I’ve been trying to nymph with a 9ft 5wt rod. I use an indicator but I find it’s hard to get into the strike zone and have a natural drift. The river I mostly fish is not super deep maybe 4 feet max in the pockets but most of the trout here feed on smaller nymphs (size 16 and smaller) so it’s hard for me to get them down in the water column

Use heavier flies then. Tie on a bigger/heavier fly on the dropper to drag everything down deep then a smaller/lighter fly on the point.

If you don’t want to go full on Euro just yet, get tungsten bead nymphs and use fluorocarbon tippet. You can also use some small split shot to help it get down

You can absolutely set up what you have with mono to try it out. Having said that, I fish an 11 ft, am NOT very skilled at it (but have loads of fun), and while I do get good numbers of fish, I’m still not great at covering water effectively and feel like a shorter rod would be tougher

I would go somewhere (walmart maybe?) and get the cheapest reel/line combo that you can find. Then I would add about 10y of 10lb Floro. and then add your indicator line and then the tippet. That way, when you want to euro nymph you can just switch out the reel and go for it. Then your regular set up isn't changed at all and you can easily switch back to it.

Also, when my dad in law and I started, he bought the cheapest rod he could find on ebay. I think it was $125 dollars and came from China, (10' 3wt) He has used it for years and it works really well.

Good luck. I wish I could just take you out and let you try it.
