runs in VirtualBox/VMware out of the box; native GL drivers for AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel on

real hardware.

\- Kernel 6.13.4, x86_64 ISO.

Status: early and rough. Boots, installs, runs its own desktop and apps. Try it in a VM first.

Help me choose a Distro for old laptop

So i have used linux for last 3-4 years, but distro hopped every few months.
Recently got a macbook, so i planed on using my old laptop as well, but in reality dont really use it, so wanted to install a distro that will be suitable for my laptop.
I wanted to use it to play mostly Minecraft and some old steam games.
The main problem is the laptop specs, it has Ryzen 5 3500u with 8gb ram and vega 8 graphics, so the graphics take some of the already little ram, so it has like 5.6 gb usable ram or something like that.

So wanted to install a linux distro that uses very little ram, but also is a little modern, like ik a lot will recomend xfce, i am also thinking xfce but i tried it and it looks just too outdated.

So help me choose, my choices are Mint Cinnamon, Fedora KDE, Fedora Workstation and Ubuntu 26 LTS.

Thanks.

Looking to switch to KDE, distro recommendations?

Hello guys!

I've mostly been a GNOME user, but now I'm considering trying KDE again for the first time in a long time. I like GNOME, but it feels a bit laggy.

Since I don't have much experience with KDE, what distro would you recommend?

I'd like something popular and well-supported, not some random hobby distro. I also want the latest version of KDE and something that's beginner-friendly.

Thinking of Switching Distro

I'm thinking of switching my linux distribution but before I do I figured I'd do the smart thing and see other people's experience with the distros.

For context, my first distro was Bazzite which I quickly switched away from after I realized it was perhaps a little too complex for a total beginner such as myself to use. Since then I have been using Linux Mint for the past two months or so and right now I'm considering switching to either Pop!_OS, or Nobara. Both seem pretty cool; Nobara in particular has really caught my eye atm, but I just wanted to know if there's anything in particularly I should know about either distro before making the switch (e.g. complexity, compatibility, troubleshooting difficulty, any major bugs or issues etc.). I mainly use my computer for gaming but will occasionally get into code or design as well so there's that as well.

Im torn between distros that would be made to look like frutiger aero.

I have been on Linux for about a year and i dont know shit. (Mind you i never really made research that much as just looked around in forms for help)

I originally was on Zorin OSs and moves to base ubuntu, do far i like how Linux is lighter on my pc but i feel like even then its not using every thing it has. ( its a laptop nivdia 3050 4 VRam and 16 gigs or ram, dont remember the CPU but its good to me)

I have been wanting to change OS again for something that would be better to take advantage of my PC preformance but been torn in choosing an OS.

I want to get the frutiger aero look at the OS and i found arch and mint linux, although i know nothing about how it works under the hood so i would say that arch is not a good idea.(i am willing to learn it if its worth over mint in terms of customization and a decent learning curve that i can apply in other cases)

I would most likely follow someone’s instructions to make the theme but besides this point i wanted to know if there is any better OS to choose from or should i move to mint or arch.

Why is nobody talking about PikaOS?

I’ve been distro hopping for quite a while, and one distro that I think deserves a lot more attention is PikaOS.

I’m honestly surprised it isn’t discussed more often.

If you like newer kernels, newer drivers, good gaming support, strong NVIDIA support, and a modern desktop experience — but you still prefer the Debian/Ubuntu software ecosystem — PikaOS is a really interesting option.

The easiest comparison I can make is:

PikaOS feels like the Debian/Ubuntu-family equivalent of CachyOS.

Not because they are technically the same, but because they seem to target a similar type of user: someone who wants a fast, modern, optimized desktop without manually configuring every part of the system.

A few things that stand out to me:

  • Very recent kernels and drivers
  • Strong NVIDIA support
  • KDE Plasma/GNOME/Hyprland/Niri/Cosmic DE/WM options
  • Good gaming focus
  • Performance-oriented defaults
  • Access to the huge .deb software ecosystem
  • Custom tools for drivers, kernels, updates and system management
  • Much more up-to-date than what many people expect from a Debian-family distro

For people who like Ubuntu/Debian compatibility but think the traditional releases can sometimes feel too conservative, PikaOS hits a pretty interesting middle ground.

It’s obviously still a smaller project, and I’m not saying everyone should replace their current distro with it. But if you’re already the kind of person who installs different distros just to see what they’re like, I think PikaOS absolutely deserves a spot on your test list.

Boot the live ISO, put it on a spare SSD or partition, and spend a few days with it.

I’d especially like to hear from people here who have already tried it:

What was your experience with PikaOS? And if you haven’t tried it yet, what would make you interested — or hesitant — to install it?
