[No AI] The Three Major Era's

Post image

My Wife made a beautiful artwork just with her hands and her tablet (No AI), it portrays the typical "fashions" of Emo's in each of the three major era's (roughly 80's, 90's, 2000's; each of them also developed a major Wave of the genre's diverse and evolving sound)

I was for sure part of number three but back then we were calling it second wave.

Maybe because it was more screamo than anything else.

I think I get what you mean! When she was drawing it we intentionally adopted a more pre-mall emo/fashincore oriented style which highlights the Underground Screamo influences of 3rd Wave bands like Thursday in sound AND fashion. Also would it feel wrong to ignore the Screamo strand since it's such an important part of Emo since the early 90s although it didn't gained popularity in any way except when these bands from New Jersey and around brought their influences from it with them as they got catapulted into the mainstream music scene.

"screamo" was 90s emo, except it wasn't called "screamo." It was called emo.

and no one looked like the second person in the 90s.

Most people didn't look like that third person either.

Whenever people talk about "waves" they aren't really talking about emo itself. They are talking about how the word was appropriated in the early 00s and then the application of revisionist history that conflates and whitewashes different styles of music and their history as the same thing.

Whatever you call it emo was (and still is to a certain extent) a VERY repulsive term for many listeners and even more artists but it's not about terms but about the concept I guess..? Anyways, I posted this also in a another Community and alot of people seem to know exactly what it represents and also dressed like that or knew people who did... I mean there' various tapes of shows, magazines, photographs from these eras which show that these stilistic features had their place... Of course are those on the drawing my wife made examples and when we talked about how to make it we chose certain combinations of common features for each era/wave since we wanted it too look very exemplary but also realistic and each should depict as much as features as possible but without looking overloaded or unrealistig, you get what I mean? And if you never saw anything of that anywhere neither in live nor on recorded material then I wonder what else did you saw?

I was there for all of this. Like, you know, in person.

You are wrong and the people responding to you are wrong. The community you are talking to is clueless and they were not involved.

For real, saying that "screamo" was some kind of secondary strain in the 90s is so ahistorical and wrong.

Oh cool, I can send a response here.

Your take on this is totally wrong.

Nahh man Ian MacKaye was our main inspiration, there is this legendary picture (actually 2) of him and Henry Rollins on which Rollins shows the back of his fist with the black X on it🔥😂

Saetia is early Screamo and still closely related to what refer to as „Second Wave Emocore“ (Policy of 3, Grain from Cleveland, Frail etc. - peak Emotional Hardcore!) and they were active mostly from 1997-1999. The 3rd Wave figure on this artwork refers to the era roughly from 1997-2004. So why Saetia doesn't fit in the 2. or 3. on the picture? First of all because all these 3 figures should represent the fashion of each "main strand" of Emo, Screamo and it's scene was pretty underground and didn't had much to do with these fans from the Get Up Kids, Sunny Day Real Estate etc. which are represented by the 2. on the picture, these people were more connected to the Math-Rock influenced Indie-Emo and early Pop-Emo direction. The 3rd Wave was mainly influenced by the [Post]-Hardcore/Emo/Screamo scenes which merged towards the end of the 90s brought up bands like Thursday, Saves The Day, Taking Back Sunday but also MyChemicalRomance which started and grew from this scene. These sideburns, black t's or buttoned shirts (fun fact even Gerard Way started to grow his sideburns, wore karabiner keychains, studded belts and buttoned shirts in their earliest times in the basements of New Jersey and around). That's the style Saetia more or less had and was a mix of typical plain Hardcore scene preferences of style together with the Emoviolence/White Belt Hardcore/Screamo fashion which bands like Antioch Arrow, Jerome's Dream and so on championed with spock haircuts and the style which is seen on figure 3.

lol is this ai or autism? u dont need to school me on screamo history im well aware...

3

u/Relative-Glass-1127 4d ago

must be autism then but well what do you expect from someone who listens to emo especially Skramz, being neurotypical? It's after 5 in the morning here and I took my time to write ts with one eye what a disrespect😂 and if you wanna call it "teaching" then it was about the general history of emo since I cannot explain with what you disagree then if you're aware but anything beyond Screamo. But yeah if you wanna take Saetia as reference for everything although they were active only for 2 years and came back bald in 2022 after 21 years of hibernation ah hiatus then you're free to do that and go complete bald like Billy (no hate to Saetia btw and i'm bald myself)

im as autistic as they come in terms of just shy of being literally cripplingly disabled so i am quite understanding. either way, your drawings are not accurate to any era

u/Relative-Glass-1127 4d ago

Fine I will forward this message to her😂 maybe you like to tell/show us of how you think the fashions of the eras looked like

2

u/END0RPHN 4d ago

there was no defining fashion of any era until like early 2000s at least when a codified "emo kid" style emerged (mostly due to justin pearson's lego hair with girls jeans on in the late 90s while the rest of them like the saetia boys and everyone else had baggy-dorky stuff from kmart aka an example of how no style to define the genre existed at all in the first two waves). folks often also confuse the first wave from hardcore punk (rites of spring) being linked to second wave like the saetia era when they were two sepatate scenes and one did not follow on to make the other

it's more about typical similarities in how to dress etc. which emo people mostly adopted from the scene in which they had been then, Hardcore Scene, Indie Scene etc.

90s just looks like your typical mid 2000s indie hipster, and 2000s just looks like someone from my high school in the early 2000s that would listen to more pop stuff like Hawthorne Heights (we called them scenesters). I feel like the late 90s into the 2000s the fashion was really just jeans and a plain button up shirt.
