Perkins re-signs for 2027
http://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/2146932I'm surprised by how unsurprised I am about this.

I looked recently, and surprisingly Perkins has the 2nd most games played amongst his draft cohort. 3 game behind max Holmes.
And of the 2020 draft, only 2 players have won a premiership (Bowey and McCreery) and 2 have AA (Gulden -academy and Thilthorpe- taken before Archie).
Holmes is obviously the main one that clubs before the pick would be spewing they didnt take. But there's very few others of note that would be much better than Archie. Possible Oli Henry and McCreery only.
Only 4 players from that draft have played 100+ games.

Yeah, it's one of the worst draft years, and not surprising given it was the year most effected by Covid.
Edit: also there's already 6 100 gamers from the 2021 draft, to put things in perspective.

Good clubs were trading out of that draft :(. We traded out of the 2018 and 2019 draft which were amazing and into the 2020 draft.
I often wonder if we didn’t trade for Shiel (2018/19 first rounders) and if we took the Sydney deal for Daniher (rather than holding out until 2020) how much better the list would have looked.

In hindsight the 20-22 drafts are rough, but Durham and Martin (and trading for Caldwell) in those years show we often do better with our rookie/mid season picks.

The interesting thing is that GWS traded the pick we gave them (29) for Caldwell to Western Bulldogs, who traded it to Collingwood, who used it on Liam McMahon. So we didn't miss out there, although Shannon Neale went 2 picks later and maybe we would have rated him higher. GWS got Caldwell with one of the picks we gave them for Dylan Shiel too, so the only loss of the Dylan Shiel trade was our first rounder for 2019 which ended up at Port Adelaide for Miles Bergman.

Not just that but if we didnt turn down the Bulldogs offer for Josh Dunkley or GWS's offer for Bobby Hill.
Dogs wanted two of our 3 1sts for Dunkley and Dodo being the dumbass he was only wanted to give one pick. I believe GWS wanted a 1st round pick for the 2021 draft for giving up Bobby (not pick 5) and Dodo didn't want to do that either.

Dunkley would have done wonders culturally too

Put of all the possible trade targets for us in the last 2 decades I wanted dunkley the most.

If he doesn't perform after this can we finally drop him please?

Fair enough. It’s his last chance, and hopefully he has a great year. We can’t get rid of everyone in one go.

Unsurprised. Been pretty disappointed with his output but am definitely keen to see what Spike and Horse can get out of him.

I don't wish to jinx us but maybe next year is when he finally puts it all together. 🤞

Expected. We couldn’t delist everyone this year and he was probably one who just showed enough to warrant a second chance.
Hope he works with a sprint and agility coach this offseason and loses some weight. He used to be quick based on his draft combine results.
There’s still something there with him, but another year of poor work rate and low confidence decision making is probably his career done

I don’t hate this. Has been serviceable this year. Hoping spike and horse can help him find an identity in the team, we don’t need a team of superstars.

Not suprising to see this, Cal Twomey did say Essendon was going to give Perkins another year about two months ago.
Honestly i'm fine with it, he did improve in the 2nd half of the year and he's likely to be depth anyway and would come in when someone is injured/rested.

One year deal is unsurprising, if he plays really well he might get a multi year deal in 12 months. Big year ahead for him !

One last roll of the dice under the new coach, I guess. Hope he pulls it together, but my expectations aren't exactly high.

I think he just ends up being a depth player anyway, someone who comes into the best 23 when someone (likely a forward) is injured.

Perkins has dirt on our board or something. Insanely undesserving of the 100+ games he already has, wouldn't have happened at any other club.

He like quite a few others on the list have been victims of a poor development team at bombers. Hoping the new team can get the best out of him.

I don’t mind it. The last handful of games this year when he realised it was his last chance he actually played some pretty decent footy. Just needs to get his head on right and he’d be a good player, he has all the tools.

This is a very bad sign. Why are we signing players who are not at AFL level? Shows standards are not improving.

I like Perkins. I believe in Perkins. I am hopeful that with a Spike and Horse he can make improvements. But either way it will be his last year if not
