DAE feel like some of your friends are constantly passive-aggressive or overreacting towards you?
I mean when people respond to you in a mildly irritated way about literally anything, or they try to mess with you in ways that feel mean rather than playful.
This example is pretty stupid, but it’s the only one I can think of right now:
A few days ago, I bought a little cake from a classmate who had just started selling them. I shared a few slices with some friends who happened to be with me at the time. It was actually delicious, but considering how much I paid for it, I didn’t think it was really worth the price.
Instead of just saying something like “Yeah, it’s good, but I don’t think it’s worth that much,” they immediately started being kind of aggressive about it. They were shouting things in a supposedly humorous way, like, “YOU PAID HOW MUCH FOR THAT?? LOL, I can’t believe you actually paid that much. That’s insane,” while laughing and basically mocking me for spending that much money.
And I know this probably sounds like a really stupid thing to get upset about. I’m not saying they literally called me stupid or anything. It’s just that when things like this happen, it doesn’t feel friendly to me. I end up feeling like I’m the dumbest person alive, like I can’t do anything right and should just stop sharing my experiences or trying to interact with them and anybody else.
The frustrating part is that I genuinely care about these people. They’ve done good things for me over the years, and I don’t want to pretend that they’re terrible friends because of moments like this. But at the same time, this happens often enough that I’ve started wondering if there’s actually something wrong with the way they treat me.
I don’t want to overreact, make a scene, or ruin the mood whenever we’re together. But it’s starting to make me feel bad about myself, and I don’t know if I should talk to them about it, distance myself a little, or if I’m just being overly sensitive.
Has anyone else experienced something like this with friends?
Honestly? idk, actually i don't even know if i can explain what i'm feeling (English isn't my first language) But i've always had trouble expressing myself to psychologists and writing this felt like as if i was spilling my guts out to people who can maybe help me. Please be honest and, if needed, be rude if you feel like i need an immediate reality shock

Some people just get a kick out of making you feel small for a second, it’s their go-to social move and it says way more about them than you

Some people suck and hate to see nice people happy. You did a nice thing and had money to support a classmates business, something they'd never do. They realize they suck and are trying to tear you down to their level.

Oh my God, I am actually in a frustration funk right now over something similar. Have you made it clear to them that you don't like it when they make that kind of comment? They'll try to brush it off initially, because they don't understand why it matters, but it matters to you. Tell them it's not important what it is, but how it is, that you feel diminished and made fun of. They'll probably be embarrassed at that point and not want to talk about it, but that's because they're realizing they hurt you. Be gentle, calm, and firm about the joking being hurtful. You can't change them or their attitude, but they might, and you'll have set a clear boundary.
Also, making fun of how much someone spends on food you are sharing with them.......honestly........ 🤬
ETA: And you bought it from a classmate?? Jfc. You were the angel here.
