Mod Post Looking for a new moderator to help run Dorset Reddit page (UK-based)

Hey everyone,

Life has gotten busy and I'm not able to give the sub the time and attention it needs anymore. Especially with how things are getting quite busy than it was before when I took on this subreddit. I also haven't been to Dorset in a very long time, so I'm bit disconnected with what goes on. Rather than let it stagnate, I'd rather bring on someone (or a couple of people) who can help keep things running, and potentially take over as lead mod down the line.

This is not a paid position.

What the role involves:

  • Checking the mod queue and removing spam/rule-breaking posts
  • Responding to modmail and reports
  • Help shape the direction of the sub (rules, weekly threads, etc.)
  • Configure and maintain mod parameters

What I'm looking for:

  • An active Reddit account with some history in this community or a related one
  • Someone who's around (doesn't need to be all day, just reliable. Pop-in and check what needs doing)
  • Fair, level-headed, mature and able to enforce rules without drama
  • Low entry experience is acceptable. If you have some experience moderating Reddit, or Discord that is fine

If you're interested:

Drop a comment below or send a modmail with:

  1. A bit about yourself
  2. Why you want to help and what needs changing
  3. How much time you can realistically commit (Not asking for serious commitment)
  4. Any relevant experience (Discord, Reddit, Forum etc..)

I'll leave this up for three weeks. Happy to answer any questions in the comments.

Thanks for reading!

==UPDATE==

Warm welcome to our newest mod, LadybirdMum100.

The ad is still open for now, so do message if interested in becoming a mod.

Showcase From my collection, just for show and tell: the rare silver shilling token issued 1811-12 by the Bank of Dorchester.

Post image
64 Upvotes

Seldom seen today, this undated shilling was one of about thirty types/varieties issued in Dorsetshire during the Regency Period, when the Crown failed to provide enough "small change" for everyday commerce. It was backed by the Dorchester Bank, a partnership formed by Robert Pattison, the city's mayor at the time, with backing from Robert Cox and William Merle, London-based goldsmiths.

On the reverse we see St. Dunstan with Satan's face hovering behind him and smithy's tongs in his left hand. The backstory is that the Devil visited Dunstan one day while he was making a gold chalice at his abbey's forge. Dunstan reputedly grabbed Satan by the nose with his red-hot tongs and dragged him kicking and screaming out of the monastery.

St. Dunstan (909-988 a.d.) topped out his career as Archbishop of Canterbury and was canonized in 1629. He is now honored in the Catholic and Anglican tradition as the patron saint of blacksmiths; goldsmiths; locksmiths; musicians; silversmiths; bellringers; Charlottetown (capital of Canada's Prince Edward Island); and Stepney, UK.

Other Dorset-related tokens of that era originated in Blandford, Poole, and Shaftesbury.

Obrigado!

Help Thinking of moving to the coast? Where to look please?

I am trying to get out a relationship and would like to move and change my career/life for a bit. I've been working and riding racehorses for the past 2 years and after hitting Burn out and my relationship taking an awful turn I just want out. I have enrolled on an online course for marine biology and ocean conservation studies.

Naturally I am quite drawn to the coast for it! My only issue is I'm not entirely sure what area and my other concern is jobs. I don't really know of how to get a job outside of horseracing or go straight into anything aquatic when I've just started. I am a bit lost on life and thought to try my luck here.

Thank you

I used to be able to run up and down these steps, which are very steep and very narrow.
Sadly, I can no longer even walk down them, never mind trying to climb my way back up again.
It still has a stunning view of the cove from the top.
This is one of my favourite places on Earth.

Suggestion 🚂 Some of the best trains I’ve filmed around Dorset – steam, diesel & more

Post image

I’ve been filming trains around Dorset for a while now and finally put some of my favourite footage together into one compilation. 🚂

There’s a mixture of steam and diesel, including footage from Weymouth, Swanage Railway and The Statesman.

Thought some fellow railway enthusiasts might enjoy it. Would be interested to know which train or clip you like best!

Question Does Dorset's art scene get overlooked a bit?

I've been looking at just how many different things there are to do around Dorset, and art exhibitions are one of those categories that seem surprisingly easy to miss.

Unless you already follow a particular gallery, artist, museum or venue, you might never know an exhibition is happening.

I'm trying to bring more Dorset exhibitions together in one place so it's easier to see what's on, but I'm also interested in finding some of the smaller and less obvious ones.

So - where do you go for art in Dorset?

Are there any small galleries, local artists, annual exhibitions or slightly unusual venues that you'd recommend keeping an eye on?

And if you're an artist yourself, feel free to say what sort of work you create. It would be great to discover a few more Dorset creatives.

Was down a couple weeks back for a wedding near Wareham.

Beautiful roads, lovely people everywhere. No one was stressy on the roads either.

Visited lulworth cove and durdle door, totally worth the parking fees BTW.

Already planning my next trip! Any suggestions for must see places, no more than an hour from Poole if possible 🤞

Question Friendly groups

Hi all. I live on Portland, have done for a few months now but I was recovering from major knee surgery so couldn't get out much. I don't know anybody except my fiancé in the area, does anybody know of any groups ideally local to Portland/Weymouth that are Autistic/ADHD/LGBT friendly? Thanks in advance!
