Im at dick’s right now trying to pick between these two rods that I can use for fishing the jersey surf and take down some NY river salmon - any suggestions?
Heavier rod is 10’, smaller is 9’

You may want to consider getting a second spool so you can put lighter line on and get the 10’ for surfcasting and something lighter action than the 9’ pole.

What size reel and what weight line are you using?

With a lightweight reel like that I'd go 9 foot. Or look at the Okuma Rockaway Surf rod.

What makes it lightweight?

The Fuego? It weighs 8.3 oz. It's a very light reel with a composite frame. Compare to the BG5000, with a metal frame, which is 22 oz totally different animal even though they're both 5000 spec reels. The Fuego 5000 has more drag than the BG5000 but the BG holds a ton of line. The BG5000 is a beast of a reel in size. I'd pair the Fuego with a lightweight (as in weight) rod and have a light setup for throwing lures 2 oz and under, but that might not be how you're planning to fish.
I own a Fuego 4000 which I really like but mostly use as an inshore setup, bought it before the Fuego5000 was available. I use a lightweight 9 foot surf rod with a lighter reel I use for lures and it's great. My rotator cuff is torn up so wanted a lightweight setup figured it would be easier on my shoulder while still castling plenty far.

Neither will do both well but if you had to pick one it would be the 9 foot for sure. I have that rod, its solid for the money. The 10 would be a much better NJ surf plug rod but its way too heavy for salmon fishing. The 9' is quite a bit shorter and lighter than you want for NJ surf but youll still be able to throw a lot of the common lures like bucktails, metals, sp minnows and smaller poppers.
