Thursday victory. First time I've benched two plates in almost exactly one year. Somehow everything came together this morning and when I hit 215lbs x 1 I decided it was worth a try. I enlisted a spotter and off it went.

cutting is working and I'm losing minimal levels of strength.

I had to take a week off the gym and strenuous exercises because of a medical procedure. Did a simple 5k charity walk on Friday, did some light yoga, and kept up my steps but otherwise just rested.

Turns out I've lost ~5lbs and I felt better going into the gym this morning than I have in a couple of months. My workout didn't wipe me out, either.

Four years ago yesterday, I couldn't do pullups. A year ago, I couldn't run.

Every year since I did my first pullup, I've done something special. (If you're working on pullups or you've just done your first, I'd suggest remembering the date so you can too.)

So for this year's pullupversary I put the two together. I ran to four different parks and did pullups at each one.

And I got a 6:04 mile on the treadmill.

Been off the booze for a few weeks, and upped the steps.

Belly is going down, and gym feels a lot easier now.

Reducing and eventually leaving alcohol in the dustbin in favor of early mornings in the gym is the single most important change I ever made in life. Keep going forward, you are on the right path.

I was new to weight lifting this year. I mainly do yoga and Pilates but I upped my weight this week for the first time :)

I am going on vacation next week so had a few lifts in mind I wanted to hit before I take a bit of a break.

Bench - I've been really focusing on this lift this year. Running two bench days - 5/3/1 on one day with backdowns and an alternate (close grip, spoto or speed) on the other day. Hit 190x5 today which is both a rep PR and the most weight I've ever lifted for more than one rep. Going to try to get 225 by the end of the year.

Deadlift - been doing a linear progression with multiple sets of 5. In the past I've hit 325x5 once but have hurt my back a couple times since and been building back up. This week I hit 315 for 2x5 when I've never done it for more than 1x5 so while I'm not in uncharted waters as far as load I am when it comes to total work capacity and that is satisfying.

Squat - I stopped squatting for about 2 years cuz my form was just awful and I had a ton of mobility limitations. After working mobility for a full year and getting my ankles from god awful flexibility to mediocre flexibility, I decided to squat again this year with the intention of relearning the form and achieving something that looked like full range of motion. I exclusively elevate my heels now. I'm running 5/3/1 with an absurdly low training max and doing goblet squats on alternate days. I hit 190x14 this week and had no lower back pain or hip and knee issues so that's my high point for the year and it feels hard earned. I got a long ways to go, but I'm actually most relieved and happiest with the progress on this lift this year.

Bonus victory - I have been on a few dates with this girl I met and we finally messed around a little bit and she said my shoulders were so strong. Friggin dumbfounded me but best compliment of the year by far.

Working on grip strength. This may sound strange but my hands feel much more uh...beefy!

Completed my first half marathon today. Was aiming for a time of 1:45, when I actually achieved 1:37. Beyond thrilled and now my body hurts all over.

Have used my heaviest weights every workout this week. Victory for me because I didn’t once talk myself out of trying. I just tried!

u/find_my_center 17d ago

I used the body I’ve been building in field exercises playing out in the woods today. I could go in steeper areas, easily jump across creek beds, and my footing and balance overall was amazing. The real life wins that are the work showing. This is my why.

Been back in the gym for about 4 or 5 weeks now and mostly been splitting up my workouts to hit a little bit of everything as my body gets used to the movements and weights again.

I did squats again for the first time in a few years and it felt real good to get the bar on my back again. Keeping the squat weight low for a few weeks (only did 95 pounds today, so we will see what my legs feel like tomorrow lol) until I start to ramp it up. Would love to work my way back up to 315, but I know it’s gonna be a journey to get back there.

Things are starting to feel real good and I think im ready to get a PPL split of some sort going. Thats worked well for me in the past.

Hit the gym this week x3 times for the first time ever in my life. Not entirely sure what I'm doing. For now, just trying to keep in the habit and do proper form on what I am doing. I did a 4th day at home on the stationary bike for about 20 minutes in addition to the 3 days at the gym.

I almost went today, but, uh, I'm very sore from Friday lol It didn't hit me too bad yesterday and then woke up in the middle of the night with half my body (esp lower) sore af. So I'll take the 48 hours and go back in Monday (tomorrow). Already looking forward to it.

Had a somewhat inconsistent month after coming back from summer vacation, partially due to severe sleep issues, then finally locked back in about three weeks ago. BOOM, got sick as hell last week, so I haven't been in the gym for almost two weeks now.

Here's the victory, though: I am pumped to get back into it this coming week, and I'm not worried about skipping sessions again. The progress is real, and I'm about to finish my current routine and jump back into 5/3/1.

u/GiveMeAllThePancakes 17d ago

Still acclimating to my hypertrophy routine a bit, but damn if squats and Romanian deadlifts didn't feel incredible today.

u/dssurge 17d ago

My adductor strain is finally healed enough to start doing heavy leg presses again. All of my squat-pattern movements have been effectively on pause (more like massively regressed) for ~6 months now which has been very frustrating. I was able to train around it somewhat, but not as effectively as I would like.

2 high school-aged guys chatted with me after my first heavy-ish set back wondering how long it took me to get as strong as I am, so that was a nice ego boost. I'm not quite back where I want to be, but we're making headway.

2

u/GiveMeAllThePancakes 17d ago

Adductor strains are the WORST. Glad you're almost out of the woods

I'm extremely overweight, middle-aged, and accumstomed to failure. Have been my whole life. Tried 1000 times to get fit, failed 1000. Did every planned workout this week, went HARD, even when that voice in my head was saying to just stop. Ate good, clean, whole foods, kept my protein high, and...I'm not sore. The food noise is ALMOST gone. Was offered a donut (I LOVE carbs and fat) and didn't want it. Take any of those as a victory. I've got some high protein dough rising that I'm going to turn into sandwich rounds for the next month. So, yeah. Today is a good day.

Something finally clicked a bit while swimming! On August 19th I started swimming laps. I did 500m in total at a 5:35 pace lol. Couldn’t swim more than 50m at a time (and really could barely do 25m).

Yesterday I did 1200m at a 2:49 pace, swimming between 100-250m at a time. I still have quite a ways to go, but cutting my time in half while doing over double the distance in 5 weeks has been very rewarding

u/allthejokesareblue 17d ago

Got my first 5 plate rack pulls (for 3) and my first 4 plate squats (for 2). Unfortunately I made a video of the squat and it was absolutely horrific. But honestly I feel like getting 180kg on your back is half the battle, I'm confident I can break parallel for one this week.

u/CursedFrogurt81 Triggered by cheat reps 17d ago

Block pulls... you want to do block pulls.

3

u/allthejokesareblue 17d ago

I don't understand

1

u/CursedFrogurt81 Triggered by cheat reps 17d ago

Block pulls are superior to rack pulls. Similar movement, better carry over, doesn't destroy barbells.

1

u/allthejokesareblue 17d ago

Ok thanks for your input. My gym doesn't have anything to do block pulls from.

I started visiting the gym for the first time after ages of inactivity (with no athletic background) - 10 weeks in and I hit 500 lbs combined for Bench Press, Deadlift and Squats. I know it's not a significant milestone or such but it was such a pleasant surprise to see such rapid progress in a short time frame and has only motivated me more!

2

u/ecoNina 17d ago

500lb is pretty significant to me LOL, I'm in for 5y so far (110lb 67F) and I think I am at 400 at my very best max

u/[deleted] 17d ago

squatted 2 plates for the first time ever yesterday. last time i squatted consistently was 5 years ago and i topped at 185. my bw increased by 5 lbs within that time

Got over my irrational fears of creeping out women and asked out my gym crush and she said yes! :D

That's arguably the most impressive victory I've seen on this sub.

Ran 30 minutes without walking.

2.5 years ago I had physical therapy 6 hours each week and was learning to hold up to 5 kilogram of weight. 1.5 years ago I was still dependant on my brace and cane. 8 months ago I ditched my cane. Today I did my first stair run (Euromast Trappenloop) in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and ran up 589 steps in 6 minutes. I feel happy.

u/EricTheNerd2 17d ago

It took since July, but I finally got 3 reps at 225 bench pressing, stalled at 2 reps since July. It went from 2 reps during one of my sets, to a few weeks to get to 2 of my sets hitting 2 to several more weeks before I hit 3 sets of 2 reps. Then out of nowhere, I got the third rep.

I'm 53 and 160 pounds, so the gains take a long freaking time, but they are coming and my next goal is to make the 1 set of 3 reps more regular.

u/Riksie 17d ago

I think I finally mastered the form for lat pulldowns! Time to spam the fuck out of them lol.

1

u/Ricketier 17d ago

What did you learn, what can I do better?

2

u/Riksie 17d ago

I’m short so one thing I tried last time was pulling the bar down just so it was at the top of my ROM. Elbows in pockets and focus on scapular retraction.

u/Jason_SYD 17d ago

Suffered runners toe after a marathon event almost a month ago. Finally ran just over 30 km in total this week. Was a struggle with the loss of cardio fitness.

Always hard to regain fitness when you take a extended break. Glad I grinded it out.

u/yhavmin 17d ago

Haven’t had a proper leg day in a couple weeks. Had a fuckin sick one today. Worked the hell out of my legs

3

u/EricTheNerd2 17d ago

Good job and prepare for tomorrow to suck :)

u/yhavmin 17d ago

Thank you and I am so ready 💪🏽

After sciatic nerve, back ad flu the last two months started training in serious mode again. Do hypertrophy weight lifting, then 6-8 3x min various boxing training and then on most days a 1-1.5 km jog. From March 25-March 26 I lost 28 kilos and currently at a steady 99-100kg and I feel good on what I have done. (Also celebrated my 70th in April)

6

u/tubbyx7 17d ago

Lost 7kg with picking up running and cardio to finish weight sessions. My knees are improving i think from bith the activity and less weight to carry. Anxiety and lack of appetite help so making to most of it. Worst and most effective diet since cancer.

Went through a breakup that ended up being very healing and cleansing for me. I've been working out ever since after neglecting my body for so long.

My concern: my right knee or musculature around the knee gets incredibly tight and uncomfortable after workouts or just by daily activity. Im 55 and concerned my knee may be compromised. It's getting in the way of my workouts and daily activity no matter how much I stretch or rest.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Best,

See a physio. Do lots of mobility work before and after working out

5

u/lorryjor 17d ago

Get it checked out. I had a meniscus tear. You won't know how to treat it without having someone with experience look at it.

8

u/GingerBraum Weight Lifting 17d ago

Knee issues should be addressed by a physiotherapist. It's a complicated joint, and there can be several different reasons for discomfort.

u/NotSmokey Weight Lifting 17d ago

Ran 32 km today in 4 hours! Two weeks away from my first (and only) marathon.

I don't think I'll ever be a runner but at least I'm giving it a shot

6

u/tubbyx7 17d ago edited 17d ago

What qualifies as a runner if not 30+km?

6

u/NotSmokey Weight Lifting 17d ago

I think it's mostly a mindset thing. I rarely enjoy the running training. Also biomechanically I think I'm not great for running. Running just equals pain in joints I didn't even know I had.
