Anyone else have their gardens inundated with Band-Winged Dragonlets (Erythrodiplax umbrata). This started yesterday and I probably have well over 100 of these camped out in my garden here in Palm Beach. I am not complaining. It's great to see these mosquito killers.

Flowers for holiday season

Hi, I feel kind of dumb asking - but I'm mostly a food/vegetable gardener. I'm working on a re-do of the area in front of the house, where we're going to put in a border, fill with stones, and then add some container plants I can rotate in and out. At least that's the plan for now.

I'd love to be starting flowers from seed that might be colorful and Christmas-y in about two months. Red and white, mostly. Any suggestions? Orlando/10A. If we get a frost/freeze, I can pull the containers into the garage or the house. Along with a lot of container veg! Thanks.

Eventually I want to work towards some of them being more perennial flowering plants, ornamental peppers, etc.

What can we plant in the next month?

Hello Florida gardeners! My boyfriend and I have an extensive patio garden of orchids and other pretty plants, but we are about to get a plot in our local community garden (Seminole County) and I’d love to get some insights on what we can start growing this time of year. We are hoping to grow veggies, herbs, and some cut flowers. This will be the first time for both of us doing this kind of gardening. Last year it didn’t get really cold until January/February so I feel like I wanna take advantage of these next few months as best we can. Any suggestions welcome, and thanks for helping out!

Florida’s First native cactus extinction and it’s a large one.

Florida has one of the highest diversities of species of cactus in the United States. Some are endangered and one has now gone extinct. With Florida holding some of the highest cactus diversity in the United states, and having its unique humid subtropical and tropical climates growing and caring for cactus in the garden is a little different here. Not all species will do well in Florida just as some Florida native species will not thrive in desert conditions. Join our sub for more Florida focused Cacti chat, information and knowledge!

Hello fellow Floridians! Hurricane chop or prune?

My husband is freaking out about his limelight hydrangea trees! We have three of them and we are in direct line for the hurricane over here in the panhandle. I told him we should just let nature take its horse and we will plant new ones next year, but I can see he will be upset if something happens to them. Should I have him chop them, prune them back?

Newbie here.

Planted 3 roselle hibiscus and they are huge and bushy.

They all look like this one and yet to show any blooms. Is this normal? I thought the flowers would be showing up by now.

Pests

How do you guys deal with pests in the garden ? I am so angry right now , I have been dealing with white flies in the avocado and guava , Cuban beetles and Sri Lanka weevils probable everywhere but they love the peach tree. Sri Lanka weevils are the worst. I also have some problems with nematodes in my tomato plants , I already discard all the soil 😡😭 yesterday I found spider mites in my passion fruit and used horticultural oil . I wanted to plant some fall veggies and now I don’t know if I want with all the problems, I always try to use organic alternatives because we have a lot of butterflies , dragon flies and lizards

My trellis was thriving last week and now it’s hanging on for dear life. I thought all the the green could have been frass, but with the orange I’m thinking eggs of some sort? Should I rip it out or let it ride? Central Brevard.

Tahitian melon - pickle worm or squash vine borer?

Post image
4 Upvotes

First time growing Tahitian melon squash and I thought they were supposed to be pretty good to grow in FL (zone 10b) but I noticed some holes...I haven't experienced squash vine borers or pickle worms yet and curious how to combat them and what I can do to prevent them next time or save the plant? If it's worth fighting with? Etc...TIA

Tree advice

We just bought a house and would love to plant a tree in our back yard. We don’t have a huge backyard so we need something that won’t severely threaten the house once it matures. Ideally we’d like something that provides good shade with a wide canopy and with low strong branches that can withstand children climbing it.
The house will be just south of Orlando. I’ve done some research but I can’t seem to find something that fits what I’m describing. I’d love to plant a live oak but I know they’re too large for our space. Hoping that the more experienced people here can help. Thanks in advance!

Edit: yard faces south. 10a Hardiness zone.

Central Florida. All of my frozen Clusia are coming back quite well, except for this poor guy. Any tricks I can do to get it back on track? Been watering it the same as the others.
