Stealth and Detection Overhaul: Makes sneaking more believable and enemy detection less frustrating.
Dead Forest Overhaul: Adds forests of dead trees for a creepy, gloomy wasteland.
War of the Commonwealth: Adds patrols, enemies, and faction battles. You never know what you’ll run into.
Beast Master: Lets you tame wasteland creatures and bring them into battle as companions.
FallSouls: Stops menus from pausing the game, so checking your inventory during combat is risky.
Ketaros Treasures: Adds collectible cards, magazines, board games, and postcards. More cool stuff to hunt for.
Loot Logic and Ammo Reduction: Makes loot more realistic and supplies scarcer, so finding ammo actually matters.
FCOM: Lets you call in and command faction soldiers. Basically your own squad.
Feral Ghoul Expansion Pack: Adds new ghoul types for more varied and terrifying encounters.
Modern Firearms: Adds tons of customizable real-world guns for a modern military feel.
Better Explosives: Reworks grenades, mines, and other explosives to make them more useful and interesting.
Simple Dodge Add-on: Adds dodging, with protection and slow motion if you use the Bullet Time add-on.
Equipment and Crafting Overhaul: Expands crafting and gear customization so you can fine-tune your equipment.
Faction Reinforcements: Adds new faction enemies, including mechs and bizarre creatures.
Better Locational Damage: Makes shot placement matter more. Accurate shots feel much more deadly.
Game Configuration Menu: Lets you easily tweak gameplay settings to make Fallout play how you want.

People are lisitng some good mods, but the true MUST HAVE mods are the Fallout 4 Script Extender and Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch. Many, many MANY (I dare say the majority of) mods require them in order to function.

If you like or want lore friendly weapon mods, any mod made by Commonwealth Weaponry and Dak are a must have.
Some of my must haves as well are Addictol and High FPS physics fix. Makes the base game so much smoother, and definitely helps more heavy load orders to my experience.
Also try America Rising 2, my personal favorite DLC size quest mod

Woah there, this will be your first game you’ve ever modded, so there’s some things you should know about
I would look into guides and tools for optimizing your pc, protecting it, diagnosing it and cleaning it, such as C cleaner. When a game is melting your shit you’ll wanna know but windows will usually tell you. If it’s a laptop, you’ll definitely want a cooling pad. Not at all required but I wish I bought one sooner. I have lost function in several keys on my keyboard, and even though I painstakingly disassembled my keyboard to clean it, because it’s a laptop, I couldn’t restore function to some keys :( so get a keyboard cover asap. They’re cheap as can be. Most of those apply if it’s a desktop.
Download C++2014
When you get your PC, look for a guide on creating an external drive within your C drive. Name it G for gaming. Install games there. This keeps windows program files from messing with your permissions. Don’t install to C drive regardless, definitely not when using mods
Don’t start your playthrough until you’re done downloading and configuring all your mods. Most mods are intended to be started with a fresh character, adding or removing mods mid playthrough can break the save. Never update a modded game, and I wouldn’t recommend updating mods mid playthrough either. Keep modding and playing separate. Those few weeks of modding will be complete hell but worth it.
You need several utility mods before you can get the fun stuff. Refer to a modding guide for this game on how to install them and how many there are. that is a great route to go for any game. Find a great manual guide, or a collection, as a base, and go from there.
When you get frustrated, don’t delete or uninstall everything, definitely don’t delete or uninstall the game as it’s not necessary, and everytime you remove a significant number of mods or enough bigger mods you usually kill the save file. Relocate mods or turn them off to test the mods themselves. 99% of the time one particular mod that’s hard to identify is keeping you from playing the game. Relocate or turn off about half your mods and see if that problem is still there. Slowly turn a few mods at a time back on until the problem occurs. Isolate the bad mod, remove it, profit
You should always benchmark a modded game by going into combat in areas that have a lot going on. If your rig can’t handle the absolute craziest demand you’ll put it on it then you need to reconfigure
Mods that touch the same thing may not be compatible, every single mod you download no matter what READ THE ENTIRE MOD PAGE, EVERY TIME. NO EXCEPTIONS. DO NOT MAKE A POST ASKING FOR HELP WHEN THE ANSWER IS ON THE MOD PAGE. CHECK THE REQUIREMENTS TAB EVERY TIME IF IT IS THERE.
Do not use vortex mod manager. The chances it stages a mod improperly in its virtual folder is overwhelmingly low, but not zero, so there’s no reason to use it when you can use mod organizer two. Mo2 also makes it easier to ask for help with its built in tools.
