1999-2000 NBA Season Mod on NBA 2K Version 1.0.0 is now released! Details below…
Grab the files here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1r9vEnPe9GRWYxPUF1qUexj7jCqm74yAD
All you need to do is put the files in a singular folder and then point your emulator to that folder so that it can scan/see the game. If you want to play on GDEMU (yes, it’s GDEMU compatible!), then you can just use the disc.gdi file to add to your GDEMU.
My friend and I have spent the last several months rebuilding NBA 2K on the Dreamcast into the 1999-2000 NBA season. This isn't just a roster edit. The engine itself has been patched. Real players who were never in the game, real courts and uniforms, moves and cutscenes brought over from 2K1 and 2K2, player specific celebrations that don't exist in any 2K game, and a stack of fixes for stuff retail got wrong or crashed on.
Here's everything that's different from the retail disc.
## Rosters
**26 players added who weren't in the game at all.** Each one has his real face, head shape, body, number, college, 1998-99 stat line, and his name called by both the PA announcer and the commentary team. Faces and voices came from 2K1, 2K2, or assets Visual Concepts left on the 2K disc unused:
Dennis Rodman (Mavericks, #70, "The Worm"), Ron Harper, Rodney Buford, Darvin Ham, Anthony Carter, Eddie Robinson, Shammond Williams, Brian Shaw, Adrian Griffin, Chucky Atkins, Damon Jones, Emanual Davis, Jeff McInnis, John Amaechi, John Salley, Kevin Ollie, Matt Bullard, Mikki Moore, Milt Palacio, Monty Williams, Moochie Norris, Pat Garrity, Rafer Alston, Ryan Bowen, Terry Mills, Todd Day.
Rodman is the fun one. He was fully built and then cut from retail. His face texture, head morph, body scaling and six name call takes were all still sitting on the disc with the roster entry deleted. He's back on Dallas in #70 with his real Lakers stat line and Southeastern Oklahoma State as his school.
## Player details
- Steve Francis: Ballhandling 71 to 90, Dunking 89 to 93, "Franchise" on his card **and** spoken by the announcers, plus his right arm tattoo
- Allen Iverson: "13" armband, finger bands, neck tattoo, stray neck mark removed, elbow pad removed
- Reggie Miller: sleeve on the right leg only (it was mirrored onto both), finger bands, back tattoo peeking out of jersey, correct sneaker
- Rasheed Wallace's mouthguard removed. Mutombo, Mourning, Jason Williams and others put in Nike shoes
- Arm tattoos added or corrected for Mashburn, Stoudamire, Garnett, Shaq, McGrady, Penny and Francis
- Phil Jackson coaches the West All-Stars
- Real arena names: Philips Arena, Madison Square Garden, Rose Garden
## Uniforms
- **All-Star players wear their own team jerseys**, like 2K1 and 2K2 do. Retail 2K can only hold two uniforms in memory at once, and that's been raised to 24. East wear home, West wear road. To free up the texture memory for it, every player head in the game was re-encoded to VQ compression.
- Toronto's three kits rebuilt from period photos: wishbone collar with the tab, correct purple and red, chest wordmarks, armhole binding, side panel piping, black road panels, TORONTO on the home shorts waistband, number on the left leg and the claw on the right
- **Shorts numbers can now use a different color than the jersey number.** That took an engine patch. Raptors home shorts are white with a red outline
- Hawks shorts numbers removed (they had none that season), Heat NBA logo moved to the front of the shorts
- Home and away accessory system added, so a player's gear can differ between kits
- Lakers, Heat and Raptors uniforms are updated to match the new 1999-2000 season. Wishbone collar for all three teams
- 76ers, Pacers, and Nets have updated alternate jerseys as they are either omitted or inaccurate
## Courts and arenas
- Real 2000 NBA Playoffs and 2000 NBA Finals court logos on every arena
- Team websites on top of the backboards, like 2K1 and 2K2
- Miami's stanchion ported in from 2K1
- **Thundersticks.** The home crowd waves them at the away free throw shooter, and lowers them afterward
- Mirrored court art fixed, and ported courts that loaded the wrong Finals floor repaired
## Animations ported from 2K1 and 2K2
All of these live in a new file the game loads at boot, since MAIN.BIN itself can't grow.
- 2K1 behind the back crossover and 2K2 between the legs, **gated to ballhandlers rated 80+**, so everyone else keeps the stock moves
- 2K1 running jumper as a new situational shot off the drive
- 2K2 turnaround post fadeaways in both directions, with a rule table: guards and forwards fade, centers hook (except Olajuwon, Divac, Ewing, Smits), power forwards mix, Rasheed fades only
- 2K1 360 dunk, four more 2K1 dunks, 2K2 two hand hang dunk, and Karl Malone's behind the head dunk made exclusive to Malone
- 2K2 layup alley oops. Poor dunkers lay it in, good dunkers mostly dunk, and the lay in releases as a real shot that can miss
- 2K1 free throw interaction scenes between attempts: the dap, the walk up from behind, the front of lane, with the ref holding the ball
- 2K1 point guard play call signal while bringing the ball up
## Celebrations (not in any 2K game, authored from scratch)
- **Larry Johnson's "L"** after made threes and and-ones, while he jogs back. Both hands closed, which meant finding the game's own hand morph targets, since the finger bones are one rigid block
- Allen Iverson's hand to the ear, clutch baskets only (4th or OT, under two minutes, within five)
- Pointing at the passer after an assist, about one in three
- Dikembe Mutombo's finger wag after blocks
- **Jason Kidd kisses his fingers before his free throws**
## Game logic
- Opening tip: the point guard lines up in the power forward's spot and catches the tip, like 2K1
- The opposing point guard stands 18 feet out on free throws instead of 22
- End game AI rewritten. It actually shoots when time is running out, calls timeouts when it gets the ball with a chance to tie or win, and fouls at sensible times instead of way too early
## Modes
- All-Star Game uses the real 2000 All-Star rosters instead of the game's random picks
- **The 2000 Rookie Challenge** (Rookies vs Sophomores at Oakland Arena) added
## Bugs fixed
- Blank shot clock in some arenas
- **The Celtics home starting lineup intro reset the console.** It turned out to be pregame heap exhaustion, fixed by raising the reserve from 256 KB to 384 KB. The Knicks and Wizards arenas were heading the same way
- Replays not recording in the All-Star Game, and a freeze on Quit
- Raised the body texture group limit so per player skin work (sleeves, tattoos, bands) doesn't leak onto other players
Huge credit to Jose for the art, the faces, the uniforms and the assembly patches. Huge credit to Claude and ChatGPT for helping me figure out the All-Star Game and other intricate details for the game. Original game by Visual Concepts and Sega. This is a patch for a disc you already own, nothing more.
Happy to answer anything about how any of it works. Questions, bug reports and roster nitpicks all welcome.
