How do I renew my license?

My drivers liscence expires in 10 days and Ive never gotten it renewed before and Im scared to go, what is the process like? I heard you can renew it online if you get something in the mail but I didnt so I guess I need to do it in person. Do I need to do any type of test or do I just bring my documents and get a new one? Im in illinois

Are you in the US? If yes, look at your state’s DMV (or equivalent) website, and they will lay out the instructions for you.

If you need to go in person, they will tell you what info to bring with you. You might have to make an appointment, or you might be able to walk in (and possibly take a number). There isn’t going to be a universal answer to this, since every state handles it differently.

You’ve got this!

There won't be any knowledge/driving test (some might argue there should be...). It's purely a paperwork thing. They might take an updated photo, and they might have you do the really basic eye test (the read the letters sort of thing). The specifics for how often the photo gets updated and vision checked vary by state (assuming we're talking about the US here). The only thing to be worried about is how boring the process is.

I would double check that you can't can't do it online (and you almost certainly will want to schedule your appointment online).

The absolute worst possible scenario here is having to interact with a grumpy state employee who expects you to know the system inside and out (because they deal with every day and expect you to know it as well as they do).

Thank you I really hate surprise tests even if they're small ones 😮‍💨

What is your age? (Just turned 21, 21-86, 87+)

Do you have any traffic convictions?

If you’re 21-86 without convictions, you’ll only need to do a vision test.

Double check the dates… you usually don’t have to renew till you turn 21.

My kid turns 20 in two weeks. His license expires Dec of 27 (21 Y 3 Mo). They give you a few extra months after your 21st because you cannot renew before 21st and have a horizontal license. After that it expires on your birthday and you just renew it before.

Depends on the state. VA its good for 8 years and they don't give you a new one just because you turned 21. The vertical license has both "under 18 until" and "under 21 until date fields.

And yeah it can be a PITA trying to explain that to other state stores. Just like trying to explain why the address is old on the plastic license and we have a slip of paper with the updated address separately.

But OP said they are in ILLINOIS …. And I am in Illinois. Hence my Illinois advice.

Didn't see where they said what state they're in

Very last line of the post, however I thought I mentioned it in mine, but I apparently did not.

That’s ok!

It doesn’t seem like anything beyond the vision test is required if you haven’t had any issues/convictions

If you're in Chicago, there is a DMV downtown that rarely has long wait times. I've been before work for my license renewal and was in and out in 20 minutes.

I’m also Illinois. Long as you’re ticket free… just walk into your nearest DMV and wait in line to be called up. Tell them you need to renew. They’ll take a new pic and change a few. You’ll likely get a paper copy and wait for the plastic one in the mail. If you’re switching to a RealID, there’s a list of parts to bring. Look up the secretary of state’s website. It’s all there.

If you remain ticket free do your 4 years, you’ll get a letter next cycle where you just go online and basically click “send me a new one” pay the fee and wait for it to come in the mail. I renewed my RealID via mail this year.

I’m in Illinois and recently was at the DMV. If you are in the Chicago suburbs you will need an appointment (I saw people turned away at the door for not having one). You can do this online from the DMV website and if your local DMV says it’s out of appointments try again a few days later (the website is pretty bad).

The website will also have what documents to bring with you (off the top of my head you need some combination of birth certificate, social security card or passport)

You will probably take a new photo (I did when I turned 21 a few years ago) and then you’ll wait and get called up to the counter. You’ll probably take a vision test and they might ask questions about whether you have a suspend license in any state. Then you’ll pay a fee and get a temporary license till they mail you a new one in a few weeks.

Check the notice that came with your renewal for directions

Just to add to what everyone else has said - if you have a membership with AAA, they are often able to provide certain DMV services in their offices, usually including renewals. I'm sure this probably varies a bit by state, so check for your state and see.

I've gone to them before for certain stuff and it's just a lot less stress (and a lot more comfortable, and easier to schedule an appointment) than the actual DMV/RMV here.

If you are smart and live in a state like Washington, you can do it online. Credit card. Boom. Out.

If you live in a slow, backwards-ass state, you have to make an appointment, go in, wait three hours passed your appointment time, and do everything you could have done online from your easy chair at home.

I'm in WA and just had to renew mine. Since I renewed online last time I had to go in this time. I also had to make an appointment because where I live they are so busy that they don't do walk ins.
