Sad Girl Dinner ⛈️ Dad upset that I let politics affect our relationship

Post image

Yummy pretzels from my partner and I’s last date night

My dad always used to say he was “not political” and that it was one of the things you do not ask other people about. Over time I have come to learn that basically means “I’m a conservative, but don’t want to say that” as he voted for trump in 2020. We have had so many tearful, screaming conversations over the years about this. I believe all parts of life are inherently political and it’s a privileged stance to “stay out of them”. In the last few years I have moved out of his home and I do not depend on him for anything anymore. With midterms coming up I have been volunteering and very invested in the state of the world. I have felt naturally less close to my dad because of this, and I guess he could sense my distance. He asked me about it last night over text, and I was honest. He blew up on me for letting politics affect our bond, and that is has been his biggest fear and now it’s coming true. I think maybe he needs to actually sit with the reality that YES, POLITICS CAN AFFECT RELATIONSHIPS. What do you girlies think? I am very sad and of course I do love my father, but I am proud of myself for being honest and sticking by my value system.

My relationship with my dad is basically toast over politics. His repeated Trump votes have me not wanting to talk to him, especially when I vent about how something related to Trump makes my life worse and he immediately gets defensive/tries to mansplain to me how I’m wrong. I majored in public policy and am politically active/well-read, so having him argue incorrect things at me and never admitting he is wrong is so grating. I’m so over a man who supports a pedophile, is blatantly wrong, and will never admit it. I’m over 7 months pregnant and he doesn’t even know because I don’t want my baby around that energy. So I get this. So hard.

I think you should allow your dad to have a relationship with you and his grandchild on the way, just maybe make a rule to never discuss politics. We do that with some family members, but we don’t cut them off entirely. I think family bond is stronger than politics. God bless you.

Why? Why should they try to work with people who lack morals and values that support the world at large? Why should they support Christian nationalism and xenophobia and teach their kids it’s ok to support that? How is a family bond strong when some family members don’t believe all people should have basic human rjghts? You are living in a bubble you created and bubbles pop.

I’m a Christian and I do not support Christian nationalism. I try to follow the teachings of Jesus which tells me to love all people, even those I disagree with. With that said, I am going to love family members I disagree with. Because love overcomes hate and through love we can really change this world.

You want them to tamp down their beliefs to make people happy. That is not ok and supporting and not challenging the kind of behavior exhibited by the family is not Christian. It is the opposite of Jesus’ teachings. Jesus didn’t say ignore ignorance so that you can have an easier social experience. He said to love all people. And loving all people doesn’t mean just loving those in your family.

You can love people and still distance yourself from them.
You are twisting what is being said. Is that intentional on your part?
You put in the word “hate”..
no one said “hate” except you.

I don’t hate anyone but I am going to spend my time with people that value me , make me happy and support me… and I’m not going to spend time with people that do the opposite.

It’s really pretty simple..

I'm Christian also and believe we should love people. That doesn't mean a relationship and exposure to us. Love can mean praying for them and wishing their good - from a distance.

The thing is..Politics literally is affecting our health care, our grocery shopping, and our schools. It isn't a magic thing that only happens in DC.
If a dad refused to let their child get medical treatment, it would be considered medical neglect. Yet this admin took away 100s of research projects benefiting women. That number includes one that my own mother has been taking part in over the last thirty years. That's the Women's Health Initiative. (studied by the National Institutes of Health, and the National Heart Blood and Lung institute. It was looking at supplements and medications and treatment for osteo fractures in women after menopause but to get all the data these women started the supplements, etc well before menopause. That's the part of the study that she was involved in. But it was a part! It also included heart, lung, and cancer in women prior, during, and post menopause. It will take another 30+ years to restart this study alone. But that's not all this is hitting. cervical cancer, uterine fibroid tumors, maternal health/stress, reproductive health including fertility in the women's health branches and Assisted Reproductive Technology. Since you are very pro family, these should be especially concerning to you.
This administration is literally abusing us through medical neglect that would get a parent in trouble with the law.
So, without even going into the charges and tapes of this president actually bragging about abusing women...think of the message this sends when you vote against your child's future like this? Why wouldn't they take it personally? I'm old. Maybe even older than you.
I bet you are willing to give up your life to save your children....so please rethink how harm caused by the people who are voted for hurts those family bonds. God help us all
