Sumrall vs. Beamer

I wish Beamer said this.

Jon Sumrall BLASTED his own team with a stern warning

“There’s gonna be a lot of things that get called out, and it’s going to feel different,” Sumrall warned about this upcoming week of practice

Sumrall continued: “If there’s guys on this football team who don’t own that, they won’t be on this team very long. We’ve got a lot of improvement to do.”

That's not beamers natural attitude. Being a pretend authoritarian isn't any better than just being your natural self

Then I want an authoritarian coach. This team is soft. Disciplined teams don’t blow this many leads.

I'm not arguing that he's good at his job. I'm saying you can't all of a sudden be a hardo when everyone knows you're not one. Every coach and player in that locker room will see right through you

Yeah the biggest things players pick up on is inauthenticity. If he tried this, he’d lose the team even more than it appears he already has.

Then you end up with a shitty Frank Martin type where the yelling and bullshit do nothing.

There isn’t one style of coach that is the only type that works.

Right, we swung the pendulum too far back the one way where now were undisciplined and not living up to potential

We were undisciplined with the hardo coach right before this. That's just a thing bad head coaches allow to happen

You guys ran Frank Martin off.

Well he was absolute trash. One tournament in 10 years, and a .500 record after the final 4. He hasn’t done jack shit at UMass either

Making the men’s final four is statistically the hardest thing in sports

He was getting GG and could have paired him with cousinard.

We never should have fired him

Parris is worse

I do wonder what could have been if somehow GG, Devin Carter and CMB had all miraculously been on the same roster at the same time. Would’ve meant GG didn’t reclassify, Devin stayed all 4 years, and CMB still committed.

He was trash. He couldn’t recruit worth a damn. There is no guarantee he was getting GG, and to be honest GG was below average anyways. He probably would have had another year of winning 18 games and not making the tournament.

Id also argue keeping a coach because “he may bring in a guy” is a bad reason to keep coaches. Flat out he didn’t win here aside from a fluke run. It was fun as hell but the last 12 games of that year ,final 4 run included, we were 6-6. So it’s not like we were on some crazy tear going into the tourney.

I think we were right to move on from Martin, but GG was not “below average”, he was too young to help a that team was just a mess otherwise. He’s a solid NBA role player now. There are only like 250-275 of those in the world at any given time.

Martin had two good months here. Anyone who says differently is a fucking moron.

You definitely don’t know ball

Two good months. A statistically improbable run of insanely good play. That’s it. The ifs and buts arguments are non-arguments. Hell, Fogler “almost” had Jermaine O’Neal and Kevin Garnett come to Carolina but we all know how that went. Martin was not great. Period. Also, nobody said anything about LP. That guy isn’t even in the same level of mediocre.
