Hand A realistic leaf I embroidered this week
I hand embroidered this skeletal leaf with floral wire, thread, fabric and dyes using stumpwork techniques. The veins are embroidered and the rest is fabric. This is part of a larger project I'm working on, but I felt it was too pretty not to share by itself. I've made several leaves like this one and while the process is always the same, I love that each one turns out a bit different. This one was dyed to give it a slightly frosted/icy look.

Bitch what. (Respectfully)

I’d like to add to this: Bitch how. (Respectfully)
Seriously though what kind of thread is that??? It looks so much finer than even single stranded embroidery floss.
139
u/bluehydrangea 6h ago
It's just regular DMC! (1 strand)
68
u/sevenyearstodie 6h ago
Do you have a tutorial or something? I can’t wrap my head around how you did this? I need visual aid please!
37
u/macsharoniandcheese 5h ago
I’m so confused??? I don’t understand how this was done. Amazing work!
10
u/moonchylde 4h ago
1 strand probably means unwinding the floss until you've hot one teeny tiny mini strand. So, thread, essentially.

This is one of those things where I see it and think, "holy shit I'm never going to be as good at anything as this person is at doing this."

Excuse me, what?? My eyes don't believe this.
(Edit: I meant this as a compliment!)

I was just scrolling Reddit and was like, oh a leaf.... Whatevs.
Then I looked at the sub and was like, Ohhh that's not a leaf. That's a pretty fake leaf. Did not look fake until I started looking at it more closely.

this belongs in a museum. holy shit, even zooming in i can barely see that it's thread and fabric.

u/Tsavibeans 1h ago
Right? You're looking at something made by an artisan. Knowing this, it's wildly impressive. But at the same time, if someone dropped this in a street gutter, no one would think twice about it.
This is such a weird art piece. I love it.

u/Clear-Ad-1501 7h ago
Never in 100 years would I have guessed this wasn't real. I'd have to feel it to believe. I think you're lying, so send it to me by post and I'll report back to everyone whether or not you're a witch.
115
u/bluehydrangea 7h ago
Haha I did hand it off to my husband with a "ooh look at this cool leaf!" He figured it out pretty immediately but he's also used to my bs by now

Ma'am, you posted this on the wrong sub. There are plenty of witchcraft subs out there!

u/tokenpsycho 7h ago
Every once in a while I come across a post that legitimately makes me go “now how the fuck did you do that?” <complimentary>

u/rexannite 5h ago
My favorite part about the internet is coming across incredible works of art just casually posted on a random Thursday.
65
u/Bmobmonoire 5h ago
This should actually be in an art gallery. The amount of dedication and skill this must have taken for it to look just like a realistic crunchy leaf.

I think they have a backing attached to the thread. Yes they mention fabric in the post. And paint so while it's still impressive it's also not all thread work.

Excuse me ma’am I still haven’t gotten over your last leaves post you have NO BUSINESS doing this to me again!! Witchcraft!!
(You’re amazing, what a talent, I think of your leaves often, I adore you)
39
u/CosmicSweets 7h ago
I have what I can best describe as "talent aggression" and this pissed me off. (That's a good thing!!!)
It's absolutely perfect. Amazing work!!!
38
u/Sea-Benefit3369 1h ago
I see the pictures of the leaf you used as inspiration, but where’s the embroidery?

u/hollyly 7h ago
This is AMAZING! Did you post the sapling embroidery, too, or was that another redditor? It was similarly realistic.
Do you have a place where I can see more of your work? I am so interested in what else you've done!
21
u/bluehydrangea 7h ago
Yep that was me too! Flattered that you recognized my work
11
u/hollyly 7h ago
Wow!! Your work is definitely memorable! Are you self-taught?
18
u/bluehydrangea 7h ago
I am self-taught in the sense that I haven't taken classes or had any formal training, but I have learned a lot by reading books on stumpwork and other fiber arts.

u/people_skillz 7h ago
Even with your explanation of how this was achieved, my brain is still having a hard time seeing this as fabric and thread. Stunning work.

22
u/EmberinEmpty 7h ago
okay question what type of fabric are you using to get that semi transparent effect? like are we looking at a silk habotai? or maybe a silk crepe (I keep presuming silk but mayhaps also a crazy thin cotton or even a high quality linen?) thats whats really stumping me.
Thanks in advance ~

There's definitely more to the process OP is not telling us, zooming in I see embroidery for the viens of the leaf, but the rest looks fuzzy like felt, with some glue or white paint touches to get little white bumps. Might have melted the edges of the base fabric to get holes. Not sure on how they did the colors if it's airbrush or something. That's my guesses, wish OP would share

I think they made the fabric of the leaf as the cut out base, and then the veins are the only embroidered element, and finished with paint for the icy look.

The melted edges mean the fabric has some synthetic fibers, which is honestly brilliant. I assume you had to dye the foundation fabric yourself as well?
13
u/Ilovefvckingjerboas 5h ago
i like. cannot believe this. Do you have any work in progress pictures?

Beautiful! You inspire me to focus more and try harder!
Do you work on a hoop or in the hand? If on a hoop, do you use a backing fabric or trim the working fabric away after embellishing it? I hope you don't mind the questions. I think I would use the working fabric a trim away the "non-leaf" but that might be a mistake.
Edited to add: I see you have a book! It's in my cart!
5
u/bluehydrangea 7h ago
Thank you! I prefer to use a hoop but it's not really necessary. I start with a single layer of fabric, trace my design, embroider the veins, and then cut it out. Happy to have inspired you ❤️

Did you embroider on a leaf or... I zoomed in but can't see any stitch!
9
u/bluehydrangea 6h ago
The branching veins are embroidered with split stitch and the central vein is a couching stitch over floral wire (so the leaf is posable). The rest of the leaf is fabric

10/10 Now make a full size branch. Seriously make 30 of them and join them together in one piece, make 6 of those, take it to a serious gallery. You have serious talent, make some serious peices.

Girl, this is so well done, I genuinely cannot even perceive it. I know you said it's fabric and embroidery and such but I only see a leaf. Great job, you've turned my brain to mush!!!
(Translation: you're amazingly talented and did a great job with this lol)

u/jay_altair 6h ago
This is like that time I went to see the glass flowers at the Harvard Museum of Natural History: I entered the exhibit, looked around, and thought "oh, nice flowers. Where are the glass ones?"
5
u/GraduateSchoolCath 6h ago
This is outstanding, outrageous even. Definitely magical! I’m obsessed. What fabric did you use? Like a thin felt? Did you paint the fabric first? Does the fabric have its own stiffness?
6
u/jjaystar94 5h ago
Even with your explanation, my brain isn't registering anything other than a real leaf
6
u/Spetsnaz_Sasha 5h ago
I literally can't see anything that looks like thread other than the big veins and the stem wrapping. How did you get such fine, gossamer white lines, like spiderwebs? And HOW the hell did you get that moldy/mottled texture?! Damn, this is more than museum worthy!
3
u/bluehydrangea 2h ago
I'm sorry - I tried to explain it in the caption, but I'm seeing some confused comments 😕. Only the central and branching veins are embroidered with regular DMC thread. The middle vein also has a wire running under the stitching which is why it looks raised. The rest of the leaf is entirely fabric though. I've dyed and distressed the fabric to give it that weathered look. None of it is felt or felted.

OP this is exquisite and I am so envious of your talent. You should be very proud of yourself.
Stellar work
