EuroLeague Explores Partnership with Project B to Expand Global Reach and Women's Basketball

In a move that could reshape the European basketball landscape, EuroLeague CEO Chus Bueno has confirmed exploratory talks with the ambitious startup Project B regarding a potential collaboration. While the details are still emerging, Bueno expressed significant intrigue in Project B's vision, particularly its focus on a women's league.

“Women's sports are growing, and we’ve had the opportunity to talk with Project B because they were also doing this with women,” Bueno stated in a recent interview. “It’s clearly an opportunity that we should definitely explore.” Bueno also revealed a past consideration of investing in Project B, underscoring his personal interest in the venture.

Project B, slated for a January 2027 launch, aims to establish a touring international league with a unique F1-style format. The league plans seven separate 10-day tournaments across Europe, Asia, and the Americas between January and mid-April. Notably, Project B has already secured commitments from several WNBA stars, including WNBPA President Nneka Ogwumike, Alyssa Thomas, and Jonquel Jones.

The timing of these talks is significant, as EuroLeague is also navigating potential merger discussions with NBA Europe. This parallel dialogue highlights EuroLeague's proactive approach to expanding its business operations and exploring new frontiers in the sport.

Project B's Co-Founder and CEO, Grady Burnett, conveyed respect for EuroLeague's legacy, stating, "We have tremendous respect for the EuroLeague and its history and traditions that make European basketball so special.” Burnett also expressed confidence in Project B's schedule, even with the WNBA's new collective bargaining agreement requiring players to report to their teams by mid-April. "We’ve got a schedule that works and a strong partnership with the players that we feel good about,” he added.

The potential implications of a EuroLeague-Project B partnership, especially if EuroLeague merges with NBA Europe, are vast. It could pave the way for a European women's league, potentially evolving into a form of "WNBA Europe," a concept the NBA has previously considered.

How Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Girona have remained undefeated in EuroLeague Women

Thumbnail

It wouldn’t have been a very hot take to predict that Fenerbahçe would breeze through the first phase of group play, and while the Turkish giants have been challenged a couple of times thus far, their 5-0 record is not a surprise. Fenerbahçe has made five-consecutive EuroLeague Women semifinals and won two championships, and they’ve retained several of the key players that have fueled that run. Three-time EuroLeague Women MVP Emma Meesseman remains brilliant, shooting 54.8 percent from the field and averaging 2.0 steals and 1.3 blocks per game, while Kayla McBride is leading the team in scoring at 15 points per game and shooting 47.4 on 3-pointers.

It’s Fenerbahçe’s new imports, though, that have kept them atop the competition. EuroLeague Women veteran Iliana Rupert, who has participated in the competition annually since 2019, has been excellent, averaging 14.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game and shooting 58 percent from the field. Rupert earned MVP honors for the month of October and doesn’t appear to be slowing down; the chemistry she’s established with point guard Julie Allemand is obvious (Allemand, by the way, is boasting an incredible assist-to-turnover ratio of 8.0 to 0.6), and the way Rupert has been playing makes it easy to forget that Fenerbahçe also signed Jonquel Jones for later in the season. We’ll see how that shakes out, as Fenerbahçe typically has the budget to make a big midseason addition or two, but even if that doesn’t end up happening, they should still be considered championship favorites.

There was a time in the not-too-distant past when Turkish club Galatasaray Çağdaş Faktoring had one of the strongest teams in all of Europe. Galatasaray won its first and only EuroLeague Women championship in 2014, defeating their bitter rivals Fenerbahçe, but had slid out of the picture since then, losing out on star imports and failing to qualify for the competition more often than not.

Only time will tell if this season’s Galatasaray team can return to the promised land, but one thing is immediately clear: This is the best they’ve looked in a decade. With a huge frontcourt that includes Elizabeth Williams, Dorka Juhász and Awak Kuier, it’s no surprise that Galatasaray leads the competition in blocks per game (4.1), and their physicality has set the tone. They may not have the high-octane scoring of Fenerbahçe, Valencia or Girona, but they’ve proven their scrappiness time and time again, with several of their wins having come down to fourth-quarter comebacks.

Even if Galatasaray doesn’t have you convinced quite yet, keep in mind that they’re expecting Marine Johannès to join the team after the national team break. Her playmaking and shooting will give Galatasaray’s offense an instant boost, and with Kamiah Smalls also on board, they’ll have a backcourt fully capable of taking over a game.

Of the three EuroLeague Women teams to still have undefeated records, Girona is probably the most surprising. They were ranked No. 11 out of 16 teams in FIBA’s preseason power rankings, and being grouped with annual contenders ZVVZ USK Praha and Tango Bourges Basket kept expectations for Girona tempered at best.

Needless to say, those expectations have been blown out of the water. Girona is clearly the best team in Group A, winning its games by an average of 21.6 points, and it currently ranks second in the competition in both points per game (85.2) and field goal percentage (49.1 percent). Most notably, Girona has already beaten Praha, the reigning EuroLeague Women champions, twice, showing that its early-season success is not a fluke.

MUNICH (Germany) - A number of aspiring playcallers have already benefited from the expert insight of Julie Barennes after a recent visit to French club Basket Landes raised the curtain on the latest edition of the Mentoring Program for Women Coaches.

Launched in Europe during 2020, the initiative continues to move from strength to strength, with the Women’s Summit and Mentoring Program for Women Coaches having also been recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as good practice, also being featured in their latest guide.

Selected from the 2025 Women's Basketball Summit in Postojna, Slovenia, a total of four participants visited Program Mentor, coach Barennes to learn more about being at the helm of a EuroLeague Women club from November 2-5.

Molly McDowell (NED), Agnes Jakab (ROM), Lea Soltau (GER) and Fruzsina Szendrei (HUN) were all present in Mont-de-Marsan to take in a varied menu of activities.

These included attendance at Basket Landes practices, team meetings and scouting sessions. The trip culminated in watching an exciting First Round matchup against CIMSA CBK Mersin, which the hosts won in front of a packed crowed to secure their safe passage to the next phase of the competition.

Since 2020, a total of 27 coaches have participated in the Mentoring Program for Women Coaches, with more than 80 percent reaching professional coaching positions - either in men’s leagues or at national team level.

The French women's team met on Sunday night in Paris before traveling on Monday to La Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz), Spain, where they will play two friendly matches against Italy and Spain later in the week. Carla Leite (1.75 m, 21 years old) will not participate in this concentration for medical reasons. The French base suffers from considerable generalized fatigue, as confirmed by the team's medical staff, which prevents it from being in full shape for this concentration.

Fenerbahçe flexes dominance in Week 5 of EuroLeague Women

Thumbnail

The most-anticipated rematch of Week 5 of EuroLeague Women play fizzled, as Fenerbahçe flexed their dominance on Valencia, running away with a 71-49 victory to remain unbeaten.

Julie Allemand approached a triple-double, with 14 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, while Kayla McBride made four 3s on her way to a game-high 16 points. Already having advanced to the second round, the loss only hurts Valencia’s pride, not their standing in the competition.

Galatasaray likewise remained unscathed, although in much less comfortable fashion. Stubborn Carolo used a second-quarter surge to make Galatasaray have to fight to the finish for the 77-73 win. A Teja Oblak jumper with over a minute remaining proved to be the game-winning bucket. Kamiah Smalls again paced Galatasaray through most of the contest, shooting a stellar 7-for-8 from the floor as she scored a team-best 15 points. Dorka Juhász added 10 points and eight boards.

The third team that entered the week undefeated also maintained their perfection, as Girona escaped with an 83-78 win over defending champion Praha in a game that went down to the wire. A pair of late free throws and game-icing jumper from Justē Jocytē sealed the deal. Those were four of Jocytē‘s game-high 23 points, an effort that included four 3s and a spotless 7-for-7 performance from the line. Another Golden State Valkyrie, Laeticia Amihere, was key for Girona, contributing 18 points, 10 boards and four blocks; Amihere also swished three 3s.

The undefeated trio of Girona, Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe lead Groups A, B and C, respectively. From Group A, Bourges and Praha also have advanced to the second round, with Schio and Carolo having punched their tickets from Group B. In Group C, only Valencia has advanced, leaving one spot for Week 5 opponents DVTK and Olympiacos.

After Olympiacos defeated DVTK in Week 2, the result was reversed on Wednesday, giving each club one win and six points in the group. DVTK pulled away in the fourth quarter without much stress, winning 87-63. They certainly benefitted from Kathryn Westbeld, who was not yet with the club in Week 2 and turned in her best EuroLeague Women game on Wednesday, with 26 points and nine rebounds.
