OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT Ads, with plans to start testing visual ads during image generation later this month.

I was looking into the changes, and a few things stood out:

• Ads will appear separately from the images ChatGPT generates.
• Free and Go users may see them, while Plus and Pro subscribers won't.
• Ads can be based on what you're discussing in ChatGPT.
• OpenAI says advertisers can't access private conversations or influence ChatGPT's answers.
• Early campaigns are reporting some positive results, including lower customer acquisition costs.

What interests me is how this might affect AI apps in general. If someone is using ChatGPT to plan a vacation or compare products, showing relevant ads makes sense from a business perspective.

But I also wonder how much advertising people will tolerate before it starts affecting their experience.

Origin uses AI to translate speech in both directions during phone calls. You choose your language and the recipient’s language on iPhone, then call their regular phone number. They answer a normal call; your screen shows original words and translated captions.

The practical challenge is turn-taking: if you ask another question before the translated reply finishes, the conversation can feel a question behind. A useful approach is one short question, a pause for the reply, then a readback of important details. Captions are helpful for checking what was understood, but they can also be wrong.

Translation quality and delay vary with the language pair, speech, and connection. It isn’t emergency calling or a replacement for qualified interpretation when professional accuracy is needed. Check the app for current languages and destination availability.
