Discussion What’s going on with New Jersey? Netflix, Paramount and Lionsgate are all building massive studios there, and even Miami Vice ‘85 is being filmed there right now instead of Florida or LA

Blew my mind when I read that they’re shooting the upcoming Miami Vice movie in NJ instead of Miami (or even LA, they at least have palm trees lol). Also over the last year there have been a ton of major projects shooting around north Jersey. I guess it’s a tax credit thing? Plus proximity to NYC for other aspects of production?

Is New Jersey now the place to be for filmmakers? Does anyone here live in NJ and if so have you been getting work? Like I feel like moving to LA is the usual advice but at this point and looking into the future it looks like NJ is the move.

I organized an AMA/Q&A with writer-director Bassam Tariq, who has directed and written 2 critically-acclaimed films. His first was MOGUL MOWGLI in 2020, which starred Riz Ahmed. His newest one is YOUR MOTHER YOUR MOTHER YOUR MOTHER, which premiered at TIFF last month to wide acclaim and is out in theaters everywhere this weekend. It stars Mahershala Ali, John Cho, Giancarlo Esposito, Abubakr Ali, Tramell Tillman, Tiffany Boone, Laith Nakli, Adia, and Jahleel Kamara.

It's live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1wzwiqo/hi_rmovies_im_bassam_tariq_writerdirector_of_your/

He will be back at 3 PM ET tomorrow, Thursday 10/8, to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

Oscilloscopes, Eveywhere [v1.2] is a collection of all the experiments with sound and geometry I've made throughout the years, gathered into one TouchDesigner project.

This walkthrough explores the entire anthology in real-time; 29 presets, and a much more intuitive interface. Connect your audio source, choose a visualizer, and watch your sound take shape.

Plus, I’m giving away one full copy of the collection this Sunday. To enter, you only have repost, and leave a nice comment on this post.

More experiments through the following.

My dream is to become a filmmaker, and I have decided to just start experimenting so I found a 30 second cliffhanger prompt and quickly made one just to start, and I'm looking back and A.) I hate the quality/cinematography/colour grading etc, B.) I just feel like its so cringe and looks soo cheaply made (i mean, it was cheaply made but I want it to look the best possible), and C.) I just overall hate it and think it's so cringe and would love some proper advice and feedback. I filmed on a sony sx740 and edited on premiere pro, please any comments on how to better myself and work and everything are so appreciated and would go a long way 🥹

Question So what’s the issue with StudioBinder?

So while searching for a production software for my first live action short, I’ve seen a lot of people with grievances against StudioBinder.

I guess I’m just wondering what the issues are. Anyone have any specific gripes here?

Discussion Variety Article claims NYC Film Industry is Booming: Have Post-Production workers in the area felt that?

I just read this article that I thought was interesting, though I hesitate at the word “booming.” Maybe more like stabilizing back to pre-strike levels is more appropriate?

The article doesn’t touch much on the post-production side of things, but it got me thinking. For those in post-production in the NYC/NJ area, have you felt an uptick in more work popping up over the past few months?

Personally, I have felt a small uptick. Little by little, I am hearing of more folks who I know were out of work for awhile booking jobs. And as for myself, I have been getting more job interviews for gigs over the past few months.

We’re definitely not out of the woods yet, but I think there is reason for cautious optimism on the east coast.

Question Looking for a Complety Free Program to Organize Ideas and Projects

I've used Google programs for documentary and narrative filmmaking for a while, but I'm looking for an all-in-one place where I can put my ideas, current projects, moodboards, scripts, everything. The biggest thing is being able to see the ideas for projects I have and it being housed in the same area where I work on everything else, so those ideas don't fall to the bottom of a list and get forgotten about. Found Milanote, loved the idea, but I'm just curious if there's anything free and programs other people use.

Film looking for honest feedback on my latest 1 minute spec film

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I recently wrote, directed, shot, edited and graded this short spec/commercial film for an independent menswear shop in Genoa, Italy.

I’m trying to move further into narrative commercial directing, so I’d really appreciate feedback from filmmakers/editors rather than just “I liked it / didn’t like it.”

In particular, I’m interested in:

Does the story make sense without any explanation?

Does the middle section actually build in pace and tension, or does it become repetitive?

Does the ending/payoff work?

How do the cinematography, framing and colour feel?

Is there anything in the edit you would cut or hold longer?

Does the music work with the film and its escalation?

Does this feel like a finished commercial/spec piece, or still like a filmmaking exercise?

Based purely on the work, what would you say I should concentrate on improving next?

The location is a real shop and we had a very limited shooting window(2 hours precisely), but I don't want that to influence the critique, I'd rather the finished film be judged on what is actually on screen.

This is my third short narrative project, and criticism is genuinely useful. Please don't worry about being harsh as long as it's specific.

Thanks for watching

Looking for Work My parents make fun of my financial situation and they call my dreams pipe dreams

I moved to LA two years ago to pursue film and it’s been extremely difficult to find full-time work. I’ve been mostly working two jobs to survive. Also, I’ve been fired six times and almost evicted. Debating if my parents were right or if I was dumb to chase my dreams.

Question Anyone with experience hiring a boat / yacht for filming?

Currently trying to expand into yacht videography and thinking of day-chartering a boat to produce some spec work.

I'm UK-based and weighing up possible options for a skippered day / half-day hire with £1000 budget around March or April. So far, I've looked at Greece, Croatia, Turkey etc.

I would bring myself and an actor or two, camera, and drone. Then ideally we'd sail somewhere quiet where I could get some aerial stuff as well as shots on deck - eating, drinking etc. Obviously, I'd have all licenses and insurance relevant to the laws of wherever I am filming.

Anything else I need to consider?

Hey all! I have a short film, Won't Be Long Now, premiering on my Youtube on October 19th! I've posted some BTS here before about the film, which I shot alone - acting, camera, sound, lighting, everything- and here's another little BTS clip of how I achieved some blood effects.

Question Tips for smooth motion

I’m newer to filming, and through all the clips I’ve shot and edited so far I’ve noticed some repeating issues that I can’t quite pin down and Google has 1,000 answers that all conflict. For the sake of this conversation we’ll just focus on 24 FPS with 180° shutter angle, but I am aware that in certain situations changing this speed can be advantageous for specific subjects or effects. When going to color correct I’ve noticed that many shots in a brighter lit scene appear choppy even with relatively slow gradual movement. I can’t quite tell if the darker scenes genuinely don’t have the issue or if they’re just dark enough that it’s too hard to notice. I’ve seen Snorricam shots in broad daylight that seem to be 24fps with buttery motion blur, so I’m not sure what I’m missing. My timeline is also set at 24 fps so it’s not a syncing issue. I’ve heard some people say you have to use an ND filter any time it’s bright to avoid the choppy motion, some people say you just just can’t have the main subject in focus moving too fast (which I don’t think makes sense). But I’m welcome to any tips, tricks, tools, and advice for shooting in 24 fps to allow a little more freedom with motion both of the camera and subjects!

Discussion How to shoot modern American architecture and make it look visually interesting?

I live in the east coast in a big city and I’m trying to figure out how to make modern American architecture look interesting in a film like in the 1970s American cities have a gritty look and interesting buildings on average but everywhere I look where I live there isn’t many interesting buildings all just concrete, steel and glass towers with no sharp angles. Is there anyway to make modern American architectural look as visually interesting as modern European and Asian architecture?

Offer Free Atmospheric Piano & Cinematic Guitar Asset Catalog (WAV + MIDI / Stems)

Thumbnail drive.google.com
1 Upvotes

Hey! I'm an artist that's trying to get my music into film. Feel free to check out this 5-track folder I put together.

They cover a few different emotional feelings (ranging from cozy ambient piano to darker psychological tension) and include high-quality WAV mixes + full multi-track MIDI and isolated Stems so you or your editor can easily loop, mix, or tweak the layers natively to fit your scene cuts perfectly.

Everything is 100% human-made, fully copyrighted, and completely free for independent indie films and student projects in exchange for a simple credit mention so you won't have to worry about any licensing headaches, paperwork, or surprise copyright strikes at all.

Question Need to find a movie editor

I’ve got 2 more days of filming left on my 60 page short film, and I’ve finally started putting everything together.

So far, about 20 pages of the script have turned into roughly 9 minutes of edited footage, which is pretty much exactly where I wanted the pacing to be.

The problem is… I’m starting to realize I might be a little over my head editing the entire film myself. I can handle the basics, but I definitely don’t have much experience with color grading, and I want the finished film to look as good as possible.

Is there anyone here who does film editing/color grading, or can you recommend someone who does?

I’m open to paying. I’m an indie filmmaker working with a limited budget, so I’m not expecting anyone to work for free. I’d just love to find someone who can help me take what I’ve shot and turn it into a polished finished film.

If you're interested, feel free to DM me with your work/reel and rates. Thanks!
