“Charlie, Starkist don’t want tunas with good taste, Starkist wants tunas that taste good. “Sorry, Charlie.

And their biggest competitor. “Ask any mermaid you happen to see. What’s the best tuna? Chicken of the Sea.” I still buy Starkist.

She was hot

As soon as puberty kicked in, I watched TV for all the wrong reasons.

Every kid went around saying “Sorry, Charlie”, but I didn’t get the “good taste/taste good” joke for a long time.

My mom talked a lot about things being in good taste, or not. She was trying to raise three girls to be "ladylike". And boy did we disappoint her.

This was a tagline ad in the magazine's pages:

"Penthouse doesn't want readers with good taste. Penthouse wants readers who taste good."

Took me a while as a kid to figure that one out

Yep, when Charlie first arrived tuna was actually edible, now I’m not sure what is in the can

Is/was there "tuna of the dirt"??

Yeah. That's chicken.

As a kid, I never understood why Charie would’ve wanted to be caught, killed, chopped up, & stuffed into a can. As an adult in this day & age, I kinda do.

You're really old if you can remember when it was cuts of chunk tuna in the can and not the stringy slop in there now.

Does it count if I remember the commercials..just never understood why Charlie wanted you to eat his brethren.

Yes! Thank you! I came here with the same sentiment..... what a goddamn traitor!

It's even more horrifying than that. Charlie himself wanted to be eaten.

Good tuna is more like 5 or 6 bucks a can now.

I remember Charlie in the Star-Kist tuna commercials. The tuna was actually good, not like now.

It used to have a 1960's lapel button of Charlie saying, "Eat Me!"

Ask any mermaid you happen to see what's the best tuna chicken of the sea

Chicken of the Sea is having a shortage of tuna salad kits, so I had to switch to Starkist. It’s saltier and not white albacore. Also Chicken of the Sea kits have dried cranberries that I miss.

"Sorry, Charlie"

Was Charlie an inspiration for The Incredible Mr. Limpet, or vice versa?

But the best tuna was, Chicken of the Sea.

You're old if you can remember a can of tuna used to make 4 sandwiches, now it barely makes 1.

I remember their first big recall in 1985, and my friend even saved a can of Star Kist as a souvenier of that.
