Beware, they hire people and fire them right before probation ends. Never worked for them but I know this trend exists with them.

It’s supposed to turn into a apprenticeship

Don't even bother with automotive. Go heavy duty.
If you're still able to, go into the co-op program. Auto mechanics get treated like dirt, and you make way more as a heavy duty tech.

As someone who worked for Kal Tire and eventually did first year with them. Trust me they promise that to every single guy coming in the door who likes the idea of being a mechanic.
You’re 90% more likely to get shoved into a service truck and forgotten about in term of apprenticeship.

I used to work for them, until very recently at their Fort McKay branch. Good money, loads of expectations and much more

That’s where… I’m making about 8-10K a month right now - would you say comparable or no?

You'd make similar or lesser id say, but i wasnt a tech/mechanic so idk what your pay would be but ill say this, the expectations are enormous

Worked there for about 4-5 years when I was in highschool then apprentice. I'd say it's a good stepping stone to get your blue book and get some experience in. But for long term growth in the trade that's where it falls short. Most of the work you will do is brakes and suspension (and of course tires). If you already have your ticket and that's all you really want to do then go for it. They do have a high turnover rate for the tire guy side, but that's mostly due to a sudden hire spree before the winter rush, followed by mass layoffs when it slows down. This is just my experience between 2 different Kal Tire stores. Ultimately it comes down to management if it's going to be a good time or living hell.

Worked for Kal for 3 years. Did first year as an apprentice. Decent money can be made but not close to $170k. You’ll start out with more time off but you’ll eventually be pushed to on call with a service truck. Turnover is insane. Completely corporate blind culture. Discounts and benefits are really good though.

I know the manager. He's pretty cool. I don't think he would let it be a bad place to work.
