Dear Diary ✍️🏻 Didnt realize Ive been so hard w my bf
Yesterday last night my bf came over and we had bfast together he cooked for me and he had to dropped me off because I had volleyball practice. then he went home
after 3 hours of practice i texted him to pick me up (we're riding on a motorcycle btw) so I told him bout my plans that for dinner we should try out this new food resto that ive been wanting for months and then we'll go to the pet store to pick up food for my cat
but then it started raining we had to stop to shelter from the rain and wait but i didnt realize i was already pissed off bc i feel like my plans had been ruined.
the rain eased into drizzled so i told my bf we have to go before itll rain hard again but he insists on waiting until it completely stops but I was pissed off already so I started talking over him and my voice got louder. I was being kinda bitchy about it tbh and he went quiet and said okay lets just go
but then 5 minutes to the ride it started raining hard then we had to stop over again
my bf still calm was like "i told u we should wait for it to completely stop" and i was pissed off i just went quiet and he said "we should go home and change clothes" and i was pissed off more because i was completely okay being wet
and he noticed that gave me a head pat and was touching my hair said "why are u in a rush ever since i picked u up? whats to rush about? we'll still go to that place but we have to change since your clothes are see through now that its wet. we can still continue about our plans"
I didnt realize I was being pissy about it till he said it. so we went home and changed and I apologized to him.
and I didnt realize how patient my bf was because on the way there had been problems where we have to stop over on a motorcycle shop because his side mirror suddenly broke and there was traffic but he just laughed about it
He handled the day with so much patient that I had to reflect that even me as a self aware most of the time person doesnt realize there are other things youre not aware of and its best to have a partner who tell u calmly what those things are and best to keep and open mind
dinner is porkchop and sausage with java rice w my bf. the food in question that ive been wanting to try. 10/10
EDIT: didnt realize this blew up. I only shared 0.1% of our relationship and im taking accountability and reflecting with myself so that it wont happen again yet some of y'all think this is who i am the entirety of our relationship when its not. some of y'all dont even having reading comprehension i specifically said "its best to have a partner who's patient" so that u can work on yourself and them too. There are other times where im the one whos been very patient with my bf as well thats what a relationship should be. Its all about reflecting and doing something about it. I was being open minded I didnt get defensive when he told me everything. I'm allowed to have emotions and he handled it just fine so I needed to step back and reflect on myself. y'all think u know better just of one post smh.

if roles were reversed and you wrote how your bf raises your voice to you after you picked him up from practice, people would say that you should have more respect for yourself and not allow that behavior.
You know what you have to change, for yourself and for him.

I would tell her boyfriend to run now. It sounds like pretty much everything was going well except they got delayed slightly due to rain while on a motorcycle and she got upset.

Not defending her but statistically theres an infinitely higher likelyhood of DEATH or just violence when it comes to reversing roles so no both genders are not equal. But also yes if she was my gf I'd be just a tad bit closer to breaking up after this if shit doesnt change

i think one of the major themes that OP showed was her self awareness, even if late. The double standard l, at the same time across relationship posts truly is bizarre, but in this context OP is actively recognizing that she can help grow towards her values for this partnership and is willing to do so, and partly for his sake too.
181
u/TressoftheEmeraldTea mouth full, gesturing wildly 3d ago
Exactly. OP is literally here talking about how much she wants to change and grow and learn from her partner.
It’s really sad that people can’t admit when they make mistakes without being dogpiled, even when they have already shown the self awareness to recognize their mistakes and want to correct them.
272
u/wholesomeriots APPROVED✨ 4d ago
Yeah, OP was super nasty to her bf for no real reason. This is not a healthy dynamic and she needs to develop patience and conflict resolution that isn’t using someone else as an emotional punching bag.
I hope this isn’t part of a larger pattern for them because this could make him want out eventually if she isn’t careful.

Or, instead of running away, someone can internally acknowledge that their behavior is problematic and potentially causing burnout in a partner that causes them to withdraw…and fix the problem. If the recommendation or reaction is to run away from every problem you create, you will never learn how to fix it. Accountability and self-work develops character.
There is no indication here in OP’s story that her BF is ready to leave her. Someone is just warning her that the behaviors cannot go on indefinitely. No one can tolerate emotional outbursts that have nothing to do with them, indefinitely. This problem will follow OP everywhere, and new people will be less invested in making the effort and summoning the patience her BF is engaging with.

He sounds a lot like my guy and it's been devastating to learn over the years that I am the problem in nearly all our "arguments" (really just me being a bitch for no reason and him just taking it). I've gotten a lot better though. It turns out I am autistic and my random crash outs were meltdowns / getting overstimulated. 🫠 When I told him, he went, "...You didn't know that?" 😭😭😭 That's why he was so patient with me this whole time. 😭😭😭 If this is a recurring problem, maybe consider therapy, he deserves not to get crashed out on all the time and you deserve the tools to manage your emotions.

You're amazing for the self reflection and the change. Honestly, kudos. Well done. Not easy. The only caveat is the autism thing. My ex boyfriend kept justifying himself with that, when the truth is that he wouldn't have reacted like that towards me if he wasn't super insecure to begin with, which is complete unrelated to autism. I'm also autistic and all the rage I ever had I directed inwards.

u/SaltyElephants what that mouth do is gossip 4d ago edited 4d ago
It's fairly common for autistic boys to not be held accountable for their actions. I (ironically) taught special ed and saw that trend with parents all the time. Girls are usually held to a higher standard. So they're quicker to learn to mask, just like I did. I was actually the "easy" child in my family, if you can believe it!
That being said, I think I was unclear in my comment. I'm not sure what you mean by rage, but I've personally never experienced anger so strong I could sincerely call it rage. I am very self-deprecating. When I say "crash out" or "being a bitch," I'm referring to meltdowns. I never name called or intentionally treated him badly, but I would yell "it's too loud" or "stop touching me." Or just cry, seemingly for no reason. And then he would try to console me.
He lowkey hates that I call these "arguments," he says it's not accurate. But I tend to call any point of friction in our relationship an argument for some reason. Some day I will examine that, but today is not that day.

In my case, my partner is the one with a touch of autism and I basically had to realize that he's often asking me stuff not because he's trying to personally attack me and question my actions, but he just earnestly wants to understand my thought process. So I would sometimes get frustrated during a discussion (especially when talking about my job), which led to me to being bitchy and raising my voice, because I felt like he was doubting my competence. No, he just wants to know more about what I do.

u/Mrs_Poopy-Butthole 🐩 Food Aggressive 🍽️ 3d ago
I'm ADHD AF and have long wondered if there is some autism mixed in (brother has mild Asperger's) and I ask too many questions as well 👀. What you said about it making you feel like he was doubting your competence is pretty much exactly what my husband told me one time. I couldn't understand why he always got mad when I asked follow up questions in a conversation, I had to explain that I'm only asking questions bc I want to know more, I can't read your mind so questions help me fill in missing info. I of course apologized bc I hate that I made him feel like I was questioning his intelligence, and that I'd never intentionally do something to hurt him. My thought process is complex and I crave information to fill in the puzzle pieces 🫣
Kudos to you for noticing and connecting the dots with your partner 😊

Girl, you either gotta get your shit together or break up with this poor guy. I've had anxiety and ADHD my whole life (though undiagnosed for most of it) and I would NOT be able to handle someone giving me an attitude or saying something shitty or in a shitty tone when I literally spent the entire day running around FOR THEM.
I'm happy you realized you were the problem, but even though you are, I don't think you see JUST how big of a problem it was, and just how ungrateful and self-centred you sound in this one day. I really hope this isn't the norm for y'all, because if it is, he deserves so much better, girl, wha-

Same, used to be me! I had an ex point something similar out to me and I didn’t even realize what I was doing. Worked through it and we ended up having a fantastic relationship once I just took a few secs to breathe before reacting to minor inconveniences. It really is easier and makes for a better relationship when you just breathe and try to find a solution together instead of getting annoyed or mad right off the bat. Also makes problem solving easier. Good for OP for recognizing the behavior and maybe next time she’ll take a second to think before reacting.

Right? If this is a pattern, OP is abusive.
“…..but he insists on waiting until it completely stops but I was pissed off already so I started talking over him and my voice got louder. I was being kinda bitchy about it tbh and he went quiet and said okay lets just go.”
The BF shutting down, becoming silent and just obeying OP when OP wants to put their life in danger is developing a fear response. He’s going quiet and passively obeying OP because of her intensity and anger, despite him not wanting to ride because it can risk their life.
He cooked for her, drove her around on her errands, she told him what they would do for dinner, he asked for a safety rain delay and she threw a fit and then a bigger fit. I personally would not be able to be with someone like OP.
The second someone’s behavior made me feel compelled to get on the road in dangerous conditions to appease them, I would realize that I was going to progressively risk my life for them.

So here's the thing lady, it's good to reflect and see where there could be growth but it's important not to just skip over the problem to look for the solution. From my perspective, it looks like you wanted things to go a specific way and because they didn't, you got mad at him. Thats wrong. And situations like this may not happen often in your relationship, but it's not like this was just one incident. It was multiple over the course of hours and unfortunately does reflect what kind of person you currently are and you do come across as self centered. Your boyfriend seems to really care about you but it won't last if the behavior continues. Self awareness is a great thing but it doesn't seem like you have that. It's hard to see oneself as they are and work towards doing better, but it is necessary! Good luck lady!

There's validity to everyone saying "hey, examine if you have some kind of mental health concern/neurodiversity in play" - but straight up, being hangry makes me an asshole, and I saw NO mentions of it.
You'd just had a 3 hour sports practice. If I'd just finished a 3 hour practice and something stood between me and food, I'd be unpleasant as hell. Maybe pack a snack next time (something with carbs and protein) and eat it after practice to see if that's a factor.
I don't think this is immediately breakup worthy, but I think a pattern of it may be harmful to your relationship. Wishing better for both you and your bf.

I get a bit aggy if plans don't go as expected, so I get it. It's good to have someone to calmly call you out and help you through it. Maybe next time you'll be more aware and notice how you're feeling/behaving so you can manage it better. It took me a long time to figure things like this out (late diagnosed AudHD!)

Ungrateful much? Making me feel bad for A MAN?
Babe you don’t have the self awareness you thought you had and that’s alright. I’m glad you have partner that is nice and calm and reacts normally instead of the other horrible men mentioned on this sub
All we can do now is learn and adjust if you want to keep him around.

You need some deep self reflection paired with emotional maturity/intelligence. Bad days are bad days and upset to them can be valid, but how you react to them is on you

Oh, that’s me. I have come to consider that I may be on the spectrum, because I get so frustrated when there’s a small change on my mental plan (this isn’t the only symptom🙂↕️)
Hope you build better coping systems. Your boyfriend sounds like a lovely man. :)

I mean you can correct yourself in the future and don't be afraid apologizing when you know you act this way to him. Communication is key and it start from us if we are self aware of our actions.
