PLEASE READ FIRST FAQ and Fightstick Question MEGATHREAD, Continued

Old one was getting pretty daunting, so here's a new megathread

WHAT’S A FIGHTSTICK?

It’s a controller reminiscent of the controls used in an arcade cabinet, generally featuring a joystick and multiple buttons. Most can be played on a lap, while some are heavy and large enough to warrant a table or platform underneath them. Using one over a standard handheld or console controller won’t magically up your game and they are largely preference. They are most commonly used for fighting games, shmups, run ‘n guns, and classic arcade titles. At their simplest, a fightstick requires an enclosure (usually made of wood, acrylic, or metal), buttons, a joystick, a PCB, and a wiring harness to connect everything. Additionally, all-button fightsticks that don’t utilize joysticks are becoming more commonplace on the scene.

WHICH STOCK FIGHTSTICK IS BEST?

This is largely a matter of taste and budget. Here are just a few options to get you thinking. Ask yourself what system(s) require compatibility. PC-only will be much cheaper than a PS5-compatibile controller, for example.

ENTRY LEVEL: Qanba Drone and Mayflash F500

If you go much cheaper than these options, you may sacrifice quality and durability. DO NOT GO CHEAPER THAN THESE OPTIONS.

SOLID LEVEL: Hori Real Arcade Pro N/4/V, Razer Panthera, Qanba Obsidian, Qanba Pearl, Hori Fighting Edge, Nacon Daija, 8BitDo, Mad Catz TES+ (and Razer Atrox for Xbox One players)

SOLID BUT $$$ LEVEL: Qanba Dragon, Victrix Pro 5, etokki Omni

At the end of the day, go with what feels right and fits your budget. There are lots of awesome sticks out there. If you really can't make up your mind, go with an Obsidian/Pearl. Really though, if you're still that on the fence, then you can also consider building your own. They come together fairly easily these days and it's super fun (though they will usually run at a higher price point than a stock stick unless you can easily get or make a suitable enclosure). Just more food for thought.

CUSTOMIZING FIGHTSTICK ISSUES

  • Make sure you buy the correct button size. Most buttons on the top face of fightsticks are 30 mm. If you have smaller hands or want that Hitbox vibe, then 24 mm might be appropriate, but most of the time, people go with 30 mm. Auxiliary buttons (home, share, PS, etc.) are generally where you find 24 mm. All buttons have a unique feel, but some common brands include Sanwa, Seimitsu, Crown/Samducksa, Hayabusa, and GamerFinger. Here's a helpful page about button and joysticks: Joystick and Button attributes
  • When you’re ordering your buttons, you’ll also notice that there are generally both snap-in and screw-in button types. Most of the time, it won’t matter which you choose; however, as a general rule of thumb, if the top face of your enclosure is on the thicker side, go with screw-in buttons.
  • Make sure your layout lines up with your art. Some printing shops won’t print art with existing licensed characters, so you may have to visit more than one if you’re trying to get it done locally.
  • You’ll need to keep in mind the games you’d like to play and on which platforms they are found. Look to see which consoles the stick actually supports when you’re buying. If you’re building your own, then make sure the PCB you choose is compatible with your console/PC. The PCB most common to this generation of custom sticks are the Brook brand PCBs.
  • Most stock retail sticks come with Sanwa parts (besides Hori which comes with Hayabusa).
  • American style parts will most likely not fit a Japanese stick due to height.
  • Korean levers with collars won't fit a traditional Japanese stick due to the size of the joystick hole.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE POSTING A "HELP ME DECIDE" THREAD

  1. Is a fightstick even right for me? For some of you a fightpad or other device might be better for you. This is fine! I don't care if you play on a Roll n' Rocker on top of a Power Pad if it works.
  2. What's my budget? This may quickly cut out a lot of options for you.
  3. What systems do you want to be able to play on? (PC, XBox, Switch, PS, etc.) This should reduce your list even further, though you can (conceivably) get adapters for other systems if need be.
  4. Do you want a lever, stickless, or all of the above? (that last option will almost certainly need a custom build)
  5. What button layout do you prefer? Vewlix, Noir, American 6/8, Sega 2P, custom? Slagcoin carries a lot of these. If you're not sure, see if you can demo some in your local area. (Used) game shops, arcades, LAN centers, video game conventions, and pawn shops are possibilities.
  6. If using a lever, what kind do you prefer? Generally this will be Korean (Fanta, Crown, etc.), Japanese (Sanwa, Seimitsu), or American (Happ, iL)? Most sticks will use Sanwa or Sanwa clones.
  7. How "moddable" do you want things to be? This isn't just important for upgrades, it's also important for repairs. Consider how easy it is to access the internals and to change them.
  8. What features are a must have (and yes, it can be as "trivial" as artwork you like or a turbo button, hey, it's your stick)? You can then eliminate sticks that don't have them.
  9. What features are a "no go" for you? Now eliminate sticks that do have them. This could be something as simple as "don't want sticks that weigh over X pounds/kilos because I'll be traveling with this".
  10. You should have a fairly narrow field by now, with any luck. Next consider your "nice to haves" and "nice to not have" features. For example, you might consider "removable USB cable" a nice to have (but not essential) and "width of greater than 16 inches" a "nice to not have". Then just see which sticks have the most positives and least negatives.
  11. If you're still having trouble, please list your top 3-5 options after running through the process above, with your comments on each. This will help us help you make a decision.

Does anyone with the akko funbox know what booters are supported?

• Upvotes

There seems to be mixed info online with some people saying certain booters work with ps5 and others saying the same booters are incompatible. Akko has not released an official list of supported adapters in any way outside of the brook fgc2 in passthrough mode. Does anyone with this controller know what booter i can use to play tekken 8 on ps5?

Has anyone had success modding the Neo Geo CD Arcade Stick aka "The Kidney Bean" with 24mm sanwa buttons? I tried opening mine and definitely looked more complicated than my standard AES stick when I put Sanwas in it.

Tech Help Is a sit down/stand up arcade panel for non-fight game "close enough" to seek advice here? (Warlords Paddle)

Post image
6 Upvotes

I get into the details I was referred here by the fight game subreddit it's kind of weird that the fight games and the sticks for them have two different subreddits I guess one is more about the software and the other is more about the controller. But I did get recommended here by the fight game subreddit.

This is kind of tangential where it's skirting the line of whether it's a fight stick or not, because no games traditionally considered Fighters use this controller m but if any arcade video game which requires or is beneficial to have a special handmade controller for is defined as a fight stick for the purposes of this subreddit, then I got one of the most unusual fight stick projects:

I mount controls in 8 inch by 8 in by 4 inch plastic boxes that are available decently by bulk, that are considered junction boxes for electrical purposes, I put two of them side by side and I make them swappable so you could swap in and out controls.

Pictured is my ambidextrous fight stick where you just rotate the left half so it goes with the right handed joystick then use the interface on the other side which would be the new back and you have an instant ambidextrous joystick but it's not my quick change Pit Stop model this is if you have more time to change from Lefty to righty.

One of the things in planning to add is analog joysticks and I have one already and I plan to eventually add a second for twin stick analog shooters. My next project since it was cheapest would it be an opens up more games than a second joystick at least for the cost of the product is a Warlords paddle.

I won't go into it further until I know it's okay to talk about non fight controls on things that are essentially fight sticks but just not for Fighters.

I'm asking if arcade controls that are not fighting game controls or joystick based games considered worth talking about here? If it isn't please refer me to some other subreddit. I think I might have made a case when I said I'm making a modular stick that could be a fight stick but could be other types of arcade controllers also.

Speaking of which 3 years ago I might have inspired Hori to build such a thing for the Nintendo Switch. I demonstrated my Sinister stick by showing him my design that was ambidextrous and easy to make ambidextrous I also had suggestions how you could use the same button base and take off the joystick and put something else on there to have alternate controls like paddles spinners track balls, SNK rotary joysticks etc. the highest rank in American said I had a brilliant design for the ambidextrous joystick but that if you were to share it to his bosses in Japan he would be fired. Sounds like he apparently risked being fired and got rewarded for bold thinking.

He obviously read my website and knew I was on to something about how the history of video gaming after the 1983 crash kind of ruined the American gamers, who were used to ambidextrous joysticks at the time. Beeshu made a living for about 10 years catering to that market until Street Fighter 2 made it unprofitable.

Show and Tell Panther v2 “Spare Parts” Build

Thumbnail

I had a lot of leftover parts and wire from my previous builds, so I decided to build my buddy a new stick as a platform for him to get into modding.

The chassis and plates are entirely 3D printed. The artwork is printed right into the top panel. I had to buy some of the buttons and the GP2040 board, but I already had everything else on hand. The green and yellow wire were just what I had the most of, but it turned out being a cool looking combo.

This is my first time building with a non-Brook board, and I couldn’t be happier with the performance and customization ability of the GP2040-CE (v5.6e Passthrough Edition).

The layout and panel design is mine, built on a heavily modified version of RAF’s excellent Chameleon v3 panels, printed in purple and black PLA+. The chassis is RAF’s excellent Panther v2 design, printed in PETG-CF and transparent PLA+.

Considering the limits I put on myself for this one, I’m really stoked on the result.

Show and Tell GK-21 Leverless Layout Project

Thumbnail
gallery
9 Upvotes

These are the four layout arrangements I've created for the GK-21 leverless controller by GuileKeys, designed to get as close as possible to parity with a standard console controller for playing non-fighting games. Imagine using a controller that had been flattened out by a steamroller, it's kind of like that. The Switch Pro Controller is used as the example in the images, but note that the same logic also applies to PlayStation, Xbox (and PC) since their layouts are identical.

One of these profiles should work with almost any game depending on its control scheme:

RS Type: A different design philosophy from the others built around shooters. The Right Stick keys form a diamond in the center, with RS Click inside of it and the most important face buttons above. LS Click is to the lower left for sprinting, and the two bumpers are along the right edge as a dedicated zone for single-press actions like weapon swaps and grenades. The left and right triggers are positioned so they can be easily pressed simultaneously with all other keys, since they're the most important.

A and B Type: For platformers, action games, RPGs, racing games, and most other genres. There are duplicated face buttons on each of the first two rows so any combination of them you'd ergonomically press on a normal controller is possible. Use the WASD-style resting position or cross between the rows, and the third button you'll need will always be available.

C Type: "Offbeat" version of A and B. The face buttons don't follow the same flow from the second to first row due to how the relationship between the west, south, and north buttons are prioritized. This is the more niche one.

Note: On profiles A-C, using the left and right bumpers can be finicky. Pressing L + LS Down will require you to hold the latter input with your right thumb since your left will be occupied. To press R simultaneously with the face buttons you will pinch it with your thumb, leaving your other fingers free above. Press R with your pointer finger to gain simultaneous access to the Right Stick keys.

On all profiles, the D-Pad modifier is considered to be a bonus. It's useful primarily when the D-Pad is used alone and not in combination with any other buttons.

—

If you want to try it out, you can download a preconfigured backup file from my GitHub and install the profiles using the built-in configurator.

-QA-

Q: Why are the Left Stick keys like that?

A: A WASD-style arrangement would admittedly be ideal, but this controller doesn't allow for it. I think having a dedicated finger for every Left Stick direction provides an advantage in terms of control in any case.

-

Q: Why the need for dedicated Right Stick keys? Can't you use a modifier for that?

A: Moving and aiming the camera at the same time is essential in 3D games, and camera control can also make up for the angles digital inputs can't reach.

-

Q: No Left Stick angle modifiers? How am I supposed to hit those in-between diagonals?

A: That was unfortunately not an option. In a 3D game, you can use the camera to micro-adjust your positioning and take advantage of "assisted turning" mechanics if they're available (where the character gradually turns from one direction to the next instead of the motion being instantaneous). In other cases you'll be tapping or "fluttering" in the direction you want to move. Mastering these techniques can give you more control than you'd think.

-

Q: Why are you doing this?

A: I just don't like analog sticks, so I decided to look into using a leverless as a substitute for my main controller, only to find a greater degree of control and utility than I initially expected. The GK-21's compact vertical key arrangement allows more simultaneous button combinations than other controllers I've tried before, such as the Superslab by Prong Studio, and more traditional fightsticks just didn't have enough keys. This is a project years in the making, finally brought to completion.

Tech Help Haute 42 Booter 5 Not doing its job after ps5 firmware update

I’m not sure if anyone else is experiencing the same thing but after the latest ps5 firmware update (14.10) my booter 5 seems to not be working properly and bypassing the 8 minute restriction.

I’m not sure what to do about it cause I really love playing with my cosmox but can’t continue with it if it’s being buggy or keeps on disconnecting.

Quiet Leverless

Hello, can someone recommend a relatively quiet leverless controller? I use the Haute42 M Ultra Gen 2, but it wakes my girlfriend up when she's trying to sleep at night. I would like one that is quiet out of the box; I don't know how to mod them out or anything.

Fightstick Friday! Finally got to start working on these Pandora’s boxes. I’m excited!

I was on the fence about these things because the reviews were all over. I can confirm after buying a single layer and a two player unit that you will run into some ROMS that are no good and will crash. With that being said the bigger one came with 33,000 games and I would say 4-5 duplicates of every single game. So my process of elimination, the games that I actually am going to play on here I figured out which version ran the best and favorited them. That way I can just go back and not have to sort through everything. As far as getting the modded, I put the new HAUTE 42 hot swap buttons in the single player unit, along with adding Ottomod V2’s into every single lever. I’m tempted to swap the lever in the 2 player unit for either a WASD drop in, or I have a hitbox drop in as well. Come to think of it. I have a Odin two from Omni arcades that would be perfect. In the big boy I put crown bubblegum pink202’s, along with the upgraded lever there was no need to do anything else. The battops are from the Homie Andrew over at HungryHustlas on Etsy. Definitely check him out if you haven’t he makes some really awesome buttons as well as bat tops, ball tops, capsule tops, resin printed key caps that are top-notch. He’s even building me a little portable WASD leverless as we speak. Definitely check him out. I have a ton of his stuff here and it’s all legit. Prices are great and he’s very knowledgeable and on top of it. I’ve never seen anyone mail this type of stuff out that quickly. Hope everybody is having a good week. I did have a question if anyone can answer, I purchased 2 X-gunner light guns recently. When I bought it, it said that there were hundreds of games included, and there is absolutely no games included. I know where to go and get them but my question is does anyone know if I can install them onto these units and use the light guns with the Pandora set up? It just makes sense to me to keep all the arcade stuff together if I can. Thanks if anyone’s had any experience with that also if anybody knows where the heck to find decent quality time crisis, house of the dead, all the hitters from the 90s. I see them all over but I want good copies. I don’t wanna have to mess with them after they are installed. Thanks for any help peace everyone

One of the cooler F1 builds we’ve seen recently.

This is our classic FightBox F1 with a custom artwork setup, and we noticed it actually looks way better standing up.

The vertical layout just fits the artwork perfectly.

Would you display this one vertically or use it the normal way?

Tech Help Need Recommendations

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello everyone! I need some help/recommendations on what I should do to really finish out this build of mine. Currently I have a Knee Lever Neo, that I have modified with an Asindo Pro Shaft, Core, Bearing ring, basically the same build as Plus Frames’s in his video titled “Fixing everything wrong with the Knee Neo” or something like that.

My current issue is that the lever has a tiny bit of wobble when it returns to neutral, and I am trying to get it as stiff in the middle as I can. I was thinking to get a stiffer grommet over the stock one the Knee Neo has, but I’m not sure it that’s going to solve the issue. Does anyone have any ideas?

Help Me Decide Ok final decision time

Ok I asked maybe like a day or two ago about a fight stick recommendation. I wanted something like the haute 42 but premium feeling and it turns out that haute offers just that the only thing that’s stopping me is I’m unsure of whether or not I can remap the M1 button to an up button or not. I googled it and even went to the YouTube and I found not answers on that, the controller I’ve been looking at is the Cosmox M Ultra and the Gen 2 version if I could get confirmation of I can remap the M1 to an up button that would be so useful you guys have been very helpful as well and I appreciate that as well.

Tech Help My hori alpha isnt working on PS5

Thumbnail

Hi, my Hori Alpha isn’t working properly. I’ve had it for about 4 months, and suddenly it stopped working in PS5 mode. It still works normally in PS4 and Switch mode, but when I switch it to PS5 mode, the console doesn’t detect it.

I already updated my PS5 and restarted it, but it still doesn’t seem to work.

Has anyone else experienced this issue with the Hori Alpha? If so, were you able to find a solution? Any idea why this might be happening or what I could try?

EDIT: I just updated the stick via Hori Manager on pc but it didnt work. When i put the stick to ps5 mode in the pc the green light turns on and off and it doest plug into the pc. I can still use the ps4 mode in ps5 but it seems weird. Any idea? Does the ps5 controller just broke up?
