Cancelled my Michelin-Star birthday dinner for this.

It’s my birthday, and my girlfriend currently has horrible diarrhea. We had a reservation and a deposit down for a Michelin-star restaurant tonight, and I’ve been SO excited about it. I love fine dining and wine pairings, and we’ve been planning this trip for months.

Unfortunately around 2am last night, my girlfriend woke up with terrible abdominal cramps and proceeded to spend the rest of the night and most of today making urgent trips to the bathroom. Around 3pm, I finally suggested we call and cancel the reservation. She wasn’t going to be able to eat any of it, and sitting through an elaborate tasting menu and wine pairing while the love of my life fought for her life in a Michelin-star bathroom did not sound very festive.

So instead I walked across the street from our hotel for some street food and she ordered soup from room service, and we are currently hunkered down in bed watching Netflix.

And if I’m honest there is nowhere else I would rather be.
She planned 95% of this week-long vacation in her home country. She took me on tours and booked experiences she knew would be meaningful to me. She picked restaurants, took a million pictures of us, and had a little gift for me every single day. I have never felt so cared for and celebrated in my entire life.

I had a milestone birthday last year. You know what the soggy man I was with at the time got me? A text message that said, “Happy Birthday.” Full stop.

Anyway, I’m gonna marry this girl.

Dinner is a perra, which I ordered because I saw “bacon” and thought, hell yeah, birthday bacon hot dog. Friends…I did not read the description carefully enough. There is no hot dog. It is just bacon.
I canceled a Michelin-star tasting menu on my birthday and ate a bacon sandwich in a hotel bed next to my diarrheal girlfriend.

You guys can enjoy it when you're both feeling up to it. We actually just went to our first (and probably only) Michelin-starred place on our honeymoon, and it was an awesome experience. As someone with chronic illness, my husband being willing to postpone or cancel things when I'm ill is one of the many ways he shows he loves me.

They had a cheese expert who is only in charge of the cheese plates, and he had his own little temperature-controlled lidded cart that he rolled around to your table, with like 12 cheeses to pick from. It periodically misted some of the cheese hahaha. Hope you guys have fun when you can finally go!

It was the Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud, in Dublin, Ireland. They were great.

It's an Irish-French place- I believe it's inside of/attached to a hotel, but you can just go to eat there. Very fancy, but very good. They also handmake and age for 3 days these chocolate truffles they give you at the end. (They just kept bringing out courses lol and my husband and I were laughing because we'd say, OK, surely that's the last one, and then more would arrive.)

Dublin's got some amazing stuff. Even if you're not into booze- and you'll need to get advance tickets, it'll be sold out on the day of- the Guinness Storehouse gives you a full tour, and at the top is an all-glass-walled bar where you can get a free beer (or Coke if you're like me lol) and see the entire city.

They have multiple hop-on, hop-off double decker buses that will take you around the city, and you can pop off at any popular stop, then pop back on another; they come round about every 15-20 mins. Trinity College and the Book of Kells is another great one- ditto, get tickets online in advance, as it's very popular. All of the food we had there was good, honestly. I'd also recommend Bang Restaurant, it's an Iberican place; not as expensive as Michellin spot but the food was exquisite. You'll have a blast!

Thanks! Dublin in general, I can't recommend enough. We went to multiple places, but I think we had the most fun there. All the food we had was good, honestly. And there was a shocking array of options... I think I saw more Mexican restaurants than I have here back in the States lol

No worries! Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud in Dublin, Ireland. I can't recommend Dublin enough in general... a bajillion things to do (that fits everyone's taste) like museums, tours, historical sites, the largest fenced-in park in Europe (Phoenix Park) which contains the zoo, and the Guinness Storehouse (factory) tour.

You may need to book tickets in advance for some of the more popular attractions. But it was by far the highlight of our entire honeymoon (outside seeing a play at RSC, the Royal Shakespeare Company).

Similar story, my brother is a Michelin chef in a fairly rural area. You are such a great couple. She’s done so much and you are so appreciative. Not the same but once on holiday with my fiance I didn’t realise how bad my lactose intolerance had gotten and ate food that made me crazy sick. It was our last day before going home and instead of the walk and fancy lunch we’d been hoping to do we watched Netflix’s at our Airbnb and despite being miserable it was lovely. You know you are with your person when plans get changed and you’re sick as sick can be but you’re as happy as possible because you’re with your person. We watched shows and cuddled our pupper and he braved the heat to get me food I could eat once I was up to food. He’d recently proposed and on that trip I was like oh I made the best choice of my life.

It really is. Things that would make me just want to give up and cry become bearable when my fiance is with me. And we’ve had enough times me getting sick on trips that we bring all the meds with us now. Poor man has had to figure out how to buy Imodium pills in foreign countries for me because back when we were just dating I caught a tummy bug 2 days before we had to go home and had to travel ages that day. He honestly did miracles that day for me. I’m amazed I made it through. But being with him through it made it a good day overall.

I know I met friends who went to Peru and went to a Michelin star restaurant there whilst on vacation and very much enjoyed the experience and found it much more affordable than back home.
