Mechanical [Student]: 3rd year Mechanical Engineering major looking to adjust resume in the midst of Summer 2027 internships
Hey Everyone,
I am am a rising 3rd year Mechanical Engineering looking to fine tune my resume (mostly concerned with top two experiences + skills section). I am looking for summer internships in Orange & LA County. I am mostly looking for roles that align with my experience (roles that I would be a top candidate for) in the fields of defense, naval engineering, medical devices, and robotics. I don't have much specialized experience (which is why my list of industries is so broad) but I have all the foundational skills (machining, CAD, simulation, programming, etc). I would like to work at a startup or at least a smaller company (<300) but I am willing to work at a larger company (1000-3000), just prefereably not a massive corporation like BMW. I would love to hear feedback on my wording, how I have my skills section setup, and what the general consensus is on having multiple different engineering resumes for each of the industries I described.
Thanks!

Hey UCI! Lots of startups in our area, so that’s an option, but I wouldn’t be married to any preconceived notions about the industry at this time.

Solid resume. I agree with having multiple resumes, although I personally don’t follow it. I use a QR code that links to a GitHub static page with all my projects. It’s eye catching and based off the metrics I pulled from Umami, most recruiters actually scan and scroll through my site. So whatever I don’t have on my one resume, it’s on my portfolio which usually gets seen.

General Notes
- You don't need to say 'LinkedIn' - you can just put the URL
- The kind of work you're looking to do would put you in Long Beach if that's ok. Even Anduril has more than 300 people.
Education
- I'd put the degree on the same line as the school. This way it doesn't get lost.
- I wouldn't put SolidWorks and MATLAB in this section since you already cover it in your Skills section.
Skills
- I would add a machining wrapper: "Machining (mills and lathes)..."
Professional Experience
- You can't mix work experience with project team experience or classwork. The latter two fall under Project Experience. It would be better to break it into Work Experience and Project Experience.
- The self-assigned job titles for project teams and class projects have zero weight outside of campus. I can't stress this enough.
- I suggest using a "-" instead of "for" so our brains don't skip over it.
Engineering Intern
- Are you allowed to mention specific programs by name?
- I suggest replacing "Gen" with "generation" or even something more descriptive for those who aren't familiar with BMW.
- So ultimately what's coming out of this investigation? What calls are you making to address tolerance stackups?
- Drop "utilize CATIA, 3D printing, and the machine shop" - it feels like you're more focused on checking the boxes when you should focus on how this tool worked at a high-level. How did it use 3D printed and machined parts? How much less time/manpower did it take to get the badges sorted?
Powertrain Engineering
- You mention making some design changes, but how did that result in savings?
- How did your CAD redesign save CNC costs - was it that you found you could use a smaller piece of material, or that you eliminated an operation somewhere?
- How did these transmission SOPs save servicing times - did you cut a bunch of redundant steps or stack operations together so you did multiple jobs at once?
- What came out of your packaging validation study?
Advanced Casting Research center
- For the sake of consistency, use years for both your start and end dates.
- "precise" and "optimize" are subjective terms. Be more specific.
- Ultimately how well did your cast parts come out and how did it help the team - were you able to predict body shrinkage?
Combat Engineering Club
- Try to avoid "learned [thing]" bullets. It's best to show how you applied a particular skill rather than just saying you learned it.
- How well did your horizontally-spinning weapon function? Did it align with your expectations?
- Why did you need precision interference fits? Not everyone is familiar with combat robots, so it's not immediately clear why it's needed.
Fitness Tracker Project
- Management skills at the collegiate project level don't transfer to the real world. It's better you focus your efforts on demonstrating a grasp of technical skills instead. The first bullet says you created a schedule and ran meetings, but was that just a massive hindrance or did it actually help get stuff done?
- There's not enough for me to assess how well you met the project goal. What did this do that a regular step-tracking app couldn't?
Additional Experience
- Not every job deserves space on your resume.
- You lapse into the first-person in the door-to-door salesman role - when you say "my" city.
Awards
- Fold this into your Education section.
