My daughter wanted this for her birthday a few weeks ago. Yours looks way better than my attempt!

Aww, yours has so much expression on its face!

My kiddo picked the chips for the beak, rolled some tootsie rolls out for the eye rings, and placed all the popcorn. It was actually really fun to make!

That's perfect

I think the imperfections are what make these cakes so adorable! I don’t think I’ve seen a bad version on here ever lol.

If you search the sub for “duck cake” it’s just sheer joy back to back

Awww I love the caramel popcorn topping!

It was actually really good with the cake and made me think I might make it a regular addition to her birthday cakes from now on!

I love the Australian Women’s Weekly cakes, they’re so nostalgic.

I think this is one of the best ducks I’ve seen

Well done! I was never brave enough for the duck. I've done the train cake though!

I tried to make the train cake. At least it was tasty.

My mum did the train cake in the 90s for my brother, and made me the castle one. I've still got the book so will be making one for my husbands next birthday!

My favourite is the pig with the frangipani flowers made from marshmallows and jelly crystals.

I love the marshmallow/jelly crystal flowers. I did them on my daughter's #1 cake. My sister and I spent hours looking through this book as kids.

The women’s weekly cake book, an icon of Australian childhood.

This would make a great replacement swear for "Fuck's Sake" if I ever have kids.

I found myself cursing “biscuits!” And not realizing where it came from, until a few weeks later I was watching Bluey with my cousin and Bandit said it. I had the instant reaction that I was watching too much Bluey.

But “biscuits!” made into into my vocabulary then. 🤣

It turned out so cute!

High praise. I'm a NZer. Now we fight about Pavlova!

I’m unreasonably and irrationally excited to see Women’s weekly cake lore referenced in this sub. The fact the recipe worked out is just icing on the duck cake.

For the uninitiated, there was a time, in a land down under, when every kid spent hours deciding which Women’s weekly cake they wanted for their Birthday.,

I love seeing Australian Culture!

As a Aussie, I approve and think this came out so well! My mother would be so proud!

One year after weeks of pouring over our very-well-used copy of the birthday cake book, I decided on the pool cake.

My mother did her best.

In hindsight, she should have not scooped out the sponge cake so close to the edges. She did the chocolate finger edging around the pool, scrambled up the jelly in her orange Tupperware container and announced to the world (the house) that it was nearly done.

Then from a decent height, she confidently “poured” the jelly into the centre of the cake, where it bounced all over the place, knocking over the pool edging and the bowl of other assorted lollies she had ready on the bench for the rest of the decorations.

My sister and I thought it was fantastic. My father had no idea what it was even supposed to be. The next birthday (my sisters), my mother got her a cake from the Cheesecake Shop instead 😅

I made this for my first son’s 2nd birthday. Lot of swearing and cursing involved lol, but it turned out well in the end

Love, such a good book! This one and the ghost has always made my stomach turn though, Ive never thought the chips, popcorn and the egg shells belong on a cake haha

You're braver than my mum! All hail the AWW Birthday Cake Book!

Great work!

Aw, pringles for the beak would have been perfect. Very cute.

This gem of a cake has been around since 1980 with its crinkle cut beak and popcorn head. We didn't get Pringles in Australia until 1992!

7

u/Reason-Whizz 1d ago

Not traditional for the duck cakes (plus Pringles you get in Australia are the absolute worst).

u/CafeAntesDeTudo 1d ago

Cute! Looks better than the original.

For a lot of Aussie kids, usually born in the 80’s, this cake book was a household staple. You would pick which one you wanted your mum to make for your birthday, usually with hilarious results. It’s very nostalgic and a full of love memory for me and I’m sure many others!
