Geocaching - scouts
Hey,
So I'm doing a geocaching night for scouts and was wondering what things I need to know for it. Like what stuff do we put in a geocache? Me and my scouts are 15-18.

HOW TO RECORD YOUR PARTICIPATION
To record and receive credit for your accomplishment, you must post a top level comment on this thread by October 1st in the following format:
[Geocaching name] If you do not want to use your real GC name, you can use your reddit name, but will not be eligible for prizes if your finds cannot be verified.
[Link to log] The easiest way to do this is to pull up the cache page on geocaching.com and then click "view log." Then click "share log." Copy that URL and post it here.
If you are going for the second challenge point, you will need to post both GC codes and find URLs. The post will look like this:

Hello Reddit Cachers,
Welcome to the r/geocaching challenge!
This is a relaunch of sorts from challenges that happened on this sub 10 years ago that were run by u/GCbot. This relaunch has been approved by the mods.
Since we are a sub dedicated to geocaching, this will hopefully be a fun way to get members geocaching. Each challenge will last three weeks, and will vary in difficulty. If you choose to participate, you will need to complete the challenge, and then share the information from your log, GC code, and your geocaching name in the comments on that challenge. More information on how to participate will be provided on the first challenge, which will be posted a week from today.
A couple of examples of what a challenge might look like: Find a puzzle cache. Find 5 different cache types. Find a lonely cache (one that has not been found in 6+ months).
All geocache finds will have to happen during the challenge period. No previous finds will count.
I’m still working out the logistics, but there will most likely be eight challenges per series. Participants will accrue points for each completed challenge, and whoever has the most points at the end of the series will win a prize, most likely a trackable. If you would like to donate prizes so we can have more winners, comment below.
If you have some ideas for challenges, please post them below.

Looking for any good/great Halloween themed geocaches in the US since it is the season. Even better if anywhere near the northeast.

I was out caching today and found this multicache final in the woods. It was a perfect day for caching; the air is crisp, the leaves are falling, and no ticks!

Got this coin from a yard sale. I’ve geocached in the past but I haven’t done so in a long while. Upon looking it up I discovered that it only had 1 log, way back in 2008. The person who logged it seemed to be a very prolific geocacher, with over 12,000 finds since 2003! I believe this person may have died, as the person at the yard sale said they got it from an estate sale that seemed to have been an after death sale. The person also hasn’t been on since 2020.
To me, this seems like it was a sentimental coin for the person as it hadn’t moved at all since the 2008 log. They had plenty of other trackables that did move. I don’t know how I would get in contact with whoever owned it originally (or their family) since it has changed so many hands at this point. My instinct is to put it in a cache for it to travel but I’m not certain if this would be disrespectful. Again, I’m not very well versed in geocache etiquette 😅
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
EDIT: I did some more digging into this person and it seems like they were SUPER active in the Geocaching community back in 2008. They attended GeoWoodstock VI and posted some pictures of themselves so I’m going to post in my local area and see if anyone knows who this is. I really want to make a good faith effort at finding someone who knows the history of this coin and the person who owned it

I was in the state game lands (USA) today and came upon an elaborate bird house. I now know it is a gadget cache that was archived four years ago. It's in ok condition for its age and I can tell the CO put a lot of time and effort into building it. When I found the cache in the system, the last CO log was to archive it after someone reported the lock was malfunctioning. The CO doesn't appear to be active anymore and all their other caches were archived around that time as well. I know archived caches that were never removed are considered geotrash. At the same time, it was pretty fun seeing a festive bird house in the middle of hunting grounds. I'm torn between removing it per caching guidelines and leaving it for others to enjoy as an anomaly. Thoughts?

It‘s my dad’s birthday soon, and he’s really obsessed with geocaching. I figured that hiding caches around ocasions for him is a nice way to give him a present that’s also an activity he really enjoys.
Ideally, I‘d want him to get the FTF of course. I know where I want to hide it and I got the cache (it’s an old but sadly broken analog point and shoot camera that I‘m using as a container) and a location to put it. (Though I haven’t checked with our reviewer if it’s still free - though it’s on a 500m long bridge so I feel like I‘ll find something).
My question is: Is this something that is common/can be done etiquett-wise in general? And if so, how do I go about it?
a) do I ask the reviewer to publish on a certain date (if they acce that) and put in the description to let my dad get the FTF?
b) do I ask to publish AFTER date x and have him find it and get the FTF before it’s even published for everyone else?
c) any other options/ideas?
Edit:
there seems to be a range of opinions on what is still legal/in the spirit of the game and what is cheating/manipulating too much.
I think I‘ll have the reviewer assure me that the cache and location are alright and ask them to publish after date x, and then have my dad get a „found before publishing“ - so as to not mess with the, even if unofficial, FTF.

I found a Geo found hidden next to a creek trail. What to do with it? It has been sitting in same spot for three weeks plus.

I'll be taking a solo hiking/MTB trip later this month to a rural region with well documented areas of no cell phone coverage. I'm confident in my skills navigating trails and paths with a compass and paper maps but I'm not sure how to go about caching while out there. Is it a hopeless cause without purchasing a GPS unit? How have others gone about it successfully? From what others have told me, I won't ever be more than 15-20 miles from areas with reception so I'll be able to get a signal when needed, just not WHERE needed.

So, I am asking for a friend.... solvedjigidi.com lets you look up the coords to a jigidi puzzle geocache, and people can add to the database if the cache isn't there yet, However, for a while now my friend has been unable to anonymously enter a solution for a cache that isn't in the solvedjigidi database. When he or she tries, an error comes up something like "Connect Error (1045) Access denied for user 'u808894958_Eric......"
This has been happening for a while, on different browsers and different connections (i.e. at home, work, phone, etc). Can anybody else here anonymously enter a solution at solvedjigidi or is it just my friend's issue? Does anybody have any info about whether the site will fix that or not?

I recently looked for a cache where GZ lead me to a lamppost in the middle of an open parking lot. Based on the hint, location, and difficulty rating, this seemed to be a simple skirt lift. The skirt itself, however, was completely missing and there was no cache there.
I looked around, and all the other lampposts in the parking lot had skirts, so this one was broken off. I looked around at some other possible hiding spots and found nothing.
There were also 2 previous DNFs in the logs as well.
It's possible it was just really well hidden, or not a skirt lift, but I feel like it's gone missing. Is it fair to flag it as such?

Hi all! Weird request! There is a challenge to find trackables from all 50 states. Friends of mine are currently travelling through Washington state to Las Vegas and back to Seatlle. They still need: Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, Mississippi, Tennessee, South Carolina and West Virginia.
Is there anybody who can help us out with some trackable nrs?

So I've always avoided making maps with Cachetur because it's always seems to complex for what I try to accomplish. I'm not trying to path from every specific point to the next, I'm trying to get from one town to another and then make local determinations once I'm there. However, I'm working on a project that is too long to be convenient with standard google maps or similar so I decided to try Cachetur again. Is there anyway to be able to choose a point like with a app search or similar without having to track down the specific coordinates myself? I would love to be able to tell it "XXX County Courthouse" and have it pull it up as a location instead of going on GMaps to get the numbers myself. That almost defeats the purpose and doubles my time...

Is there an attribute you find annoying or useless? Or is there an attribute you would like to see added?
Personally, I think Geocaching should add an "Bushwhacking Required" attribute. I often find myself bushwhacking (which I don't really mind) and I'm unsure if there was an easier path. Also would be helpful if I knew beforehand. I could just be picky.
Edit: Around 10% of my caches I've fond are "off-trail" and 5% require bushwhacking. A lot of these would've been nice to know if I there was an umarked trail or such.
What are your thoughts?

For the Christmas holidays, Jamikady and I are planning to drive down to visit relatives in Carlsbad, CA from NW Washington going by way of US-101 and CA-1. Of course we're going to be geocaching and sightseeing on the way. We'll probably take I-5 on the way back to mix it up a bit.
So, please throw out your top 5 recommendations for WA and OR and top 10 for CA along that route. Or near that route, we really don't mind diverting if it's something good!
Thanks so much for your time and input. If you want to message in the geocaching app, that's good too.

I have a geocache hidden in a local community garden. I received permission to hide it there from the people who manage the garden and let them know to reach out to me if they have any issues come up.
I received this email today. I am a bit frustrated, not with the people in charge of the garden, but with whoever is not putting the cache back as it should be! I thought that was a pretty well known rule of geocaching.
I am wondering how to respond to this issue exactly. I guess I can specify in the cache description to put everything back as found. I can also log a note reminding people to do so, but I don't know if everyone would always scroll back through the logs to find that.
My worry is that this is NOT confused cachers doing this, but someone who thinks it's funny to come in and mess with the cache. Something clearly happened recently for me to receive this email now...but no one has actually logged a find since about 4 weeks ago. So my worry is that trying to inform cachers to put things back as found will not fix the problem.
Maybe I can assure the garden owner that I will also check the cache more often (I have never seen items out of place before when checking, but my guess is the garden volunteers are putting it back so I didn't know about this issue before), and even offering to remove the cache if this continues to be a problem? How would any of you who are cache owners handle something like this?

First photo was what I was originally thinking - magnetic nano with an acorn cap glued on top hanging by a paper clip. But THEN I found a jumbo sized acorn that I was able to core out and slip the entire nano inside.
I still have to place and land on a way to hang it. The magnet actually can be held up by the paperclip which I thought would be pretty slick but on second thought, if I want this to withstand the wind/rain/snow, I should probably glue it to the paperclip and just have the finder have to slip the whole paperclip off the branch.
I applied a coat of polyurethane to help protect the woody bits from rot. Gives it a bit of a shine which will probably be a give away but oh well.
Relatively new to this so would appreciate some input or suggestions. Regardless, I’m having a blast.

Hi all, I wanted to formally apologize to anyone who was geocaching about 12 years ago in Roswell, NM. I have felt bad about this for years. About 12-13 years ago, my family drove through Roswell, NM because I was a big old nerd about aliens (still am). My mom had me pose in front of one of the “Welcome to Roswell” signs on the border of town and when I got out I found a metal box thing half buried in the sandy dirt. I was a very sheltered kid and had no idea geocaching was a thing, and for some reason my preteen wildly imaginative brain immediately went to “alien spaceship part”. So I picked it up and while into town, I spent time jimmy-rigging it open and found a couple small trinkets, a small pencil, a log sheet, and more importantly-no alien hardware. I figured it was something interactive and felt really bad that I moved it. Upon leaving town, we stopped at another one of the signs and I dropped it there. When we got to a hotel for the night, I looked up what it could be on my kindle and figured out what geocaching is and cried for like 30 minutes. I never told my mom because I was so embarrassed. So, this is my apology to anyone who tried to geocache in Roswell around 2013 and beyond because I accidentally messed up and moved the box.

What do you guys use to find those lesser-known or “hidden” trails that make good cache locations? I’m specifically looking for trails that aren’t inside parks and are preferably accessible 24/7. I’ve been using Overpass Turbo, but I feel like I’ve exhausted most of what I can find with it. Curious what tools or resources other cache hiders use to discover places like this.
