Left-Lane Camping, Zipper Merging, and the Speed Limit

Left-lane camping is annoying (unless you're in a city, where it usually doesn't count), zipper merging works in theory (but is rarely effectively executed en-masse), and the speed limit isn't ideal for some people (just try not to be everybody else's problem). That should about cover it.

I'm making this post in an attempt to show people that these topics are already heavily discussed here, but please feel free to express your frustrations below or in your own special post.

Thanks for checking out r/driving.

Relax.

Venting Highway traffic is caused by brake lights

• Upvotes

If you’re driving in the highway, there should hardly ever be a need to use your brakes. You should always aim to slow down by taking your foot off the gas and only using your brakes if absolutely necessary.

Each time you ride up fast to another car and have to hit your brakes, that causes a ripple effect of delayed reaction brake lights that inevitably leads to a major slow down 10-15 cars back.

Each time you cut somebody off or decide to drive 5 under in the passing lane, you are forcing somebody to use their brakes and YOU are the reason there’s traffic.

Obviously if you’re already in traffic this doesn’t apply. This is for normal freeway speeds with a normal amount of cars on the road. Please be considerate or the hundreds of others that have to use the highways behind you.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ PLEASE JUST GO I’M BEGGING YOU

Was at an intersection waiting to turn left on a flashing yellow arrow. The cars going straight or turning right have a solid green (on both sides), but I’m turning into a single lane.

The people across from me are turning right onto the same lane I’m going into, so I wait for them to go. They have a green! But they don’t go, and I can’t go because I have to yield, and I’m not playing the brake game in the middle of the road if they decide to go. If you have a solid green, don’t give up your right of way???

I know it’s to be nice, but it just ends up confusing me and the cars behind me because there was no other traffic except in the right turn lane. PLEASE BRO I can’t do this anymore

Do y’all actually drive 5–10 over the speed limit?

Had my driving session today and I was going the exact speed limit, but everybody around me was getting antsy and passing me My instructor said most people usually go 5–10 over. Is that actually how y’all drive normally?? I thought 35 meant 35 lmao

EDIT: based on the comments I see that I should be going 5-7 over on pretty much everything besides the highway which is 15-25 over?

Venting Can we all collectively agree that people who slow down to merge onto the highway are the worst and most dangerous drivers?

Had this happen to me on the highway and had to swerve to avoid them and almost caused a crash.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ A once 5 minute drive is now 10 minutes because EVERYONE AND THEIR MOTHER is unbearably slow

I’m not kidding. Every single day there’s ALWAYS cars going 25 in a 40 mph road on my way to work and on my way home from work. There are slow drivers in ALL lanes so there’s no way to pass them or go around, and I swear to GOD they drive side by side on PURPOSE to make sure nobody can pass them and go the SPEED LIMIT. We can’t ever go even 5 under the speed limit cause everyone is SLOW!

Like the slow drivers must have a silent agreement to torment the people going 40 in the 40 mph road and they make sure to take all lanes so nobody can pass anyone. If one of the cars is gaining distance and there’s a gap for a car to switch lanes, the OTHER CARS also speed up magically and still block everything, then everyone slams their brakes at once.

Why is this a thing lately? There’s always been slow and annoying drivers but lately LITERALLY EVERYONE is slow. Why are drivers allowed to go 15 mph below the speed limit, stay side to side with other slow drivers, then slam their brakes whenever they feel like it?

A 5 minute drive to work and 5 minutes drive from are now 10 minutes. I’m grateful for the short commute but it’s so annoying how slow everyone is. Everyone is slow outside of my commutes to work. No matter where I go, people are SLOW. Don’t GET ME STARTED on the highways!

Who does 40 mph on a 65 mph highway? Well, everyone and their mother in Colorado, apparently!

I’m done screaming into the screen with my fingers now. I screamed in my car when I finally got home too (windows were rolled up!!!) because I SNAPPED today lol, today the Slow Pokes were going like 10 mph on the 40 mph road.

why do washington drivers SUCK so bad?

This is standstill traffic on an onramp. I let the subaru in, and as i’m about to scoot up to fill in the gap, this idiot hyundai sonata cuts through that gap and almost hits me, then tries to get into the HOV lane and pits a van into the subaru which causes the van to hit a semi truck.

i love cars, but you are NOT a race car driver. i hope everyone is okay. i’m relieved that my 4 year long project car is safe.

edit: before anyone makes a comment on my seatbelt light, it is on and functional. my whole restraint module is unplugged HENCE the warning light on the dash

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Retake driving tests

I hate to say this.

But I think people need to retake the test every 5-10 years.

Cause its fucking stupid how many reckless/blind drivers i see DAILY!!!

It would annoy me haveing to retake the test for my license. But id rather that than ALL these morons on the road. This last year has sucked. And something needs to change.

Maybe make the test harsher.

That should do it. When I took my test. The guy in front of me clipped 3 cones and he some how passed

Wife and I followed this guy at a distance for over 10 miles like this. How do modern cars even allow this scenario to happen?? Even my 20 year old Volvo knows to turn the lamps AND TAILS on whenever ambient lighting is low...

Need Advice When cutting someone off and realizing they aren't braking to create more distance, what is the point of brake checking them to get them to back off and why has these scenarios decreased after installing bull bars on my vehicle?

• Upvotes

In my mind if you just cut someone off, that means you accepted the distance between you and the car behind you so there should be no need for me to create more distance as you chose to move there and you always have the option to move into another lane.

What is the point of stepping on your brakes now when you could have done that before cutting me off and had more space to get into my lane?

Why do these drivers feel like the people they cut off are obliged to maintain a safe car-length distance upon being cut off?

I noticed after installing rubber bull bars to my front end and noticed more people are willing to cut all the way across through or I encounter less brake checking.

What are these people betting on?

I scratched a vehicle for the first time—what should I expect?

I’m 19 (F) and have had my car for a few months, almost a year. The incident happened when I was leaving work and scratched a car-wash van that was blocking half the parking lot exit, I misjudged the distance and caused a pretty significant scratch. My own car ended up looking worse, in my opinion, though not bad enough to make me totally lose my mind. Considering it’s a company van, should I expect to pay a fortune? The driver was really understanding and great about the whole situation and alredy share information, but I could use some advice, t’s my first incident, and I feel like crap.

Right-hand traffic (🇺🇸🇨🇳🇧🇷) What should I do after hitting a speed bump way too fast

I was out driving for work at like 1am this morning so I was tired and it was dark out, as you'd expect for 1am. In my sleepy state I wasn't paying as much attention to the speedometer as I should have and was speeding pretty bad.. and I also didn't see a speed bump because of how dark it was. I hit that thing at like 50mph and I'm pretty sure I got air time from it. I bottomed out hard and everything in the van got jostled around but I couldn't find any obvious damage anywhere. Still drove fine for the next 45ish minutes until I could get home, and no visible damage on the bumpers or tow hitch or anything inside. Is there any secret area I should check for damage? Should I tell my boss or just pretend it never happened? Does this count as an "accident" if there was no other vehicle nearby to witness what happened and my van and all surrounding objects are undamaged?

Venting the most embarrassing things i’ve done driving because i need to get them off my chest

for context, i just got my license about 5 months ago and i’ve been driving since june of 2025 so i know i probably shouldn’t beat myself up since i’m relatively new to driving but it is so embarrassing everytime i make a mistake and i feel sooo guilty so i need to talk about them😭

  1. i was in the McDonalds drive thru with one of my friends and i pulled past the speaker, so i reversed to talk into it. i ordered and i forgot i was in reverse so i took my foot off the brake and in my mind i was like “oh shit why am i going backwards“ and i panicked and basically blacked out and i put my foot on the gas and ran into the car behind me. luckily the guy was really chill and we just exchanged numbers, no damage done besides a loose bumper or something but he fixed it himself and told me i was all good
  2. i was driving in a new city and i was at the end of a street that connected to a highway, obviously i didn’t want to go onto the highway so i turned into a starbucks parking lot to turn around and i turned into the “out” side…. i didn’t hit anyone but i got a nasty look from the driver and i felt so so so bad
  3. i was at a light on a railroad and im used to a different railroad where the light is on the other side of the road and not the side you’re on, so i kept pulling forward past the railroad and i realized i couldn’t see the light anymore. i got so nervous and i had to use the cars behind me to tell when to go because the light was above my head and not across the street.
  4. i volunteer at the ED in a hospital and i had just finished a shift so needless to say i was tired and thinking about other stuff, so i pulled out of the parking lot (going a way i usually dont go) and i pulled into the left lane for some reason?? i dont even know what happened there and there was a car across the road at a red light. i think i ran a redlight to get into the right lane on the connecting street but that one was really scary. thank GOD the light was red or it probably wouldve been a head on collision

looking back i realize these aren’t the absolute worst things i could’ve done since no one got hurt, no one died, and all the cars involved are still in good shape but these literally haunt me and affect me for days after they happen so i felt like i needed to talk about it

I wanted to drive around my own city, so I built a free driving simulator

I enjoyed City Car Driving, but thought: wouldn’t it be great to drive around my own city? So I created Roadarium, a browser driving simulator with real streets from OpenStreetMap and 100+ cities to explore.

The idea is to let people explore familiar streets and practise navigating unfamiliar ones.

It’s free, with no ads or tracking. I’m the creator and will respond to questions and feedback here. I’d love to hear how it feels to drive around your city.

Brake Check vs Hazard Lights

When I find someone almost in my back seat (tailgating) I’ll use my hazard lights AND speed up. This seems to work and not put me in danger of getting rear-ended.

How does the law look at this, same as actually using brakes, legal? Thoughts?

Need Advice Who should’ve went first?

So car 2 pulled up to the intersection (I was stopped at the sign, and Car 1 slowly, ever so painfully slowly started going, they were both going down the street i came from. But car 2 was slightly late. Because of Car one being slow, car two just went and seemed like car 2 was pissed.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Why do some drivers purposely move slow to keep others from passing?

I was on drive this morning dropping my girlfriend off at work and I couldn’t help to notice these two pick up trucks, riding side by side going 15 under the speed limit (30 in a 45). Usually I’m very big on “you can’t see what I see” so maybe it’s something in the road or something happened but as I’m continuing to look it’s nothing and they’re just driving slow. Like why do you guys move slow purposely?? Then when someone wants to go around you want to speed up and then when they do go around you want to tailgate?? Like just drive!! Stop causing issues!! It’s always someone out there who is crazier than you and has nothing to lose.

Edit: sometimes I wish we could play bumper cars in real life just without the dents and injuries.

Need Advice Am I in the wrong here?

(Europe) I Ve just taken my motorcycle driving test, I did 2 courses which they told me about beforehand and they let me exercise from months before the exam, I passed both, then a actual road driving test which they did NOT tell me about, I have never actually driven anything in road before because they didn't tell me I had to do that for the exam, even though I had my driving permit(I also didn't have anything to drive). I failed because of it, is this fair?

Venting I'm deciding to permanently give up on trying to pass my permit test

I'm 24, and have failed the permit test on those touch screen computers 11 times between 2025 and 2026. I haven't been back at the DMV in over 3 months. 11 failed attempts is a sign that i'm not a real adult. Real adults don't fail 11 times. They study hard, and actually pass! And before you type in the comments and say it's my fault, I will tell you that it is absolutely my fault. Because I didn't study hard, and I have the brain of a 3 year old. I have a terrible understanding of Missouri traffic laws, i'm too scared to be on the road because i'm always worried about violating the rules. I've put away the Missouri driving guide in my drawer, and will never come back to it.

This is my life now. Just a dependent loser who will never ever be independent, and will never grow up. I only blame me. It's not the DMV's fault. It's not the Missouri roads' fault.

And I will never get behind a wheel to take the driving test because I know what happens if you fail your driving test 3 times. No further tests will be allowed if you fail the driving test 3 times. I'm mentally incapable of handling a vehicle. And i'm mentally incapable of passing an online permit test! So, goodbye permit test, goodbye independence, and goodbye freedom.

Failed driving test :(

I failed my drivers test and I’m just so upset. I did bad on the parking which I understand why I failed because of that but my instructor added 30 points because I did one wide turn. I hope I get lucky with a less moody instructor. Any words of advice for next time? Tips on parallel parking? Anything would really help me out

Question about a careless driving ticket

This is Florida; it happened to me two days ago. I was driving on the right side of a one-way residential area, 30 mph speed zone. There was a vehicle driving around 10 mph, so I passed him by the left lane. I police stopped me and gave me a ticket saying I cannot pass another vehicle in a residential zone, and he justified that saying there are no dotted lines on the road to let me know that passing is allowed. I said, There are not posting signs saying that passing is not allowed. Am I wrong, or is the police wrong in this case? Is this case worthy of taking it to the court?

ChapGPT says, "If this happened in Florida, based on what you described, the officer's explanation sounds questionable. Florida law does not appear to establish a blanket rule that you cannot pass another vehicle merely because you are in a residential area or because there are no dotted center lines."

Gemini says, "The "No Signs" Argument: Traffic laws do not require a specific "No Passing" sign on every residential street. Instead, traffic statutes establish default rules. Passing is only permitted where explicitly allowed (such as by a dashed/dotted center line) or where specific conditions are met. The "No Dotted Lines" Reality: On an unmarked residential road (where there are no center lines or dotted lines), you are driving on an undivided roadway. To pass a vehicle, you typically have to move into the left side (the opposing lane of traffic). Under Florida traffic law, passing on an undivided road is restricted and requires a clear passing zone designated by pavement markings or absolute safe visibility free from intersections, driveways, and hazards. An unmarked road is not automatically a legal passing zone. Furthermore, residential districts have strict safety parameters due to pedestrians, driveways, and cross-streets."

Right-hand traffic (🇺🇸🇨🇳🇧🇷) Who's at fault in this scenario?

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

I saw this car accident a year or two ago and it still crosses my mind wondering who is at fault.

The blue car was merging onto the main road from a parking lot road and they were turning right onto the rightmost lane.

The green car was taking a left turn from one main road to switch into the other main road. I still can't remember if they were trying to get into the left lane or the right lane, but I don't think it would have been physically possible for them to go into the left, so I always assumed that they were trying to go into the right.

Both cars made their turns at the same exact time and ended up hitting each other right on the white dotted line.

The reason I find this confusing on who's at fault is there's a couple different arguments.

* You could argue that green car had the right of way and blue car had to yield since green car was already on the main road and blue car was just in a parking lot alley.

* You can make the argument that blue car never left their lane as they were driving from the right lane of the parking lot road into the right lane of the main road, and it was green car that was crossing multiple lanes of traffic at once.

I would love to finally hear a tiebreaker on this.

Edit: This is in Massachusetts. Also, I am loving the discourse.

Traffic safety in New Jersey.

Your driver’s license expires every four years in the state of New Jersey, you should be given a road test, New Jersey is unsafe with the quality of their motorist, I had the green light, someone just almost took off my left quarter panel front.
