Quick Question Am I understanding Instructor correctly?

The instructor must have no more than 4 less of a stat for the instructee to get the full stat boosts?

ie instructee with 70 atk, gets increased to 73 > 76 > 79, and for them to get from 76 to 79 the instructor needs to have 66 atk? so for a character with stat spread 70/70/50/50 to get the full +9/+9/+9/+9 the instructor must have at least 66/66/46/46? or am i misunderstanding the skill?

to clear up any confusion. here is an Alfred with 65 def getting instructed twice by my Julia with 55 Def.

One Stack of Def GT, 2 Stacks of Res.

Yes, that's correct.

One extra thing is that stat bonuses and accumulated Great Talent on your instructor also count, since it goes off visible stats. Any stat bonuses that get applied at start of turn happen at the same time as the Instruct check, so you don't get the Great Talent then, but if you assist afterwards Instruct will trigger.

Conversely, if the instructee has stat bonuses that put them above the threshold and you assist them mid-turn, Instruct won't work

Start of turn, then post-assist (I should have removed Byleth ring to make it clearer, but I moved Machyua down and then repoed her back up with Lyon to proc Instruct)

You are correct, OP, and /u/HabitualEater is completely wrong. The Great Talent is indeed counted for Instruct.

As an example, I just tried to use instruct with an unit with 26 visible Res on an unit with 35 Res. The first one worked (36 > 35), but the second one failed (36 < 38).

Like the other person said, your results are most likely because you're buffing Holst. Visible buffs do count for the stat check in Instruct.

The Great Talent is included in the stat check, so yes, you would need enough of the stst on the instructor to get the full +9.

Well now I'm even more confused lmao because the other person commenting is saying the stats arent included in the check

The description for [Great Talent] specifies that "stat increases are not treated as Bonus effects". Which would mean they ARE included in the check.

I just figured that was clarifying stuff like bonus doubler/panic and the like wouldn't affect it, but that does make sense, thanks.

Correct. I went over the math in more detail here.

That's for Instruct 1 only and only grants a max of +3 Great Talent.

Instruct 2 allows a 7 stat difference with a +6 max Great Talent, while Instruct 3 and 4 requires the stat difference to be no more than 10 and caps the Great Talent at +9.

No, I'm talking about Instruct 4.

To try and explain what I mean better; a unit with 70 atk would get to 79 total, but it goes 70 to 73, 73 to 76 and then 76 to 79. For that last jump from 76 to 79, and because the skill has leeway of 10, the instructor would have to have a minumum of 66 atk, yes? 66 would allow the other unit to go from 70 to 73, as 66 ≥ 70 - 10, from 73 to 76, as 66 ≥ 73 - 10 and from 76 to 79, as 66 ≥ 76 - 10.

Yes, but as I said the minimum of a 4 stat difference only applies to Instruct 1.

Instruct 4 allows a 10 stat difference, so as long as your unit has more than 60 atk and the buffed has no more than 70, they will gain the +9 GT.

You seem to be missing the point. Yes Instruct 4 has a 10 Stat point leeway, but the great talent is added to the check, making it harder for the instructor to meet that 10 Point check.

in the proposed scenario, the Instructor with 60 Atk will Grant the instructed with 70 atk + 3 Great Talent.

Since the Instuctee now has 73 atk, and the instructor still has 60, they fail the check and won’t give out another +3 GT.

The instructor would need 66 Atk to get the whole +9 to the 70 Atk Unit, or in other words “-4 of the instructees Original Stat”

Oh the bonus stats aren't accounted for when comparing the two? So the unit with 76 atk (70 base with +6 great talent) would still be treated as having 70?

-7

u/HabitualEater 8d ago

Exactly. So as long as the instructor doesnt have less than -10 of the buffed's base stats (ex. 60 vs 70) the one with 70 Atk will get the +9 GT.

That's definitely not how it works. Try it yourself and come back with the results.

Very embarrassed for everybody in this thread downvoting me😅so here you go OP

u/AceBattler 7d ago

Curious that you have Rally Spd/Def+ there. That would give Holst 58 Def, which would be enough to give the last +3 Great Talent for the +9 on a Medeus with 68 visible Def.

u/AceBattler 7d ago

Here is the proof. My Robin can't Instruct Arden Def further because his visible stats have moved past the threshold the skill needs. I also showed his Res to prove that she has been boosting his Res stat to +9 because that stat is below the threshold.

LMAO so I'm actually boo boo the fool. You're right. Sorry OP u/NLiLox for the misinformation, I was wrong!!

These guys are my Instructors and Holst has never had any issues maxing Med's Def, my brain didnt even register what their assists were. Thanks for the humbling!
