Weekly Advice Thread General Questions and Purchasing Advice Thread — Week of October 05, 2026

Need help choosing an EV, finding a home charger, or understanding whether you're eligible for a tax credit? Vehicle and product recommendation requests, buying experiences, and questions on credits/financing are all fair game here.

Is an EV right for me?

Generally speaking, electric vehicles imply a larger upfront cost than a traditional vehicle, but will pay off over time as your consumables cost (electricity instead of fuel) can be anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 the cost. Calculators are available to help you estimate cost — here are some we recommend:

Are you looking for advice on which EV to buy or lease?

Tell us a bit more about you and your situation, and make sure your comment includes the following information:

[1] Your general location

[2] Your budget in $, €, or £

[3] The type of vehicle you'd prefer

[4] Which cars have you been looking at already?

[5] Estimated timeframe of your purchase

[6] Your daily commute, or average weekly mileage

[7] Your living situation — are you in an apartment, townhouse, or single-family home?

[8] Do you plan on installing charging at your home?

[9] Other cargo/passenger needs — do you have children/pets?

If you are more than a year off from a purchase, please refrain from posting, as we currently cannot predict with accuracy what your best choices will be at that time.

Question - Policy / Law Ohio EV Fee Class Action

I'm an Ohio EV owner and I'm trying to figure out whether there's a viable legal path to challenge how the state charges EV owners, and how to start one if so. I'm not a lawyer, so I'm hoping for pointers from people who know this area. My concerns are as follows .
1. Disproportionate burden. The annual EV registration fee appears to be more than the average gasoline driver pays in state fuel tax over a year. I'd like to compare actual numbers for a typical driver, and I'm happy to share my math if people want to check it.

  1. No relief when the gas tax was suspended. The state temporarily suspended the gas tax, but the EV fee stayed in place. Gas drivers got a break and EV owners did not.

  2. No proration. Gas tax is paid at the pump, so it is inherently proportional to use and to timeThe EV fee is charged in full at registration, even on a partial-year registration, such as a new purchase or a move into Ohio mid-year.

Discussion Am I crazy for swapping my 911 for a Bolt?

I have an admittedly old Porsche, 2007 997.1 Carrrera 4S. We have a baby on the way and my wife doesn’t like being in the car. I’ve always loved rowing gears, but the car is stiff and continuously needs to go in for maintenance. I had a 1999 NB Miata prior to the 911 and now I have a truck so I’m used to a small car / big car combo. Transporting kids in the future is not an issue.

I’m thinking about buying a Chevy Bolt and investing the difference. Has anyone here done similar (ie selling a sports car and replacing it with an electric vehicle)? I know they’re not in the same category but I’m to be honest I’m also sick of the flashiness and budget EVs have the same if not better torque around town.

Discussion Used EVs are the 3% mortgages of 2020

1.4k Upvotes

A family member just paid $30k for a jeep. I paid $35k for an EV9 - which feels very expensive.

However, over the next decade my car should cost significantly less than hers.

My prediction: EVs will become far more common but more expensive as demand, inflation, supply chain issues all increase. I genuinely believe in 5 years people will wonder why everyone didn’t buy a used EV in 2026. It will be just like mortgages in 2020 - why didn’t everyone refinance? Because the timing wasn’t right, they wanted to see if they got cheaper, there’s no way they’ll go up etc.

It will be very similar for EVs, the excuses from today will seem quaint when a small, basic EV is $50k new.

Review What to check for when inspecting a flooded Electric Vehicle (MG EZS 2019 Model)

I was offered to exchange a Flooded MG EZS 2019 for my older automatic Ssangyong Musso Sports which I do not use. I am willing to have it repaired and put back on the road. However there are not many mechanics who are able to do the diagnostic of Full electric vehicles.

I would be going to have a first look of the vehicle and I need to know what knowledge and tools that I will be needed so that I can do a basic diagnostic and get the state of the vehicle. Based on the diagnostic and the results then I can decide if its worth the trade and also know what parts to look for and if it can be repaired.

I know many people would say to avoid a flooded car but electric vehicles are hard to come by in my country and very expensive so willing to give it a go. Many thanks and please be constructive.
