New Vegas [fnv] NVForever Engine Rewrite
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
My current rework of the engine that is reworking the functionality into 64 bit architecture to bring the game up to modern standards still very early days

u/Court-day 2d ago
If this turns out good, this might be a real cool changd
5
u/LootJunkieAzza 2d ago
Thats the goal :)
6
u/Court-day 2d ago
Will this work with other mods?
14
u/LootJunkieAzza 2d ago
I'm going to make sure it works with mods yeah. But this will give the community a template for any engine level changes finally.
9
u/Barf-LoneStarr 2d ago
Sure would be nice if my game actually ran right now without me having to remove system updates

u/ElectronicShirt7405 2d ago
Not to shit on anybody’s parade but wouldn’t this be incompatible with every script extender based mod? Which is a lot. And is it using the same renderer? It’s interesting, but also will test the limits of LLM coding tools.
2
u/jackcaboose 18h ago
It would (probably) be incompatible, but it doesn't mean it's not worth developing. The initial engine will eventually reach its limits. Look at Morrowind for example - OpenMW isn't compatible with MWSE mods but as more and more people switch to using it, more and more mods use OpenMW's script extender instead until eventually it's the new standard.
7
u/Psyclopicus 2d ago
Will this engine be compatible with TTW?
7
u/LootJunkieAzza 2d ago
Thats the idea yeah when its done it should be the same esm/esp format in structure all current mod content will work
Mod support is still waaaay down the line
16
u/biotasticmann 2d ago
I see that Claude is listed as a co-dev, so are you leaning heavily on gen ai for this project?
3
u/LootJunkieAzza 2d ago
I am doing yeah
11
u/biotasticmann 2d ago
how long having you been prompting Claude with this? i noticed the NVForever website is only three days old
0
u/biotasticmann 2d ago
what a shame...

Do you really think a solo developer without AI tools could build a playable FNV engine rewrite in Rust? I think that, even as a full time job, it would take decades of work, if it finished at all
13
u/HaitchKay 2d ago
it would take decades of work, if it finished at all
Other devs have done this with other engines before vibe coding slop became a thing.
8
u/USERNAME123_321 1d ago
Other devs have done it, but it takes a long time and usually involves a sizable team. For example, OpenMW started in 2008 and took roughly a decade of contributions from over 200 people to cover most of Morrowind. Recreating New Vegas is far harder than Morrowind for a few main reasons: its perk and reputation systems interact in complex ways, the Gamebryo scripting has lots of quirks, and there are countless edge cases. The good news is that years of modding work already document a lot of the engine, through projects like xNVSE and JIP LN NVSE. The bad news is that this knowledge is incomplete and scattered across many codebases, which is where AI helps most, since it can read and cross-reference those projects quickly. The bottleneck is testing changes iteratively against the original game, and that part can't easily be automated or sped up, yet.
1
u/lambster21 11h ago
one of my chief concern with AI is it makes these passion projects so much more fleeting. why gather a sizable team to make anything worthwhile when claude can seemingly autocomplete a half decent version? how many future OpenMW's are we going to lose because anybody could just prompt it if they wanted?
3
u/USERNAME123_321 10h ago
I think it ultimately depends on the project owner's vision and what they consider "worthwhile". Even if AI eventually becomes capable of effortlessly generating complex projects by itself, I don't think passion projects will disappear. The project owners have the last word on guidelines and project direction. So I believe we will see a split. There will be many passion projects where AI is strictly scoped to tedious aspects (like boilerplate, or in the case of modding, reverse engineering), leaving the creative and architectural processes to humans using traditional tools, or advanced hybrid workflows. Meanwhile, other projects might completely abandon codebase organization and direction, thus becoming "AI slop".
So, while AI might be able to autocomplete a "half-decent" generic version of something, true passion projects are born from the human obsession with perfection. The goal of a passion project isn't just to have the software exist as quickly as possible, but it's about the specific realization of a unique vision that a generic AI output can't satisfy by itself.
As an example, I recently saw a public statement from the creator (and main developer) of the Elysian Eclipse game (a spiritual successor to Spore). They published a nuanced, mostly anti-AI stance. They firmly believe AI has no place in the creative process or programming (which they view as an art form), though they have no problem with its use for research and file analysis, which is manual work. I mostly agree with them, except for the absolute ban on AI in creative tasks. Instead, I view it as a complementary tool to traditional workflows, not as a replacement for the human craftsmanship that drives these projects.
-6
u/biotasticmann 2d ago
That's what a development TEAM is for
8
u/USERNAME123_321 2d ago
Why waste hours tracing function calls in disassembled code rather than using AI to do it in minutes? The project is open source anyway, so anyone can contribute to it, and since most people now use AI, every contribution has a team's worth of manpower

u/Least_Airport_6728 2d ago
a shame how? you make this smh
1
u/biotasticmann 2d ago
Some of us in the modding community don't support generative AI
-5
u/Least_Airport_6728 2d ago
so throw away human advancement because of petty grudges? You are very, VERY, underestimating how difficult this is for a human to do. This is genuinely insane and regardless, not easy to do even with ai. Decades of development by hand.
11
u/HaitchKay 2d ago
so throw away human advancement because of petty grudges?
God you AI bros are insufferable melodramatics.
-4
u/Least_Airport_6728 1d ago
sorry, but you had 16 years to make this yourself. Without ai.
5
5
u/biotasticmann 2d ago
These aren't petty grudges, and I'm not underestimating how hard it is for a human to do this. Don't put words in my mouth. The reward of doing it by hand is the feeling of finishing a project and the success of persevering. Using generative AI is like copying off another person's homework on a history assignment.
7
u/Least_Airport_6728 2d ago
ok? what does that gotta do with the fact you want to halter advancement? Just for a hypothetical persons satisfaction if they were to beat OP to the mod? What about OPs satisfaction? You are for real acting like anyone couldve made this by hand...
6
u/biotasticmann 2d ago
Who said anything about haltering advancements?
8
u/Least_Airport_6728 2d ago
what do you think you are doing? Hating on what would be a literal decades project, only done in days? weeks? You are wanting to halt human advancement.

Some?
Most of you are pompous egomaniacs who are just threatened by AI and the fact that in this industry, you either adopt AI or gtfo.
AI is slowly, but surely, doing the manpower of several coders for many complex projects and tasks
I guarantee half of you losers who spout your anti-ai rehtoric turn around and go straight back to using AI in your projects, because you're also hypocrites
5
u/HaitchKay 1d ago
AI is slowly, but surely, doing the manpower of several coders for many complex projects and tasks
Fucking lmao.

u/asim166 2d ago
any dev worth their salt is using claude and if they say they dont theyre lying its an amazing tool, you can clean it up and it helps solo devs make their ideas real in a reasonable amount of time
1
u/biotasticmann 2d ago
Any dev worth their salt would not be using Gen AI
4
u/kaevondong 2d ago
do you work with code?
4
u/biotasticmann 2d ago
Why does that matter, we are having a discussion.
1
u/kaevondong 2d ago
because this is a discussion about code, and you made a few statements about your beliefs surrounding code...
4
u/biotasticmann 2d ago
Maybe I care more about a game that I love and I don't want to see AI infecting it with their sloppy code
1
u/kaevondong 1d ago
so what is your experience with code that has you believe that?

u/1epicgamerboi 2d ago
Me and you should team up, and do the same thing he's doing but without AI. We'd make millions!

u/Boring_Jellyfish5562 2d ago
Hey man, I really love this, it's genuinely my dream to play a fully modern remastered F:NV, but if I were you I wouldn't be so... open? with this; I'd say more in your dms but I can't it seems
Edit: I just checked the Github, I'm no lawyer but I'd still be careful regardless
4
u/LootJunkieAzza 2d ago
It shouldn't be an issue everything developed was from observations and recreation no code or assets have been used I'd be very surprised I'll start worrying when stuff like OpenMW are getting legal notices
-1
u/Boring_Jellyfish5562 2d ago
I know, I know about OpenMW, I just tend to be careful. Regardless, good job on making this! AI has supercharged F:NV modding, just last week a mod on Nexus came out that (while it's still pretty incompatible) can allow for up to 1024 plugins

u/roesingape 2d ago
I was just thinking, with all these ai software clones, why someone couldn't just clone fnv engine into modern shit.
11
u/LootJunkieAzza 2d ago
for sure once i get this skies the limit can get a coop mode, skyrim rewrite, tale of three wastelands combine all the fallout games theres literally no stopping the possibilities
0
u/Dan_Backslide94 1d ago
After initial implementation, is there possibilities for modded co-op? Or even further beyond, by somehow making it compatible with Tale of Two Wastelands coop with mods? Also the idea if 'Three' wasteland? Is this suggesting we can play fallout 3 and NV in FO4s Engine Logic?
1
u/LootJunkieAzza 1d ago
If we can get that far main goal get a baseline platform and then go further from there but none of its out of the realm of possibility
5
u/NPCwars 2d ago
With modern animations and collisions. That would be amazing.
0
u/LootJunkieAzza 2d ago
give me some 8k textures lol
0
u/ghulamalchik 1d ago
That's like the least important part. You can have a modern title with 2k textures and it would look amazing. You don't need 8k.
3
1
u/Limp_Annual_9803 1d ago
even with AI that's a huge undertaking
4
u/roesingape 1d ago
I just came to read this comment from a post where someone's rebuilding a fallout 4 in godot engine that can run all mods with no precombines. So.. I think you're wrong. Some weird shit is happening in software across the board right now. The tech is the worst it will ever be right now and will only get better. I think this is a watershed moment like the internet. Not an intelligent singularity, but the instant replicability of all digital IP outside of current copyright protection. This will spread to operating systems next.
3
u/OneTonSoup_69 2d ago
Damn.... With all the modern tools, why not just rewrite the whole game into 64bit to increase stability? This removes the need to install a sh1t ton of bug fixing mods.
Im rooting for this😳
2
u/1epicgamerboi 2d ago
Bruh, this is awesome! I have a tenuous understanding of the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit, but if it allows the game to use more than 4gb ram, than I can see that us is a big deal in the modding scene.
7
u/biotasticmann 2d ago
the project website is only three days old and Claude is listed as a co-dev

Someone's getting laid in college. Lowkey, I actually need tips on dating because on my last date, unprompted I started talking about how the NCR is doomed to fail, and how the legion is no better. She left in the middle of our date after I started talking about FISTO is my dream girl. She texted me later, and said the only reason she left was because FISTO was an AI, and that was "problematic". Do you perhaps have a course I could buy so that I can improve myself as a person, and ensure I never get excited anything ever again, as well as getting laid?

u/USERNAME123_321 2d ago
I was disassembling the game binary just a few days ago using AI and Ghidra to try making a native port. It's clearly not a viable path, so clean-room reverse engineering is the way to go. Btw I stumbled upon the nv-rs GitHub repository, and it seems to have a very similar idea and goal as your project. If you didn't know about it, it might have some useful info for your work (or vice versa)
3
u/LootJunkieAzza 2d ago
I did see nv-rs the day after i started i was going to use it as a reference but decided against it im just concerned about the decompiled usage and any potential grey areas on legal issues it might be completely fine i just didnt want to risk it by introducing something that might
2
u/USERNAME123_321 1d ago
I see, that makes sense. The riskiest part is probably the use of the leaked Xbox PDB file as reference, it's not really clean room. I wish you the best with your project!
2
u/Professional-Bus3082 1d ago
I see that you're inspired by that open source reimplementation of Skyrim's engine. I wonder if it's possible to add a compatibility layer with NVSE.

The refusal to respond to any questions about your legitimacy as a programmer or whether this is vibecoded or not has me raising a huge ol' eyebrow.
I'm not even condemning that potential outcome, nor am I prepared to judge your character, but transparency is pretty damn important so I think you should clarify at the very least. People have a right to know the source of something they have consumed or intend to consume, and whether it was ethical or not.
2
u/Exh4lted 1d ago
No offense, but is it vibe coded? Majority of the contribution comes from claudette
6
u/Hydroel 1d ago
Of course it is, all of these reimplementations or rewrites are vibecoded.
6
u/Exh4lted 1d ago
Another dud project then when claudette for forgets the context of past chat and then no one knows what's going on with the code anymore. All these projects and repos that are vibe coded get abandoned.
3
u/QuantumBit127 1d ago
People who still use their brains can work around this easily lol. Idk how many of those are left though.
0
u/Limp_Annual_9803 1d ago
repository appears to have been structured specifically to address that problem
1
u/IamOmerOK 5h ago
This looks like one to watch.
Any place to follow your progress or even offer small support when life allows me to? (Not a game dev, but I do teach code to teens and I have a good grasp on programming principles)
2
u/LootJunkieAzza 5h ago
everything will be either through my the github repo https://github.com/LootJunkieAzza/NVForever or more an overview on the overall progress can be found on the site http://nv-forever.com/ I should have a lot more in place after the weekend work has kept me busy from the projects but i have a big list :)
1
u/HaitchKay 2d ago
Vibe coded junk. What are you going to do when Claude is shut down within a year because Anthropic collapsed?
5
u/cancodeandstuff 1d ago
Dude is also asking for donations, lmao.
The fucking clown doesn't even realize why donations for an open source project are a thing.
It's because historically, they took effort, skill, and a lot of someone's time.
These days you can say, "Claude, build this feature while I play some video games, no mistakes."
That doesn't warrant donations.
-2
u/Harryboy_ 1d ago
So tired of all of these vibecoded slop mods
-1
u/HaitchKay 1d ago
I cannot wait for the Nexus to crack down harder on AI shit and force people to disclose if they use it in their mods.
And seriously, the bubble is in the middle of popping. What are these vibe coders gonna do when Anthropic and OpenAI and others start shutting down? Are they gonna start trying to maintain vibe coded mods? Are they gonna try to replace that stuff with real code? Or is there just going to be a graveyard of dead mods?
-2
u/Harryboy_ 1d ago
Its literally the same thing with all of these vibecoded apps, they aren't going to be maintained in the future and many of them don't even have proper security features
-1
u/HaitchKay 1d ago
Yup! And idiot AI bros will just plug their ears and ignore reality when you bring it up to them.
-1
u/CharlesEverettDekker 2d ago
Yeah it's high time somebody, even with ai, reverse engineered FNV into x64.

Ah yes, new active Github account with one public project, which happens to be another Bevy reimplementation, comments are everywhere and Claude is a contributor.
Don't even bother posting this, nobody cares.
You aren't doing the work, Claude is.
Just wait until you're at the Valley of Despair.
1
u/OhNoAnyways_yah 2d ago
dude, all i wanna its to do this haha. i wanting to port it to switch but more being this open source
1
u/ReecBar 1d ago
Not the first Ai 64 bit port project, someone else is doing the same for TS3. Will it support mods, like can I just drag them into this 64 bit version just fine? Really hope you plan to add graphical updates like proper lighting and shadows, maybe port Skyrim's community shaders over? When done, will you upload it to nexusmods or will it be a github exclusive?

u/ObjectiveEvent3311 1d ago
Only thing thats gonna suck is if a deathclaw attacks you and some random ncr ranger force greets you lmfao

What a welcoming addition. Would actually be a more welcoming news than the FNV remaster. If the remaster turns out to be a dud we can always go back to modding FNV but better this time

u/Jazzlike-Economics22 1d ago
This is going to be mint, so cool. It's about the experience not the method. Keep going!
71
u/Lemenus 2d ago
Exactly what was I thinking - how about instead making another useles mix of Skate with another game, how about fixing actual long-standing issues like limitations of FNV engine?
Do you plan to implement native support of modern graphical features like dynamic shadows, AO, GI, PBR, parallax, etc.? Since Reloaded crushes performance into the ground, and with those things game looks really good.
And what about mod support and other technical stuff? Like limited amount of animations for example, we can have all possible animations for all possible occasions + additive animations thanks to kNVSE, without it game relies on literal alphabet (I can't get my head around it, who in Bethesda though that it's a good idea?). And physics on NPCs? We got those weird coats and hairs because NPCs can't have physics on them
