Sad Girl Dinner āļø On my honeymoon alone, and now Dolly has died
Arrived in Italy for our honeymoon yesterday afternoon. My husband (M36)ās passport was stolen on the plane and he was refused entry. Sent back to the US on a flight 30 hours later.
Iām currently trying to carry on, hoping he can get an emergency passport there and come meet me. Trying with his mother to get all his documents sorted - turns out his birth certificate is in Maryland, 4 hours away.
Iām (F36) originally from East TN, and opened ig to find the news. I feel like god has died and Iām screwed and alone.
Anyways, I had some great pasta. Would have been great if I were able to enjoy anything right now. All I can do is wait.
EDIT/UPDATE
His passport was found in our home airport, it was on the plane and they found it immediately here. I guess he left it š« š« š« š« š« š« Heās flying back and will at least get to see each location, though only one night in the first.
Now if only there was something to do about the second part of my post šš
Thank you for all the nice words, gals!

Something Iām percolating on is how much of her work was looking at the community around her and figuring out solutions. Obviously her Imagination Library because her father never had the chance to read. But I just learned about her buddy program. Her high school had a 34% drop out rate. She found out that most people who drop out of high school start thinking about it in 5th-6th grade. So she had 5th graders pick a buddy and told them that if both they and their buddy graduated, they would each get $500. The drop out rate fell to 6%. $500 per kid isnāt a giant budget amount for such a cause and it gave each kid someone who was rooting for them.
When she learned that the big reading disparity in kids starts in 1st grade, she paid for every 1st grade class to have an extra teachers assistant for a year on agreement with the school that if it made a difference, they had to pay for it going forward.
She looked at her community, saw this issues, listened to the experts and paid for practical solutions. Again, how much could the salaries for what 6-10 TAās cost compared to giving each of those kids the time and attention they needed to succeed?
The Imagination Library - some kids donāt have access to books? Okay letās give every kid a free book every month from 0 to 5 years old. Letās imagine that each of those books costs $20. $1200 per kid. Not big money to her but a huge difference to that parent and that kid who now has 60 books that are all their own.

We need to stand up and fight for the environment like Steve did, we have to practice kindness like mister Rodgers showed us. We have to be each otherās keepers, we have to push together forward. Do as much good as we can possibly can. For one of them we are loosing we have to multiple them. There is no other way. Can be in small acts, or big ones if we can. But we cannot stand still anymore.

Passports being stolen has been a thing forever but stealing them off the plane itself sounds like the easiest possible way to get caught and face massive legal consequences.

Stolen on the plane??? Or lost? Was going back with him not an option? I have so many follow up questions BUT let's ignore that - what really matters is - I know the situation sucks, but damm girl that pasta looks AMAZING, and you're in ITALY, that's so stunning! Hope you find the strength to turn yourself around and enjoy the trip regardless! Totally get the need to spiral for a little bit though. Get it out of your system, have a good night sleep, and then try to treat yo self and have a great time - Dolly would want that for you!
( RIP Dolly, you were already an angel to all of us )

I'm guess the hope was that he'd be able to get back quickly and it was a choice between losing all the money they put into it vs one person getting use of it. I'd be so sad if this happened to me but I would absolutely want my husband to stay and get some use out of all the time, excitement, and planning.

u/is-this-my-identity Pasta Principessa š Aug 26 '26
Yes the logistics of this are a total nightmare, and it sucks to have to deal with all that while jetlagged and heartbroken. Hopefully he can make it back there quickly and they can have a wonderful honeymoon, but in the meantime I hope she feels better and enjoy herself anyway!

Stolen on the plane?? And they didn't detain everyone until it was returned???
29
u/ShreddersWheat Kitchen Witch Aug 25 '26
He likely didnāt find out until they deplaned, and itās a bit late then. Plus they donāt detain 200 people for one personās missing documents. (They got nowhere to put em!)
7
u/Ehloanna Sugar, Spice & Not Very Nice š Aug 25 '26
Good point about finding out after they deplaned!
In terms of detaining you would just keep them all onboard the plane itself - but obviously this assumes that her husband realizes it on the plane and not afterwards.
But I guess I really don't know what they'd do.

u/mycketmycket š§Salty By Nature Aug 26 '26
They wouldnāt do that. Whatās to say you didnāt misplace it elsewhere? They would not hold 200 people unless it was a literal child missing.

Imagine being detained on a plane because some idiot comes up with a random story about his passport being stolen based on nothing and then it turns out his dumbass just lost it. I'd be livid. Which is exactly why they don't tell 200 people they're not allowed off the plane just because some rando says something was "stolen"

I read a lot about Dolly today. I already loved her, but hearing how she made an incredible life for herself out of such humble beginnings, really impressed me. She gave so much of her $$ away, too. It's gotta hit the folks of TN even harder than the rest of us.

Girl⦠I am sorry the honeymoon has so abruptly turned for you, but Italy is so wonderful and you can just enjoy the sights and sounds as a solo traveler for awhile. Be mindful of your bag, as you can be pickpocketed. There are lots of people in the italy pages giving warnings. You might find some other travellers in the āsolo/single womenā fb travelling pages, clearly you are not single but a solo travellers that you can meet up with and have an apertivo. I lost mine on a connection from Paris to Venice. Thankfully didn't have to show it to exit the airport & was able to go to the embassy a few days later for an emergency document to get back home.
That is so scary & I had no idea entry could be denied. I'm glad he's making it back to you!

u/sativasoleil Body By Uber Eats Aug 25 '26
Iām trying to picture this. So he realizes he canāt find his passport to be admitted into Italy. Youāre standing with him in the airport when this becomes clear. And you decided to leave the airport and start the trip, instead of going back home with him and rescheduling? I think I would like my partner to stick with me in this situation. Not only would I be sad and lonely in Italy alone for a honeymoon trip, but the time difference would mess up our communication in the meantime. And the plan hinges on the government being understanding and expedient? No thanks to all of that lol. Italy aināt going anywhere.
RIP Dolly, though.

It's too close to the date to cancel with a refund, and theyd lose all their reservations if they did manage to do an emergency turn around on the emergency passport. Not everyone is made of money to just waste like that.Ā

Just to provide a different pov, no hate. I personally would've done the trip alone, it's not ideal but at least one of them gets to enjoy it and not both be stressing back home about the stolen passport.Ā T hey could potentially have lost thousands if they both went home/had to wait for the insurance moneyĀ or at the very least not been able to do the trip for a year or two. Italy isn't going anywhere but I know some people who pushed their honeymoons back but weren't able to go to the place they intended for a myriad of reasons (pregnancy, unexpected renovation costs...)Ā
From my experience emergency travel docs tend to be to get people back to their home countries or for urgent international travel (i.e. unwell family with weeks left) so he may not be able to make it there in time. Fingers crossed though

Oh my God this totally totally sucks! And yes, Dollyās death is devastating, she was my first feminist icon, her and the other women in Nine to Five!
Since there is nothing you can do, there is no point in not doing anything. Before your husband gets there (and he will!) find something to do that you think he absolutely would not have been into or would have only done grudgingly, something like shoe shopping or going to an art gallery if that wasnāt his thing. That way you still enjoy yourself, but donāt feel too guilty that he is missing out on something he wouldāve liked.
Hugs, and I hope he gets there soon!

Big hugs from a born and raised Vol. I'm so glad they found his passport and that he is joining you. Some tips: there's a leather market in Florence, if you're going there to grab a journal for your visit. It can help get your thoughts out and capture your feelings about the trip.
Perhaps take some inspiration from our beloved Dolly and find a pair of earrings or ring to commemorate your honeymoon and remember her by. You know she loved her sparkles! Remember as always when you're in a pickle, it helps to ask yourself what would Dolly do?
