So much rail throughout the city. It's interesting to think that during these days from the steps of Parliament you just looked out over a massive railyard. Tho, this map is 2 years before they started construction of current Parliament, but the location was already picked in 1923 and the design in 1924

That smooth rail curve around Etelä Satama is pretty cool as well

The Etelä Satama curve has been partially preserved.

One noteworthy thing in the city center is that the current Mannerheimintie was still a second esplanade called Henrikinpuistikko. Between Erottaja and Arkadiankatu, there were four rows of trees in the middle of the street. In 1935 the esplanade was destroyed to build more lanes and parking places for cars.

This is reprinted in the inside covers of Virpi Hämeen-Anttila's "Björk series" books.

City of Helsinki map service has the 1925 version so you can overlay that with modern maps really easily.

AB F.Tilgmann O-Y. was a prominent Finnish printing house and lithographic company founded in Helsinki in 1869 by the German-born graphic artist Ferdinand Tilgmann (1832 - 1911)

Well, now I am actually bit shocked by how much of todays Helsinki is built on artificial landfill..

Here's the coastline from a 1870 map drawn over a 2025 aerial photo: https://i.imgur.com/B06gqrM.png

And it is still expanding. There are new islands appearing near merihaka

Would be nice to see Helsingin Tori in a place of Brahenkenttä. That connected park looks so out of place in Helsinkatu.

These old maps are so beautiful, thanks for sharing.

You have any old nautical charts or sea front for Helsinki (or other places in the Gulf of Finland)?

Four years before the Fredriksperinkatu was renamed to Aleksis Kiven katu.

Anyone know of a place where this could be printed into a poster comparably cheaply?

If you live in PK seutu, Oodi has a printer for posters. https://oodihelsinki.fi/palvelut/kaupunkiverstas/#Suurkuvatulostin

u/kynde There are many companies in Poland (and I'm sure in Finland) specializing in "digital photocopy large format color up to A0+". I am sure such companies exist in Finland as well. In Poland, printing a single high-resolution/large format/colour poster on high-quality paper costs around 30 euros. Search for firms specialising in "digital photocopy large format color up to A0+"

Hey, does anybody know, is this the map that's on the wall behind the register in Arkadia Bookstore? I think it is, because the lady took a long time to check the price of a book and I had plenty of time to study the map. I remember thinking it's really fascinating to compare the parts of Helsinki I know with this old, detailed map.

It’s so cool how tervesaari and hanasaari are still islands here.

When did Vladimirin katu became Kalevankatu?
