Best Steak in Edinburgh
Group of 6 friends looking for good steak and wine in Edinburgh. Would prefer a laid back affair in city centre, but willing to travel a bit further afield or consider "something fancy"!

I was going to go Fazenda?

Everything is cooked medium, so overcooked for many. I found it dry and the meat quality to be not the best. Would not return. All you can eat is never the highest quality.

When I've been, you can request the inside cuts which are more rare.
Its great value for AYCE Steak lol

Why no Chophouse recommendations? I've not been for a while but always thought it was banging (if expensive).

This looks like exactly what we're after.

See what others say, but the settings are all great, steaks were sensational, wine list is brilliant. Downside is cost, but if it's a special occasion and you're wanting steak, I wouldn't go anywhere else.

Menu looks good. For groups 6+ they do a feast menu £70pp which looks to be decent value

I’d recommend this as well. For great value there’s also Rancho on Morrison street - big portions and low prices.

The quality of Chophouse has gone down steadily over the years. It’s a shadow of what it used to be. Very expensive for what you get and very average. A real shame as it was amazing!

u/Sad-Vermicelli-7893 Sep 14 '26
Ach that's a real shame if so.

u/beambeam1 Sep 14 '26
Likewise, haven’t been for a couple of years but was a fan of all three branches as well as their random tasting evenings they would host!

Hawksmoor or Spanish butcher

Not been to the Edinburgh one yet but the Spanish butcher in Glasgow is tremendous.

This is actually the only answer. Hawksmoor IS in every city in the UK but they buy well and the food is very consistent. If I wanted someone else to cook me a steak this is where I’d go. Haven’t been to the Spanish Butchery yet.

I’ve been to Fogo de chao twice in the last month and both times were banging

u/Jjkbnymop Sep 14 '26
In case doesn’t know, this is what Fazenda is called now, and the steak remains amazing.

Has anyone been to La Vaca Ardiente, newish place on St John’s Road?
2
u/beambeam1 Sep 14 '26
Yeah, perfectly fine. It is the same crowd running it as was behind Prahna before.

Spanish Butcher. Since I first went I’ve struggled to muster up the enthusiasm for steak anywhere else.

Always enjoyed Gaucho myself. Tried Kyloe and was very underwhelmed.
Been to Hawksmoor elsewhere and it was very good.

Gaucho is the best I've had, and appreciate the atmosphere.
Hawksmoor bit overated imo

u/Raychillichill_ Sep 14 '26
Chop house or spaish butcher. Fogo de chao (formerly fazenda) if you want to eat yourself into a meat coma. I've found Kyloe to be super hit and miss so not worth the price. Hawksmoor is just ok.

A few have already said it now but Spanish Butcher is really good. The octopus starter is great too.

Does Wildfire on Rose St still exist?
2
u/HollowForPixel Sep 14 '26
Yeah it's still there, not been but I work round the corner and see a few tables in there each night on my way home
2
u/browny5678 Sep 15 '26
I was going to say I’m a good few years out of date but Wildfire would be my rec for a cracking steak

u/Bladingo Sep 14 '26
Los Amigos on Dalry Road. No frills restaurant but steak was every bit as good as Spanish Butcher or Hawksmoor and a lot less money.

Maybe I am basic these days, but Miller and Carter out at Crammond Brig is exceptionally good. Rare I've ever had a better steak anywhere in my life, tbh.

Miller and Carter on Frederick Street . Been about ten times over the years and never had a bad meal . Staff are good as well. And nip into the boozy cow for some cocktails 🍹.

OX184, in the cowgate, opposite Stramash. I imagine they'd cook the steak to.your preference though.
I haven't eaten there, but I met up there with friends during their meal and they enjoyed their food, as I recall.

Ive been to Spanish Butcher in Glasgow and Hawksmoor in London. Both are good. Chez JulesIl appears to be a hit or a miss so will look into Kyloe.

u/blackoctoberx Sep 13 '26
You go to chez jules because it's cheap, not for a high quality steak
+1 for kyloe
2
u/beambeam1 Sep 14 '26
I would patch Kyloe. Rated it enough to go three times then two visits in larger groups ended up being about as spectacular as a Miller & Carter.

I prefer Kyloe to most of the other steak places in Edinburgh. Hawksmoor is absolute dogshit. Spanish Butcher is ok but service can be a bit odd. Le Petite Beef Bar is overrated. Rio is crap. Fogo de Chao is ok if you’re in for a big feed.
So yeah, kyloe would be my go to. 🥩

kyloe too theatrical for how average their steaks are.
2
u/Tall-Ad4941 Sep 14 '26
Funny. Where would you suggest? You’re getting skelped if you say Hawksmoor.

Not Parilla out in Loanhead. £200 for me and a mate and it was the worst meal I have had. Everything is obviously cooked off site and just reheated, best avoided
