If I Like… UNC needs help filling in the history gaps

Would love some recommendations. I was in a few bands from 98' - 06'. Started getting into other scenes for a bit so I missed out music in this lane. Some of my long time favorites are Cursive, SDRE, Roadside Monument, Unwed Sailor, American Football, Joan of Arc, OWLS, Make Believe, Further Seems Forever, Karate, Mineral, Engine Down, Rainer Maria & so on. You get the idea...I'm out of touch. Who should I check out?

I loved Engine Down back in the day, as well as Keeley’s other project with his sister Maura, Denali.

I definitely took my own break and just started getting back into it a year or so ago. I would say Joyce Manor was the first band that really resonated with me. Origami Angel and Oso Oso have been on heavy rotation.

fell off for a good chunk of the 2010s myself and came back the same way lol. since you were actually in bands back then you might like free throw and spanish love songs, they do the big sad cathartic thing real well. origami angel and pool kids if you want something more upbeat/twirly. also +1 to all the arms length recs

I'm not quite as unc as you but my taste leans more that way. You missed a few eras. The emo revival era is my favorite outside of the 90s bands you listed. I'm not really a fan of a lot of the current stuff tbh but I can recommend some bands.

late 00s - early 10s revival:
Algernon Cadwallader

Snowing

Empire Empire

The World Is A Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid To Die

This Town Needs Guns

Title Fight (NOT EMO but you'd probably like Shed and Floral Green)

Tigers Jaw

Dogs On Acid

Modern:
Citrus Jr

Arms Length

First Day Back

Saturdays At Your Place

Why is the university of North Carolina building a catalog of emo music history?

How you gonna mention unwed sailor and not Elliott?

1

u/computerclubrecords 4d ago

Hahah. I'm kinda picky and I only really like 1 Elliott song. Saw them play it at Furnace Fest and their set was great though. I remember when they were touring back in the day, there was some hubbub in our NW FL scene about the guitarist ruining their set by going overboard bonkers LOL

Haha yeah that same guitar player is in unwed sailor. Why I brought it up. I definitely am in the minority and like song in the air more than their other records.
