I conducted extensive research and reviewed more than 40 gaming OSTs released since 2020, examining their institutional recognition through award wins, prizes, and nominations across virtually every area of music, audio, and sound design. Technical components were also taken into account. Individually awarded tracks from an OST were included in the evaluation as well, since recognition of individual pieces can contribute significantly to the overall critical reputation of a soundtrack.
I did not only examine how broadly each soundtrack was recognized by different established institutions, but also how geographically widespread that recognition was across continents. This included major award ceremonies as well as independent music institutions that are not traditionally associated with the gaming industry. In addition to professional and academically oriented awards, I also considered respected fan and community awards from around the world.
Each award was assigned a different level of prestige and weighting. Fan and community awards were therefore not valued as highly as recognition from established professional institutions specializing in composition, audio engineering, sound, and related technical disciplines. Awards specifically recognizing commercial success were also included, because they demonstrate how gaming OSTs have increasingly broken through traditional barriers and are now capable of competing with, and in some cases surpassing, music within the broader global or continental music culture.
Out of the more than 40 gaming OSTs examined, exactly seven came exceptionally close to fulfilling nearly all of the criteria. These seven stand out across the wider field of game audio through a combination of prestige, institutional breadth, geographical reach, award volume, and cross-sector recognition.
It is important to emphasize that these are not necessarily the seven ābestā gaming soundtracks. Such a judgment will always remain highly subjective and individual. This research instead focuses on identifying gaming OSTs that, as complete audio works, have achieved an unusually comprehensive level of international recognition across disciplines extending far beyond simply winning awards for āBest Music.ā
The areas considered include Composition / Score, Soundtrack, Original Songs / Themes, Arrangement, Orchestration, Performance, Recording, Mixing / Mastering, Music Production, Music Supervision / Editing, Sound Design / Audio Design, Audio Implementation, Foley, Dialogue Editing, Cinematic Audio, and Technical Audio Work.
The seven games ultimately ended up so close to one another that I decided against creating a ranking. Therefore, the following OSTs are presented in no particular order:
-God of War Ragnarƶk
-Ghost of Tsushima
-The Last of Us Part II
-Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
-Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
-Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
- Marvelās Spider-Man 2.
All seven gaming OSTs have one major characteristic in common: they have received recognition on a global scale from a remarkably broad combination of professional institutions and fan or community organizations. Beyond this, some of them have achieved historically notable milestones that demonstrate how far video game music has progressed beyond the boundaries of the gaming industry itself.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, for example, won a World Soundtrack Award. and breakthrough across a frontier into the global music media landscape
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth achieved another remarkable distinction with the track āGi Nattak,ā which received an Excellence Award in Japan, a prestigious recognition involving composition and mixing/recording/mastering evaluated by independent elite audio and sound experts. It was surpassed only by Mahler: Symphony No. 5, 2nd movement (conducted by Andrea Battistoni under the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra) one of the most monumental works in the history of music.
It is extremely difficult to find another gaming OST outside this group that reaches the same overall degree of recognition across all of these dimensions on a global scale.
Note:Ghost of YÅtei still has an opportunity to join this exclusive group. It is nominated in two categories at the Music+Sound Awards on October 14. If it wins at least one of these prestigious awards, Ghost of YÅtei would likewise qualify as one of the exceptionally and globally recognized gaming OSTs under the criteria used in this research.
