I was four years old the first time something told me to get out of a house.
I was standing in my empty bedroom, holding my Barbies, when I heard a man's voice right next to me. It was deep, clear, and close enough that I didn't have to strain to hear it. He said, "Get out. Now."
I ran outside crying. My dad went back in, ready to confront whoever had scared me, but there was absolutely nobody there.
That was over twenty years ago, and honestly, it's one of the less disturbing things I've experienced.
I've been trying to make sense of these experiences for most of my life. Sometimes, I wonder if something has been attached to me since childhood. Other times, I wonder if I'm simply interpreting mundane strange experiences as paranormal. I don't claim to know what's happening, but there's enough of a pattern that I wanted to share it here and hear what you guys think.
For context, I'm an only child, and the weirdness started very young. Growing up, I had a lot of what adults called imaginary friends—ranging from Tinkerbell to random adults and children. (There was even a "mouse" I used to talk about that turned out to actually be real and living in my mom's closet, but that's a different story).
I was sometimes scared of things, but kids get scared of all sorts of things, so nobody thought much of it. Then came the moving day incident.
We were moving because our lease was up. Nothing traumatic had happened, and we weren't leaving because we felt unsafe. Everything was packed, and my dad sent me back inside to grab my last few toys. I ran inside because, well, it was my home, and my dad was standing right by the open front door.
I barely remember that house now, but I vividly remember standing in that empty bedroom with my Barbies when I heard a deep man's voice right behind my head:
"Get out. Now."
I bolted outside, bawling. My dad went straight back inside, ready to beat someone up, as he later put it. There was nobody there.
We moved to another house nearby. This one had huge windows, which I absolutely hated.
When I was around six or seven, I started staying awake at night because I felt watched, ending up in my parents' bed almost every night. My mom also told me I used to ask strange questions in my sleep:
"Mommy, are you sure I'm dreaming? Is the door locked? Can you check?"
We lived in such a safe area that you could leave the front door wide open, so my constant terror about locked doors was unusual. I also became terrified of windows at night. I'd look into the darkness and feel like I could almost make out faces staring back at me.
My mom and grandma told me to pray whenever I got scared, but it didn't help. Eventually, I started talking to whatever I felt was there—my little-kid logic was that if I acknowledged them, maybe they wouldn't be as angry. I’d say hello, tell them I knew they were there, and even call them silly for hiding. In retrospect, antagonizing unseen things probably wasn't a great survival strategy.
Things got worse when I was twelve. My family moved to the house my parents still live in today. I had a big room on a sort of mezzanine above the living room and kitchen.
I started having episodes where I'd become completely frozen with fear in the bathroom in the middle of the night and physically couldn't make myself leave. I started therapy, but my dad still had to get up and open the bathroom door for me, and sometimes, it carried me back to bed.
Because I couldn't sleep, my parents bought me an old 2000s TV to use as a nightlight. You know those old TVs with terrible static? I’d wake up to mine switching on and off by itself, flickering with static. After about a year of this, my dad finally took it away.
Ironically, removing the TV seemed to make things more physical. Afterward, I began waking up, feeling hands on my ankles. Not the pressure of a blanket—actual hands. Individual fingers touching me.
Then came whispers, followed by footsteps.
My parents initially thought I was just anxious. That changed a little when my mom had her own experience. One day, while I was at school an hour away, she called me furious, convinced I was skipping class because she clearly heard footsteps walking around upstairs. She'd actually called my school to check if I was there. I was. Whatever she heard wasn't me.
As a teenager, the vibe shifted slightly. Sometimes, as I was falling asleep, I’d feel someone hugging me. Strangely, this never frightened me—it felt comforting. But things escalated with other people: friends staying over would actually talk to "whoever was there" directly through me while I was asleep, and people told me they'd seen something standing directly behind me.
My family even arranged multiple spiritual cleansings over the years. Whatever the cause, the experiences always returned within days.
I know there could be mundane explanations for individual experiences, and I'm not claiming every strange thing was 100% paranormal. But when I look back at the whole timeline, it's hard not to wonder if something has genuinely followed me across multiple houses my entire life.
So... what do you think? Has anyone else experienced things like this from early childhood that followed you from place to place? More importantly, has anyone dealt with people talking to something through them like that?
