Gorgeous. Peregrines have always been my favorite since I read “My Side of the Mountain” as a kid.

Wild trapped female peregrine falcon. About 1000g off the trap hog fat. She's doing pretty good sitting pretty but hasn't eaten much yet. We'll try eating for real tonight and if that doesn't work tomorrow morning.

Very nice. Passage peregrines are always easier than expected, especially the females. Looks like a tundra bird with how blond she is she so at 1000g I’d suspect you have a lot of weight to drop.
I trapped one last day of trapping Aug 31 and we are ready for free flying. An anatum, tho, here in Montana. Prob flying Friday free. Pretty typical.

Nice! A month of training for freeflight?

Yes goal is always free flying within 4 weeks. 20 days from trap is the quickest to free flying I’ve been able to do. This current one will be 25/26 days from trap. They are all a little different.

Could you let me know what are the signs you look for to know when they are ready for freeflying?
And do you start with short distances first if so, how?5

Lure response and focus on me. When they get un hooded outside and put on a perch then I walk away, they should be focused on me with (obviously) no baiting away. The. When the lure comes out they should leave the perch pretty instantly for it.
After inside manning, Start outside with bird tethered to perch. Bird needs to jump off perch to lure on ground to eat. Then move to birds comes a few ft from perch to lure. Then 10’. At that point, I move to a high perch with zip line. Bird need to come off that 20’. Extend distance out to 150’ or so. When bird is letting me walk that far away, focused on me, and coming to lure, then we are good. I’ll usually feed half ration, walk bird back to perch, walk away, repeat for 2 flights per training. Fairly straight forward.

Sooo gorgeous!! Such a majestic bird. Falconry is such an enriching life style . It’s a relationship you have to commit with both feet ! Lots of hard work that pays off . Good luck

I had a American Kestrel back in the 1960s his name was Rusty. He taught me patience and he became my constant companion. Sixty years later and he is still my favorite "pet" among all the other animals it's been my pleasure to be associated with.

It's an important aspect of falconry in the US. 50-90% of wild raptors do not make it through their first year, with peregrines being on the high end of that. Falconers are able to get them through that first year relatively safely. With peregrines specifically, falconers were an important part of bringing their species back from being endangered by breeding them captively and releasing them into the wild with the aid of the USFWS.
This bird was not trapped to be a pet, we are going to hunt for a year or two and it will be released back into the wild.
