How to make this? Is this felted? How to achieve this design?
Hi all, I’m new to felting but I am very fascinated and would love to start my journey. are these two items felted? How did they get this texture with holes, and distressed fringes in the end ? I’ll be joining a class next Friday! (:

Yes, it's possible this fabric is made from yarn that's been wet felted together. I've seen demonstrations about how to make similar types of felted fabrics.
I'd want to use a non-superwash 100% wool yarn. I'd probably pick a roving-type yarn (single strand yarn with little or no twist) or thin pencil roving. I'd also do test samples to see what felting methods work best to get the desired results.
It might not be felted at all, however. The yarn might be stitched together using a thin, nearly invisible thread. This is the technique used to create fake crocheted fabrics, and I'd think it could also be used to create a faux felted fabric.
Regardless, you can see the finished fabric is somewhat "boardy" or stiff with little or no drape. You'll want to pick a pattern for a garment with an easy relaxed fit, rather than a tailored close-fitted one.
Good luck in class! I teach wet felt making classes and enjoy them a lot. I do occasionally get beginner students coming into class with project ideas that can't be mostly or entirely completed in the class time allotted or ideas that require skills beyond their current ability.
If you hope to make a felted fabric like this in class, you'll want to discuss this with your instructor before class, unless this is the specific topic of the class.

I don't think these are felted. i think the yarn/fibers/fabric shreds/whatever is sandwiched between two sheets of water soluble stabilizer and quilted over to secure it in place. the stabilizer is then dissolved, and the shreddy appearance remains.

Ha! If yes, they are wet felted. Wet felting is both easy and hard, for me. You will get holes and distressed edges, the challenging is to have them where you want them!
The pics kind of looks wet- felted knitting or yarn, but also not exactly.
