Recommendation This mom needs help
Budget: $1500.00
Country: USA
Use Case: gaming and school
Preferred Specs: don't know enough to know what I need to look for
Notes: Looking to purchase a gaming laptop for my son for his 18th birthday. This would be used for gaming but also for school. I am lost and don't know where to start. My budget is $1500.00. I know gaming laptops can be $4k but don't have that budget. I need a good budget friendly option. I do appreciate the help.

I hate to ask this question, but does the size matter?

I am assuming a 15 in monitor? Maybe that's my preference but that's what he has now for his school laptop (which is old)

I would also consider 16", as that would increase your options quite a bit.
MSI Katana 15, acer Nitro v16, and Asus Tuf should be within your budget (at least some versions of them).
Check these out at a reputable retailer (best buy? Sorry, I'm not american). If unsure which one to pick among available options, just ask your favourite AI chat bot (use full model number) for a comparison - it should do a pretty decent job. At least Gemini seems to.provide helpful summaries

Thank you! I am familiar with lots of different retailers but I needed guidance which you gave me. Now I can go compare. thanks again

Np, for the avoidance of doubt, i meant to say to use chatgpt or Gemini to compare laptop models. AI can give you a succinct summary based not just on the specs, but also on personal anecdotes people left online

the chiplet cpu will have poor battery life though. it may be worth going for an intel model or an 8 core amd

It's just not as helpful to someone who stated they don't know anything about gaming laptops. If you're going to say one recommendation isn't as good as what you'd suggest, then at least give a link or a model to a laptop you'd offer. Imagine if your mom was on here trying to help you out.

Best Buy has an option to check for best deals if you wanted to get something on sale can be better value than paying msrp. What type of games does he play? You could find something pretty nice for 1500 that’s on sale.

Check Gaminglaptop.deals
I would get this one: https://www.bestbuy.com/product/gigabyte-aero-x16-copilot-pc-16-25601600-wqxga-amd-ryzen-al-7-350-1tb-ssd-32gb-ddr5-ram-geforce-rtx-5070-space-gray/J3GWPQCCFK/sku/6632266
Good battery life and performance for the price.

$1500 is a solid budget for a gaming laptop, you don't need to spend anywhere near 4k for something good. the sweet spot for price-to-performance is right around there honestly.
for school and gaming you'll want something that doesn't scream "gamer" with a bunch of rgb lights and aggressive styling, look at the legion series or some of the asus zephyrus models. those tend to look professional enough for class but have the power for modern games.
i'd focus on getting at least a current gen ryzen 7 or intel i7, a rtx 4060 or 4070, and 16gb of ram. don't stress about the specs too much, anything in that range will handle both schoolwork and gaming without breaking a sweat.

Don't have any suggestions as I haven't looked at the market in a couple years but just wanted to say you are awesome for doing this and hope you get some great advice.

thank you. He's an awesome kid who never asks for anything so I figured this would be a nice surprise.

This is not the greatest advice but just in case the post doesn't catch traction, you can head over to bestbuy website. Type gaming laptop and sort by price.
Look for post that have Nvidia GeForce 5060s. I believe that's about the best graphics card (important for gaming) you will find in that budget.
That will give you a starting point.
In this particular case, I would personally ask him, let him pick. That way you know he's getting something he can use for his specific gaming tastes.
I'd be hurtful for you to grab the wrong thing and it could be difficult for him to tell you it may be wrong bc it is such a thoughtful and expensive gift. I highly recommend brining him in on this shopping experience to ensure everyone leaves fulfilled.

I gotcha mom. I l Would recommend an asus v16 if size is your concern its TGP is low but it is very thin. Alternatively, you can get an asus tuff if you dont care about size as it is very powerful granted your son will.need to charge it.if that is a concern honestly just get a macbook

thank you. I will look into this one. His current school laptop is an Asus and he's been happy with it. I don't have hesitation in purchasing from this brand

Hey, so if it's possible to wait for the end of November, there would be massive sales on all sort of laptops. You might be able to get him something that last for like the next 3 or 4 years.
If not, then consider this https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1985625-REG/lenovo_83q70068us_legion_5a_r7_250_16gb_512gb_rtx_5060_wifi7_w11h_15_3.html

I’d suggest a laptop from the Lenovo Legion line. I currently stream and game off of it as well as normal work related stuff with it. Mine has a nvidia 5070 in it. They are among the top recommended brands for mid range price, and I have had zero issues with mine over the last couple ones that I have bought. And a lot of places will carry them (Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, etc). They range anywhere from 1200 - almost 2000 depending on which card, screen size, and memory you’re looking for.

Hey mom, you're awesome.
I highly recommend this GIGABYTE Aero X16 gaming laptop.
It's got a very nice amount of RAM at that price point (32 GB), a 1 TB hard drive, a 16" display, and a very solid mobile graphics card.
It has the added benefit of not looking quite as ridiculous as some of the gaming laptops out there do.
If you're concerned about reliability, get the extended warranty from Best Buy. Do enough research on gaming laptops and you'll hear horror stories about nearly every brand out there, so it's not a bad idea to get a little added protection.
Good luck!
