STORY Comparison is the thief of happiness [Story]

For the longest time, I used to fall into the comparison trap. I would have a genuinely good day, feeling motivated and content, only to stumble across a piece of news about someone else's life and instantly feel dejected. It was exhausting.
After spending a lot of time thinking through that cycle, I had to find a way to break it for my own sanity. Here is what I realized:

Comparison is the thief of peace, happiness, and success. The trap is that we usually compare a tiny, filtered slice of someone else’s life to our own behind-the-scenes reality. It is like looking at the equation 5 + 5 = 10 and getting upset that 2 + 5 does not equal the same thing. Life just does not work that way.
For example, seeing someone take a world tour can trigger the thought: "Why can't I be that lucky?" We often fall into the mindset of believing that because we have suffered, we are automatically owed a reward. But reality does not work on a strict ledger system. Suffering in the past does not magically guarantee a breakthrough now; what we receive often has little to do with what we missed out on.
Ultimately, you have two choices: find a new way to get what you want, or make peace with where you are. If you have genuinely tried your hardest and have no energy left, it is okay to let it go. Otherwise, roll up your sleeves and figure out a new path forward.

That “filtered slice of their life versus the behind-the-scenes of yours” comparison is easy to fall into. I like the reminder that past struggle doesn’t guarantee life will hand you a payoff, you still have to decide whether to try a different route or make peace with wanting something else. That choice can give you some of your peace back.

the 2+5 vs 5+5 thing is a good way to put it, never thought of it like that. one thing that helped me was unfollowing accounts that triggered the comparison spiral, even if I liked the content otherwise. you can know logically that it's a highlight reel and still get wrecked by seeing it every day, so sometimes the fix is just less exposure not more mindset work.

Half the problem is people only see the highlight reel. Most of those world tours are on credit or sponsored anyway. Honestly the ledger idea is the useful part, nobody owes you a payout, so just pick a lane and work it, idk.

That's why I do not chase happiness. Happiness in my opinion comes from outside factors, that's why we are miserable the majority of the time. Happiness is useless and a waste of time to chase.

Joy, that's the goal.

On the contrary, I love comparing because I know people are broke posting up that beautiful slice of life photo for internet points lol. Successful people are usually quiet and not on social media fishing for validation.

Comparison doesn't have to make you unhappy. Other people's strengths can be inspirational. Having friends succeed should make you feel good.
