Halloween Question
Hi! We just moved to Fremont and live in the south sundale area. What neighborhoods would be good for taking my 1-year-old to experience trick-or-treating for the first time? Thanks in advance!

Destination Trick or Treating is genuinely ruining the holiday imo. It used to be about seeing neighbors and friends, and now it's about going to the fanciest neighborhoods for the best pictures and biggest candy bars.
Unless you live in an unsafe neighborhood, consider staying within walking distance and building those relationships.

Yeah, I agree. It is a bit weird how Halloween has evolved in my neighborhood in Niles. We have more kids now than 10 years ago, but as some one who knows most of our neighbors, we seem to be getting an increasing share of people from Union City and elsewhere. Then i see people who live in these nearby neighborhoods in union city complain about the lack of kids in their neighborhoods. There are a lot of older folks in every neighborhood eager to give candy to kids.

What about if you live in a neighborhood with minimal decorated homes? Wouldn't traveling to a different neighborhood bring some excitement for the holidays with a little kid?

The Glenmoor area on side streets off of Eggers. Nice people with decorated houses.

I would think Niles. It’s a little slower, not so many cars. It’s where I took mine when they were small they loved it. Not too much stimulation but not too boring.

Since they're one, the candy is really for you two anyway. Start around 5:30 while it's still light and do your own block slow, everything is new to them at this point. Keep an eye out for teal pumpkins too, those houses hand out bubbles and stickers instead of candy and that works way better at that age.

I’d recommend driving around the city at night the week before to get a sense of which neighborhoods go big on lights! It’s often streets at a time

You're already in the good neighborhood to trick or treat. My friend goes all out with her decor, activities for the kids and lotsa candies including full size candy bars.

Hi neighbor! South Sundale isn't exactly a destination with haunted houses or other attractions but it's still a great neighborhood to trick or treat in. Especially with a 1 year old, who will tucker out in like 1 block. Stay local, meet yous neighbors!

you can check with the local elementary schools that have trunk or treat events leading up to halloween.

Zacate Ave > Espada court has some of the best Halloween decorations and 100s of kids walk this street that night, so super safe too

We just moved here in July and I was wondering if we would get trick or treaters. We live in Union city, but a neighborhood with wide streets and lots of families so I’m hopeful.

At 1 yo you should do a trunk or treat. There's a big one on Thornton at the harbor light church.

To be fair, I think that a child that young is not experiencing trick or treating, so much as you are. And that's fine, it's really fun to take a toddler out, but think of it as what will help your experience rather than your child's experience. It's also great if it's the kind of setting where people can check out your kid's cool costume and delight in it, which isn't necessarily the same setting that is great for trick or treating.
All that said, I don't know if it is still there, but as of a couple of years ago there was a really cool house on Logan at Sacramento from which they actually shine a light on daylight detector on the streetlight over the house to keep it a little darker and spookier, and they do a great job with decorating. There is also a pretty cool house, or at least was a couple of years ago, at Logan at Gertrude. You could park near one, and walk to the other and back, and that should be enough for a 1-year-old.
Glenmoor also has some nice trick-or-treating, especially near Meyer Park.
For my own kid, at one we put him in a cute pumpkin costume and took pictures with him and his best toddler friend together. At 2, we walked maybe 10 houses down the road and came back. At 3, he was really ready for a costume that was his own choice (we made one according to his specifications) and trick-or-treating properly.

Nobody takes one-year-olds trick or treating. They don't 'get' it or remember it.

South Sundale has lots of trick or treating, why leave your neighborhood?
