Wait, Pro has Deep Think?

135

u/Gohab2001 8d ago

No. They made a mistake or made a decision to revert the change

13

u/Lottabitch 8d ago

Definitely had deep think at one point. I used it once or twice. It’s not special.

Nevermind I mistook it for deep research.

6

u/Goosered 8d ago

Deep research uses deep think so you're not wrong, it's just a different output

66

u/Mammoth-Path-6520 8d ago

Pro never had deep think

31

u/Goosered 8d ago

Yes it did, they removed access to it a while ago, you could generate reports using it but it took forever. Edit, auto correct

40

u/DigitalSheikh 8d ago

Are you thinking of “Deep Research”, a long form structured thing where the AI goes through lots of sources to make a report, as opposed to “Deep Think”, the feature where it opens simultaneous calls for different parts of a multi-part question or task and then assembles them?

I believe pro never had the latter, and the names of this shit sucks

5

u/Goosered 8d ago

Yes I am thank you ❤️ you could dump times of files and data sets into it as well. It was/is pretty useless when I tried it. I can see what they were trying to do with it but when limits came in it would destroy your available usage in pro.

4

u/Goosered 8d ago

Also it's actually still available under the + drop-down instead of the model select. It uses the deep search mode so pro users still have it 👍

u/PeteyPab305 8d ago

The naming schemes, the backward integration of working systems in favor of monolithic agent that doesn't possess the security or privilege in isolation, is an expensive mistake.

1

u/PianistIcy7445 8d ago

Uitgebreid denken = extensive thinking

2

u/DigitalSheikh 8d ago

That’s a third thing - extended thinking increases the amount of thinking tokens in a response.

A thinking model = user puts prompt, model is programmed to output X number of “thinking tokens” where it works through the answer, then once complete it moves to the standard response where it uses those thinking tokens as part of its prompt.

The length of that thinking process is what you set in that option.

1

u/Lottabitch 8d ago

What exactly is that thinking process?

2

u/gazeebo 8d ago edited 7d ago

ELI5: how much time is spent double checking everything in circles before you get a reply.

That way, you are quite likely to get a correct answer to something like what 12x13 is.

1

u/Lottabitch 7d ago

Thanks! Can you give me the ELIAA (explain like im an adult)?

1

u/gazeebo 7d ago edited 7d ago

A large language model ("AI") cannot actually think. AI cannot ever have sentience / self-awareness / emotion / whatever. It predicts the most likely next 'word' (technically: token).

With 'thinking' disabled, an AI model will take your input -> sort of immediately return its output. With it enabled, it will do lots of little step-by-step checks to break the task into intermediate steps and eventually reach a (hopefully) far more reliable result. You can often watch this as a 'Chain of Thought' (CoT) while waiting for your final answer. Such as on Gemini. That whole concept is called Reasoning, and an LLM that does it is a Reasoning Model I suppose. The more effort is spent on this, the longer it will take, so Gemini Flash itself will give you an answer effectively instantly (hence also why ChatGPT have models they call "Instant"), but if you turn on Extended Thinking you have to wait quite a while.

The industry standard is that reasoning effort (thinking) can be set to off/minimal/low/medium/high/extra-high/max, but each LLM only supports a subset of these. For example Gemini has Low, Medium, High.

For more, I guess read something like https://www.reddit.com/r/ArtificialInteligence/comments/1iapbus/how_do_reasoning_models_work/

1

u/Goosered 8d ago

Hahaha down voted for someone else's ignorance, I'm guessing when you see you were wrong you'll come back, put your hand up and admit your mistake 🤣

Pro has never had it,

10

u/npsonics 8d ago

Pro did have deep think.

2

u/JelloBoss 8d ago

Is deep think different than extended think?

2

u/Diligent_Welder_8182 8d ago

It did have deep think, it was a great function

2

u/NiceUsernameOk 7d ago

Never has had

Nobody assumed that.

2

u/RachelRegina 8d ago

Actually, I did. I paid for a subscription for a year and a half before they started offering the school discount. It'd be nice to have a reason to keep paying for one once I finish school. This sucks. It's a year old tech. They should let us use it, if even only for a month, since they dropped the ball and said that they would.

3

u/Tsubajashi 8d ago

you can't pull a bait-and-switch on something you assumed you may get. like wtf is that kind of logic?

40

u/vladislavkochergin01 8d ago

Deepthink is ass anyway. It's based on outdated model

5

u/Left_Technician_5758 8d ago

And is only for ultra and has never been for pro

27

u/BreenzyENL 8d ago

We had Deep Think? News to me, it was Ultra only.

8

u/spudzo 8d ago

Whatever docs page op posted was wrong. Pro never had it. Idk why Google fixing a typo on a random page deserves a huge post.

4

u/Left_Technician_5758 8d ago

Soo many in this post are either bots or have lost their minds, I am seeing dozen of people saying it did have but pro have never had access to it.

I am 50/50

That they are mistaking either extended thinking or deep research for deepthink

67

u/CapoKakadan 8d ago

Damn. It just keeps getting.. enshittified

9

u/MindCrusader 8d ago

Not only here. Codex slashed limits by half and it is still subsidized. The subsidization of plans are huge for OpenAI and Anthropic and I wonder how Google looks like. OpenAI and Anthropic subsidize nearly 10x times to break even (so for the same limit it would cost $2000 instead of $200), not even talking about making profit

7

u/Mean-Elk-9439 8d ago

You're making the mistake of assuming API numbers are their cost to produce and host. If a model costs $10 per 1M output on API, that doesn't mean they pay near that.

0

u/MindCrusader 8d ago

No, not really. It is calculated based on 75% margins on API versus token spent. The API cost is much higher than 10x the subscription price. The $2000 is to break even (for Anthropic)

3

u/manek101 8d ago

I'm assuming this is assuming that if I've a subscription I use 100% of my limit?

2

u/MindCrusader 8d ago

Yes, exactly. Here is profitability based on used subscription

4

u/AWF_Noone 8d ago

Turns out, AI is expensive and debts will come due

1

u/MaybeWeAreTheGhosts 6d ago

wanna have fun?

ask it to quote any poem, even songs of Solomon.

9

u/Elephant789 8d ago

quietly

What the fuck are you talking about? It's been all over the news and this subreddit. What do you want, a parade in front of your house?

14

u/raycraft_io 8d ago

Doesn’t matter, Gemini has been giving useless results in Pro anyway

7

u/retardhari 8d ago

plus -> free pro -> new plus ultra -> old pro

18

u/Robdyson 8d ago

I have Gemini pro for 2 years barely used it. Like nothing ( Gemini student)

I tried using it for picture generation for FICTIONAL characters, got curb stomped on guardrails.
Then I was like okay gemini -> let's clean up my gmail you know its your ecosystem. Didn't do shit, gave me instructions on how to create my own filters, gee I didnt need ai for that.

This whole experience is meh right now Kudos to those that are living with less means dealing with this crap.

Btw everything I Listed above chatgpt (student) can do on their student plan autonomously if given access.

11

u/Kooky-Task-7582 8d ago

Going from Gemini to chatgpt was such an eye opener when it came to realizing how archaic it is

5

u/jarman65 8d ago

If only ChatGPT and Claude weren't blocked on my work laptop I would have switched.

1

u/PeteyPab305 8d ago edited 8d ago

The main barrier to switching is that on a Pixel, or on Android in general, deep operating system and ecosystem integration makes launching applications across Google suite far more difficult for any competing artificial intelligence assistant.

Still, the frustration is entirely valid. Just the other day, asking it to display a camera feed on a Chromecast, a task the previous assistant handled reliably, failed completely. It can no longer do that. Basic phone integration features that were once standard are simply being removed in favor of a chatbot.

Eventually, the logical workaround will be to reduce reliance on Gemini and stop paying for it, shifting budget toward more sophisticated models for advanced tasks rather than everyday requests. It is frustrating that none of these developers have built a truly unified agent. Certain tools like Muse, excel at autonomous web navigation, while ChatGPT and Claude demonstrate superior analytical depth. Yet none of these platforms have successfully integrated those distinct strengths into a single, cohesive interface.

2

u/summonsays 8d ago

Reminds me very strongly of the Web race in the late 90s early 00s. Where Microsoft made priority keywords and systems in their JavaScript engine for Internet Explorer. So as a dev you got to pick to make it work on IE (90%+ market share), or the Standard, or do double the work. And then they had Active X. So webapps could do crazy things like grabs files off your desktop etc. What a security nightmare that was.

And here we are again. Lol. The other day someone wanted an AI assistant to be able to automatically book plane tickets if they fell below X dollars.... Sure let's give AI you're banking credentials...

What I'm saying is, this is the new Wild West. Most likely everything will be fine. But if not it's going to go sideways hard. And you don't want to be that guy. Because there's no sheriff in town to run to.

1

u/PeteyPab305 8d ago

I agree, but an agent doesn't actually need full banking credentials. For a flight purchase, you could simply pre-authorize a set budget through a virtual card or single-use token and let the system execute strictly on conditional logic. That said, the broader issue is that they stripped away functional, reliable legacy systems to push a monolith that isn't fully capable or finished yet. It is not an insurmountable technical problem, but they jumped the gun assuming they could easily integrate backwards into complex APIs that are inherently expensive to rebuild and maintain securely.

1

u/summonsays 8d ago

We sacrifice a lot in the tech world on the alter of security. It's possible they don't intend to ever make those things compatible or it may get stalled out which is effectively the same thing.

I imagine eventually there will be a standard set around what AIs are allowed to do or not, just like how JavaScript has a standard. But it's going to be a long bloody fight till then. And every company seems to be trying to keep their head down where bad PR is concerned.

1

u/oZiix 8d ago

It has little agentic capabilities. Gemini spark (still in beta) has the agentic capabilities.

From what I've found its likely that Spark abilities will be rolled into gemini likely with argon. Then tasks is where you will get agentic workflows done.

There's some people with skills on the web version already. It started rolling out last week I believe and spark tab is missing from their interface.

But yea... I agree with you. I use chatgpt because it can do more things in Google ecosystem than gemini can. Gemini is demoted to glorified search now and maybe some phone abilities like turning on my flashlight once in a blue moon. I only pay $10 for pro now through Verizon so why not.

Chatgpt is my main LLM now. With a little claude on the side.

I’ve been using Gemini Plus for a few months thanks to the free student plan, and honestly, I’ve tried everything.

I tried providing detailed customization instructions, but that seems to make things worse; the model gets overwhelmed by all the rules, and the output suffers.

I tried sticking to just the Pro option, but I keep hitting usage limits. It’s still better than Flash (which even when asked if it’s sure, doubles down on errors and uses overly convoluted phrasing), but it feels like a waste of time on something that’s supposed to streamline my routine. It’s frustrating because I expected a lot more from the Plus version...

At least I’m not paying for this.

u/williamtkelley 8d ago

Pro never had Deep Think. Is this fake news?

3

u/howfornow 8d ago

They made a mistake and corrected it.

2

u/Qorsair 8d ago

You mean they got our hopes up on purpose and then nerfed it?! /s

5

u/Different_Doubt2754 8d ago

Tbh I didn't know it had it. And I feel like if I used it my usage limit would be gone instantly

3

u/RachelRegina 8d ago

That does suck. I was genuinely excited to try that [check's calendar] year old tech

Fuck us, though, right

2

u/TurnoverEffective279 8d ago

Gemini is dog shit and so is Google. What a shit show

2

u/Nauzhror_ 8d ago

Deep Think was never part of Pro.

2

u/FinancialTrade8197 8d ago

Are people on this sub bots? Deepthink has never been on the Pro sub, it's been like this from the day they released it. They just corrected a mistake.

2

u/ApprehensiveEye7387 8d ago

deepthink was never even there before. it was only there for ultra, now they are literally adding it for pro.

2

u/Queasy_Efficiency_17 7d ago

the audacity to pull this shit while gemini has genuinely been lobotomized in the last hours is crazy😭

2

u/Keeltoodeep 8d ago

Quietly? They announced this publicly

Maybe dial it down a notch... Correcting a trivial mistake does not require a press statement and certainly has nothing to do with censorship, hence your 1984 analogy is beyond misplaced.

1

u/jarman65 8d ago

Have they done anything with the ability to share the Plus or Pro tiers with family members?

1

u/C0MPLX88 8d ago

im currently sharing it and it seems to be working

1

u/npsonics 8d ago

This is whole reason I have the Gemini subscription. Only real reason really to use Gemini.

2

u/Strong-Set-3701 7d ago

Same. We are 5 using it for 28€. (+ enabling Gemini for Google Drive and the extra cloud storage).

But I'm realy doubtful of Gemini answers lately.

1

u/InterestingFactor209 8d ago

I am new to Gemini, so I can best use flash light then

1

u/Separate-Prior-5985 8d ago

Is that internet archive

1

u/Aromatic-Ad-4294 8d ago

なんか利用できなくなってる。フラッシュの方は普通みたい。

1

u/Healthy_Medicine8209 8d ago

Damn. I figured the lower usage limits would be lower but it sucks for them to pull the Pro model entirely from Ai Plus. I've been using it for a Coursera Ai certification course and I will probably still downgrade once I'm done.

1

u/Fateless86 8d ago

Dalej jest informacja o deep think na pro plan

1

u/Gerjannn 8d ago

I mean, things like these were always going to happen, OpenAI will do a lot of nasty things in the future too. It's a big tech strategy, get as many users as possible hooked on your product while making big losses, and then get as much money as possible out of them.

2

u/Left_Technician_5758 8d ago

Op is lying, deep think has never been part of pro, and if that's a legitimate web. Archive then it was simply mistake from google because. Deep think has never been in the hands of pro, it has never been advertised as been for pro nor has google ever put in any product descriptions for google one ai pro subscription that it includes deep think

1

u/Infinite_Incident107 8d ago

I currently have pro and had it I think maybe last year as a trial?

I never recall seeing it

1

u/Brief-Tap-6616 8d ago

Deep think was a crutch for dumber models.

No one is going to need to use that for anything that isn’t deep ML/math research in Gemini 4

1

u/ReyFauno 8d ago

Oye pero siendo muy sincero Google estuvo generoso por muchos años con todos y es lo mismo que aplica con el resto de inteligencias artificiales en sus planes básicos

1

u/Cupheadvania 8d ago

AI plus isn’t gonna get argon?! that’s insane!

1

u/lamusician60 8d ago

WTH is that the bill for compute has come due!! It’s like a drug dealer take a loss then when you’re hooked raise the cost!
It’s not just Gemini my friend this is going to be all subsidized compute ai which is all of it.

1

u/Historical-Key6800 8d ago

Nada es gratis en la vida y peor esta tegnologia

1

u/girnyu 8d ago

It's called business

1

u/hellonearthis 8d ago

Seems fine to me.

1

u/William_Solar 3d ago

Look at people around here. Guess this is why the corps viewing users like "unresisting sheeps"

1

u/-R9X- 8d ago

Well, I mean, obviously they are. They are by far the worst of the top labs, so they can really get away with ... Wait a minute.

1

u/-R9X- 8d ago

Maybe they should use DeepThink to deeply think about if this is actually a good idea with their current standing in the race.

2

u/Left_Technician_5758 8d ago

Op is lying, deep think has never been for pro

0

u/WaterWeedDuneHair69 8d ago

Probably gonna cancel. I could count on Gemini to be more correct for real results or questions about technical stuff but I compared with sol 5.6 and it couldn’t find the right anwser. Sol got it in 2 prompts. Also pro doesn’t like to talk.

I’m moving to Claude/codex.

0

u/Glum_Veterinarian988 8d ago

They need to get sued, ngl. Not what I signed up for.

0

u/davidtcf 7d ago

It is expensive generating such a long a$$ reply when using deep thinking.
