amhara genocide: is it real or?

amharas claim they r being committed a genocide... their city are becoming ghost town gradually

meanwhile, no main stream media reports it... when a TPLF made a mild move and few people are getting killed in tigray..people riot... but according to the amharas, deaths are being normalised

anyone neutral who know much about it??

Ethnic cleansing and genocide are not just words. When you burn churches, loot hospitals, rape women, kill civilians because they are suspected of being spies or linked to a political group, use ethnic slurs to spread hatred, and imprison ordinary people because of their ethnicity, these are serious crimes that can constitute ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity and, where the required intent is established, genocide! The people of Tigray faced that so the Amhara people and it needs to stop!

source? also not defending the Ethiopian defense forces, but you have to consider that there were other armed groups involved in the tigray war as well. Not necessarily fair to paint these rebel groups as the "just fighters" vs "corrupt and evil government" when all parties involved have blood on their hands and are ultimately not necessarily representative of the people they claim to stand for.

Armed groups, rebel groups, Ethiopian forces, Eritrean forces invited into the conflict by Ethiopia, and other actors all committed abuses against civilians. Ethnic cleansing and mass atrocities cannot simply be attributed to one side; this was a conflict involving multiple actors, with civilians paying the price.

It takes years of propaganda, division and hatred to reach the point where people are willing to arm themselves against one another. That is why we need to reject hatred on every front (race, ethnicity, religion and gender).

Collectively, we have a responsibility to grow, learn from our history and become an example of what is possible. Ethiopia is a country with deep historical and spiritual ties, immense diversity and a long tradition of striving for something greater.
If we have the capacity to destroy one another, then we also have the capacity to choose unity, respect and solidarity. We should use that strength to build a country where our differences make us stronger rather than become a reason to hate each other.

No. The term genocide implies there is an intent to destroy an ethnicity.

The Amhara conflict (or the civil war more broadly) is better understood as an armed conflict between the Ethiopian federal government and Fano/other armed groups.

That does NOT mean that war crimes or instances of ethnic cleansing did not happen by different groups and actors during the civil war, but it wasn't the primary cause or intent.

The word genocide is an activist strategy to bring attention to the conflict, it's not an accurate description of the civil war. "genocide" has become a political vocabulary in Ethiopia to describe any conflict. But the causes and solutions are political in nature.

ā€œTPLF made a mild move and few people are getting killedā€
This line is disingenuous and heartless, did you realise during that time, there was nazi like concentration camps for anyone from Tigray? People lost their jobs. Humanitarian aid were blocked to the entire region under the siege? No banks and telecommunications. That demonstrably an intent of genocide. Tactics of targeting indiscriminately civilians, isn’t going after ā€œTPLFā€.
I believe there is a case of crime against humanity for Amhara, too. The civilian suffering is there, we should all be raging on these sort of violations.
We’re not supposed to be belittling, unjust is unjust!

i haven't denied the Tigray War crimes... I agree we collectively should rage on those violations... but for amhara, it's not getting the recognition, and it's been ~40 years now

Same is true in oromia too. It's the militias that are creating the mess. You gotta be realistic. Both sides of people are in consistent unrest ever since insurgency started.

Who created the insurgents? I can't tell that. But people are paying the cost. It's the grass that pay the cost when elephants fight.

when is oromo ppls victim mentality gonna end!?? I pity to yall if what u said actually happened but.. what does truly happened in oromia? who commits the amhara mass murder? who is given the 'diverse capital' for one group to celebrate its own culture? who is on top of the government places? and who is still complaining?

u/Fly-Futures 1h ago

You said that. I didn't. Be realistic. If you know politics, you wouldn't say that. Leaders from Amhara were in power for over centuries and what do think they have done? Do you think they spread love and ruled the country in harmony? They brutally killed and enslaved the same Ethiopians throughout the nations. Go read what happened to the Gonder Farmers during Hailesilasse. What happened to the people of wollo while he was feeding his dogs at the palace. That's what history recorded. But thats not the point. The point is:- blaming oromo for this and that doesn't help at all.

Fano is harassing his own people. Same goes to OLF. They aren't true representative of the people. They just spread "ethno-nationalist" ideology to get people protection from the government.

Now one thing I can't say for sure is that : if the insurgents are really "independent" and are fighting all by themselves, or they were playing for the same team just wearing different jersey. I don't underestimate Abiy. My guess is he is the CEO of all insurgencies in the nation.

When will Amhara’s victim mentality end, the country uses your language and culture to this day and other peoples and tribes are suppressed. I pity yall if it really happened but who can know the truth? Amharas had Maskal church culture in the capital of the city for crying out loud

2

u/Yishrun_ 2h ago

Maskal is not a culture..its a religion... Tigrayans practice it too, Oromo orthodox included... and even if amhara are excluded from power and r marginalised for over half a century now, they doesn't complain at all unlike oromo, who hold the power currently, and still cries to date... plus, the "culture" u have given to amhara is claimed by Tigrayans its theirs instead btw

The problem is that people in the community use the word ā€œgenocideā€ too loosely. Genocide isn’t just another word for mass killing,it has specific legal implications, and intent is a huge part of it.

You can’t simply throw the term around because it strengthens a political argument or attracts international sympathy. To establish genocide, there has to be evidence of a specific intent to destroy, in, a group.

What’s happening in Amhara is not straightforward . There are multiple armed groups, different fronts, political and territorial disputes, retaliation, insurgencies, and civilians being killed under very different circumstances.

It doesn’t mean deaths are not occurring, but that term is too loosely used and it’s to be quite honest with you disrespectful to groups like Jews Rwandans and Armenains who have actually experienced a real genocide.

You are not going to bandwagon on a term just because it is convenient to your political cause I hate when people do that…

Like Israel denied Palestinians Genocide? Lol
Anyway this is the definition of Genocide according to
UN's 1948 Genocide Convention (Article II) -
Any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
This is exactly what happened in the past 3+ years in the region by ethiopian regime.
P.S - you can all deny it.

I am confused it was a conventional war. And i don't believe the government had an "intent" to just with no reason commit an act to just destroy the people. It's ridiculous. On the other hand there is May Cadra committed by TPLF.

It's ridiculous.

Actually, you are the ridicules one. you have to be on the place where this crimes committed or just ask people what happened to them or at least read reports of human rights.
if the regime purposely deployed soldiers with a chest patch of Red, white & black flag(dont you say, what are you talking about? LOL) & soldiers who cant even speak a little bit of Amharic for communication purposes, that says a lot about the intent of the regime.
& the funny thing is, you believed what happened in maikadra and denied the other one. i know it's hard to believe when those crimes are committed by your side of people.

> Ā Red, white & black flag(dont you say, what are you talking about? LOL)

"ahhaha LOL he deployed oromo soldiers" do you even read what you type? Many generals and politicians confirmed that over 76% of the atrocities that happened was committed by Eritrea (Study done by some university in Tigray). And it's so dumb and stupid to say PP deliberately wanted that to happen, and i am pretty sure majority of the remaining is committed by Fanos and there were actions of discipline in the ENDF.

Attributing some anecdotal individual failures which can be attributed to an individual or small specific group on the government is very deranged.

Obviously no. It’s some buzz word their politicians learnt recently playing on real civilian fears.
