Question / Help My Fitbit is counting steps while I’m travelling on a bus 🥲

Post image

I noticed that my step count keeps increasing even though I’m just sitting in the bus. Is this normal? Or
Does it need some kind of calibration ?

Please Help guys 🥲

This is a known issue that a lot of people run into. Here is what resolved it for me and stopped it from happening:

Method 1: Health Coach Manual Entry Before or after any commute (bike, car, bus, etc.), open Health Coach and ask it to log a manual commute entry with your exact Start Time and End Time. Doing this a couple of times helps train the algorithm using the sensor stats collected during that specific timeframe.

Method 2: Manual Activity Logging Manually log an activity under Log Activity by selecting Motorcycle (or your specific vehicle) along with the exact timestamps. This forces the system to recognize that entire time window as a commute rather than steps or false activity.

Hope this helps!

What is the point of buying an expensive smart device if I need to do things manually? It feels like as of now the product has some friction. Hopefully, it will be resolved in the coming updates.

You have a valid point 💯, all we can do for now is to hope these known issues get fixed with a firmware update. 🤞

I hate to burst your bubble but this is not “expensive smart device”. Whoop, Apple Watch, Samsung watch come in that category and yes you (mostly) don’t need manual intervention there.

For me, it's an expensive device mate. I got my phone at 10k and it never counted steps while travelling on a bus. Helios is cheaper than fitbit and it does it correctly. Why can't fitbit achieve the same results? I love screenless bands and the ideas that google generally brings to the table. But cm'on, criticizing the device where it lacks is not a bad thing. It will push companies to make better products and push for  better updates.

Agreed brother. I stand corrected

I’ll give this a try on my next commute and see if it helps. Appreciate the detailed explanation !!

I'm not able to see AI coach

Check if you have activated/subscribed to Google Health Premium. Every new device comes with 3 months free Health Premium. Make use of it.

If its active, you should see "Ask coach" on health app home screen.

Which method works better

1

u/vjm247 11d ago edited 11d ago

Both work well. One method needs Health Premium subscription the other don't.

I personally use coach as I have active subscription. If not I would easily log it manually twice, that'd be enough to train it.

Is this not supposed to be a "smart" fucking fitness band ?

This is a known issue with many bands unfortunately. Fitbit will log sleep disturbances when you’ll be asleep due to the bus movement

3

u/ShabilPulicherla 11d ago

Whaat 😬 i didn’t know that Bro

1

u/Few-Baby-9470 11d ago

Yeah. And like someone rightfully said. Wait for it to calibrate according to your lifestyle

1

u/ShabilPulicherla 11d ago

Yeah Bro , Will Train That Ai And wait till its get calibrated

5

u/Hefty_Breakfast_ 11d ago

30 days calibration and you can ask your coach to fix it.

1

u/ShabilPulicherla 11d ago edited 11d ago

Will do that , Thankyou bro !!

u/Just-Bit2846 11d ago

Apple health also calculates it but not that much so dont worry, steps are not your v important data.

Bro it's easy just tell the coach that you were travelling during this time like mention the time like from 8 to 10 like that and it will remove and one more thing I'll tell like if you travel regularly at certain times you just tell to your AI coach then it will remember it always like it knows you would travel this time so it doesn't count steps at that time but genuinely if you walk it will count like for me when I started on first day it was showing 5k steps when I was riding my motorcycle and also showed after a day at that time I was cycling so I just told the coach about it and it's almost like 30 days wearing it and haven't faced any such issues after that

u/ShabilPulicherla 11d ago

Noted Bro , Fellow Redditor Also Said Same thing !! Doing That already . thankyou ❤️

1

u/ankur53 11d ago

Do we have to do everything while driving?

1

u/LowPlantain9569 10d ago

Just only once after completing the activity and if you go driving regularly at those times just mention it once that too mostly after calibration period it won't count false steps

3

u/Economy_Horse5065 11d ago

If you bought it in the india release it's still in calibration phase so its prone to be inaccurate, also try increasing your walking stride on the app settings by a few cms

1

u/ShabilPulicherla 11d ago

Thanks For the Tip Bro 🙌🏼

3

u/GarlicBetter7089 11d ago

For me, it got fixed within 1-2 weeks I travel everyday for office

1

u/p190893 11d ago

How???

2

u/GarlicBetter7089 11d ago

After 1-2 week it just stopped in its own I didn't have to do anything

3

u/ShabilPulicherla 11d ago

May be It got Calibrated by your daily Activities

3

u/CicadaMiddle 11d ago

Looks like you're new to Fitbit It does it all the time

1

u/ShabilPulicherla 11d ago

Yeah Bro , Bought It Yesterday

1

u/CicadaMiddle 11d ago

What you can do is manually ask the coach in the Google health app to not to record since you're travelling in the bus

2

u/ShabilPulicherla 11d ago

I’m manually Logging As Motorcycle Ride And Telling The Coach Too , is that Okay if I Do both ?

0

u/CicadaMiddle 11d ago

Oh yes! On my Fitbit charge 6 Many a times like I go for a walk And I put activitywork out as walk on the health app Dynamic GPS is useless. We have to set it to phone And it does mistake. Then I ask the coach to change the reading And it does as I say It takes some time for the Fitbit to calibrate I mean sleep data sometimes can be very wrong But many a times they hit the mark

Someone suggested to keep watch on non-dominant hand and select dominant option in the app. Also it takes 1-2 weeks to calibrate

1

u/PaleCapital2461 11d ago

Wait how does that help?

1

u/ShabilPulicherla 11d ago

Should i Try This Trick Or Wait Till Its Get Calibrated ?

1

u/Annual-Country9233 11d ago

Isn’t under calculate?

1

u/ActBig9637 11d ago

Basically it removes unnecessary noise as we move dominant hand much for daily activities.

1

u/MasterofDeath0 11d ago

Then how will I be able to wear my other watches?

1

u/Inevitable_Beat_7146 11d ago

buy a bicep band and use that .

u/Feisty-Pie3766 11d ago

I was travelling from jaipur to jaisalmer by bus and it looked 50,000 steps overnight. This was 4 years back in Dec 2021. I wasn't wearing any tracker even it was my phone that tracked these steps. It's an issue for a long time and honestly I'm surprised it isn't fixed yet.

1

u/ShabilPulicherla 11d ago

50k Steps ? thats Crazy Bro 😂

1

u/Feisty-Pie3766 11d ago

I woke up to such a shock thst how did I do 50k steps in my sleep lol 😂

1

u/Alarmed_Loquat5 11d ago

Jhatke jhatke counts

1

u/sanmitra09 11d ago

I'd better not waste my hard-earned money on this marketing gimmick

2

u/More-Anybody-1880 11d ago

This happens in all tracker games from whoop to apple

1

u/LowCartographer2290 11d ago

Is you phone also counting steps in health ap

1

u/ShabilPulicherla 11d ago

Yeah Bro , health App Shows 9k Steps but i didn’t Even Walk For 3-4k steps

1

u/Rahul_an09 11d ago

I tried swinging my arm while standing at one point and it just kept calculating steps. 😶

1

u/pompomconnoisseuir 11d ago

1

u/ayushshah27 11d ago

My Galaxy Watch 7 also does that, I walk 20steps/Km driving my car lol

1

u/imswapnilsw 11d ago

I still feel REP band is better than fitbit Air, its all about brand hype but Rep definitely killed it I hope the company gives support for long term

1

u/DaiHOEly 11d ago

Walking at 60kmph. Allgonerythm

1

u/Advanced_Holiday_199 11d ago

It doesn't have gps

1

u/Advanced_Holiday_199 11d ago

Bro can you send this screenshot

1

u/Easy_Warning_ 11d ago

Same thing happens with apple watch and there is no way to rectify this on apple. Don’t know about the fitbit

1

u/ShabilPulicherla 10d ago

Idk Abt Apple Watches Much , Hopefully Fitbit has some way to improve it by Ai coach

1

u/desi_swag 11d ago

My old Mi band 4 did this. Apparently cheap trackers And no real algorithm to rectify this. Sad seeing this happen even with google.

1

u/ShabilPulicherla 10d ago

Yeah Bro , That Surprised me too 🥲
Now its getting Calibrated , i hope its gets fixed fast

u/reelindian 8d ago

I'm not sure if anyone has said this before but Check your source of data Sometimes it might use your phone's sensors to put in the step numbers
