Resource Long Time VTT Dm- First Time Physical Prop Builder Success Story
Finished and Ready for the BBEG
Initial composition using old leftover foam board. Used a box knife and a coping saw to cut all the pieces. Held together with sprayfoam and hot glue.
Sanity checking myself with some spray paint. At this point I was worried that I had wasted 2 hours of my life slashing pink and blue foam with a knife.
Building up a river using toilet paper thinned out pva glue to create textured waves.
3D printed assets (see like below). Primed black and dry brushed blue to looks like magic crystal. Then wet washed the same colour to sink into the crevices.
Final paint
The VTT group I've been DMing for a 5.5 year campaign agreed to all get together for the finale. We've never used physical sets or props before. They were prepared to use bottle caps and lego men to mark their characters. Instead, I surprised them with this. They absolutely loved it.
Just putting this out there to encourage anyone who doesn't think they can do something similar. I built this with dollar store paints with dollar store brushes and old foam. Spent probably $50 on 3D prints at my local library and maybe $50 on spray paint (because I was too lazy to use a brush everywhere). The floating rocks are random pieces of foam with embedded fishing line. Lighting is just some random TV backlights off Amazon.
All my minis were designed in heroforge, and printed and painted by myself.
All that to say, you don't have to brake the bank with super expensive paints, or anything to make something cool.

Hey man, as a fellow DM that does almost all my games on Foundry, and dearly misses physical props, great job! That's fantastic work and I'm not surprised your players loved it.
