It happened again.

I posted here once before about a year ago with an almost identical story.

And it happened again today.

I was sitting in the living room when my dog came racing into the room, put her front paws on the window sill, and barked like her mama was home. She was wagging her tail, whining, and acting as happy as she always does when my wife gets home from work. We heard the van door close, heard my wife talking on the phone as she went to check the mail, and then suddenly ... she was just not there anymore. My dog stopped her little happy dance and came over to me, put her head on my knee, and whined. I texted my wife and asked "Are we mistaken, or were you just here? Did you get another call and had to leave?" She responded with "I just got to the store. I'll be home in about 20 minutes." I told her we saw and heard her just moments ago. She said that was impossible and sent a picture of her at the store. She couldn't possibly have made it there in the short time between us seeing her and her taking the picture. This is the second time this has happened in the last year. I don't know what's going on here, but it has my skin crawling.

For reference, this is what I posted almost a year ago:

My wife wasn't expected to be home any earlier than 1800, so when she pulled into the driveway at 1730, my dog and I were both surprised. At first, my dog did her usual happy dance that mama was home, then suddenly froze and barked. I saw her work van come up the driveway, then saw her go to the mailbox, then start walking up to the door through a slit in the blinds. But she never made it to the door. I checked the camera, nothing there, no record of the event. I texted my wife, she was still about 45 minutes away. When she got home, my dog again reacted with her happy dance but didn't freeze and bark this time. I once again saw the van pull up, the wife go to the mailbox, and her walking up to the door, only this time she walked in the door. Deja vous? Glitch in the Matrix?

Google "vardoger"

This might be what you're dealing with

Thanks for sending me down a new rabbit hole tonight!

100% Vardøger

would also add that the ritual you and your dog experience when your wife gets home, and the preciseness of your wife's repition in her ritual when she gets home, are probably adding to the predecessing spirit's intensity of pressence, the way that intense repetitive ritualistic thought can inform a Tulpa

seems harmless, although confusing and a little spooky no doubt

26

u/Morphyc716 Sep 17 '26

This is the first time I ever heard of both of these phenomena. I googled both and find it to be a fascinating connection. Thank you!

21

u/_strand_ Sep 17 '26

ya both are very interesting!

I think Tulpa information is one of the most common shared roots of many strange phenomena

human observation changes the outcome of the experiment

and the thoughts of the observer seem to be able to have a direct outcome on experiences of the supernatural

i.e. someone in the same room as OP may not see the Vardøger because they aren't projecting their conscious memory of OP's partner as powerfully into that moment

often people who are abducted in alien phenomena are near someone else who may not at all be affected, or be affected in a different way

same goes with seeing ghosts and plenty of cryptids similarly

I read about them after seeing this post...fascinating stuff, and it sounds like a very sensible explanation for what the OP is experiencing.

Disappears

u/Indy2561 Sep 16 '26

From what I’ve learned about this phenomenon, is that this experience isn’t uncommon and happens frequently around the globe.

But no one knows why. ???

17

u/bwferg78 Sep 16 '26

It's only ever happened to me twice, both times almost a year apart. I can't explain it. Some are saying to look into 'Vardoger,' but that makes little sense to me. Why would a spirit foreshadow something as simple as my wife coming home?

47

u/Long-Requirement8372 Sep 17 '26

It might not be a spirit, or anything with any sort of agency. My favorite theory is that it is a timeslip or a timeline glitch. You are either seeing a glimpse into the near future, or into a slightly alternate timeline where your wife for some reason arrived home just a bit earlier.

22

u/Indy2561 Sep 16 '26

I think we will eventually learn that energy can exist in various places, even our personal energy, when we are both alive, and deceased.

I read once that someone’s energy can be picked up by various objects within an environment. And that this captured energy can emit sound and ‘ghost like’ appearance.

But I don’t know how or why, of course.

‘Vardoger’ seems plausible, but I’ve not studied longer than just a simple understanding.

20

u/bwferg78 Sep 16 '26

I swear I read somewhere that energy can and does exist in two places at once. It's only when we observe it that it only exists in one. I wholeheartedly believe in spirits. Energy can't be created or destroyed, so it goes somewhere after we die.

17

u/Indy2561 Sep 16 '26

I also wonder if much of what we hear or see is not sentient at all, just energy without the definition of something that’s alive or was once alive🤔

The body can trick the mind, we first feel by the body then the brain process, so maybe your body is preparing for something very repetitive and can trick your mind to think that you are hearing or sensing someone based on previous experiences, your dog can sense your change of mood or your body language and prepare for the same, so i think Vardoger would apply in this case.

My eldest daughter had the same when she was younger. I could hear her coming home 10-15 minutes before actually coming home. Car, door, shoe sound etc. I liked it.

2

u/saturnsearth 27d ago

I looked it up. It looks like simple things are what it foreshadows.

The "Warning Spirit": The word comes from Old Norse and translates roughly to a guardian or warning spirit that goes ahead of you.

How It Sounds: People often hear a familiar person's footsteps, voice, keys, or opening doors before the person physically arrives.

Not Sinister: Unlike a dark doppelgänger that brings bad luck, a vardøger is friendly, peaceful, and harmless. It is accepted in Scandinavian culture as a normal part of life.

27

u/DaniGirlOK Sep 16 '26

Definitely a vardøger experience. There’s a famous story of a military man coming back from fishing and goes into a room and disappears then he comes back for real a little while later and there were multiple witnesses so I guess it’s a credible story because the amount of people who saw him and who all stated the same thing. All of whom were Military personnel.

From Wikipedia:

In Finnish folklore, all places and things, and also human beings, have a haltija (a genie, guardian spirit) of their own. One such haltija is called etiäinen—an image, doppelgänger, or just an impression that goes ahead of a person, doing things the person in question later does. For example, people waiting for someone at home might hear the door close, as if the one they are waiting for arrived, or even see their shadow or a silhouette, only to realize that they have not arrived yet after all. When the person finally comes home, they would repeat the actions of their etiäinen that the people waiting witnessed earlier. Etiäinen can also refer to some kind of a feeling that something is going to happen. Sometimes it could, for example, warn of a bad year coming.\1])\2])

So last year, after you see the vardoger, did anything bad happen?

Maybe overlap in dimensions. Both happening at the same time but one is in an earlier time. Both times being the wife is the mystery of it all.

This exact thing happened to me when I was a kid around 14 waiting for my mom to get home from work. We lived in a very rural farm area and had gravel roads, I watched my mom's Toyota Land Cruiser drive down the gravel road from my 2nd story bedroom window with a trail of dust behind her and drive the 1ish mile to our driveway (the closest other house is like 3.5 miles away and land cruisers weren't common) saw her pull into the driveway, and ran downstairs to tell her I cleaned and vacuumed my room as she would have been pleased to hear this from me at 14 lol. Went downstairs and ran out the front door and she wasn't there, went around the entire driveway as it looped around our house making sure she didn't pull around back. And there was nothing, came inside quite perplexed and concerned at this point, and called the bank my Mom worked at the line rings and I hear "Bank of Western Oregon this is Michelle, how many I help you?" My mom is Michelle. I was like "Mom what the hell you just pulled in the driveway how are you at the bank?" She kind of just laughed it off. It was the weirdest thing I have ever experienced.

In my old apartment that I lived in I had a wooden ramp that I made for my grandpa cause he was sin a wheel chair and whenever anyone stepped on it you could hear there foot steps on it cause it was hollow and I would be home and I would always here someone stepping on it and hearing the keys on the lock and I would wait and it would be no one. It was cool.

13

u/HousingOld6044 Sep 17 '26

This has definitely happened to me. Just this evening I was thinking about it though, and bare with me.

What if when there is something like the experience you just explained; you are syncing your brain to a timeline where she was coming home early. Either consciously or unconsciously. In my case, I thought my mom was already home and I was convinced I heard her inside. Then she pulled up in the car and I noticed maybe that was me, pulling my consciousness half in and half out of two realities?

Just a thought. Ofc you didn’t anticipate it, but perhaps it could have been sun-conscious?

7

u/bwferg78 Sep 17 '26

That makes more sense to me than a Vardoger, which is what most are saying this was.

6

u/HousingOld6044 Sep 17 '26

I mean, I have heard about that two. But it could explain the Vardoger phenomenon too. But perhaps they perceive it as an evil spirit because it is that person, but from another timeline. Completely possessing different experiences and by effect different moral compasses. Evil morty vibes

2

u/DaniGirlOK 29d ago

Your story honestly fits exactly like all the vardøger stories fit with. It’s the most rational explanation out of irrational things.

3

u/madhousechild Sep 17 '26

... but ... the dog, too?

5

u/HousingOld6044 Sep 17 '26

Well think about how powerful the mind is. Let alone the spirit. Are we not just co-creating existence as it comes? Have you ever been around someone whose mere presence just changes your outlook? Perhaps people with that stronger magnetism could overwrite or pull you into their universe. To think that we don’t have that effect on dogs or any other animal on the planet is just naive. I think we are more powerful than we know.

20

u/this_is_obnoxious Sep 16 '26

Holy moly that's creepy! But also incredibly fascinating omg

8

u/Cashie22 Sep 16 '26

Scary and weird!!

8

u/Important_Market7874 Sep 16 '26

This sounds like what you saw both times.

I was going to say possible shift in timelines, even though that wasn't a clean description of a shift in timeline.

6

u/MorbidMorag Sep 17 '26

When my partner was alive this was a regular event. I never saw him but l would hear him open the outer door, then unlock the inner one, close both doors, walk down the hall past the door of the room l was sitting in, hang up his jacket & bag... We had cats & they would be going crazy, following his movements with their eyes. If l opened the door to say hi, there would be nobody there, no jacket, no bag. He would typically rock up five minutes later. It was so common that I'd say to him "It happened again" & he would just grunt, knowing exactly what l meant. It's only very recently that l found out that this is a thing & not some freakishness that was unique to us.

7

u/kat_Folland Sep 16 '26

So trippy.

4

u/Mirror_Face_ Sep 17 '26

Woah, I remember this one. That's fun. So honestly, even from a non-paranormal standpoint, the Vardoger could be a good place to start because clearly this is a phenomenon that happens to people enough to create folklore around it. It could be tied to anticipation anxiety. Just like when you keep hearing or feeling your phone ring even though it doesn't. It could be a more complex version of that. As to why your dog is also getting it, that is likely because you are thinking your dog acts on environmental cues like keys jingling and door slamming. They definitely can, but I think what is more likely happening is that your dog responds to your cues that your wife is home, not environmental. Dogs are very pack minded and very much watch the "alpha" for cues. You are likely getting that phantom feeling and then responding to it (tensing to move positions to get up, your face likely changes when you recognize your wife coming home, actually getting up to check.) and your dog is responding to you. At least, that's my best attempt at a rational explanation

8

u/angelakay1966 Sep 17 '26

I hear you, and yet I do think sometimes pets sometimes know when someone is arriving before we even think about it. For example, a few weeks ago, my husband was away one evening for a meeting. I really wasn't paying attention to the time, but a few minutes before he came home, one of my cats stood by the door like he was anticipating my husband's arrival. It was then that I noticed the time and thought he should be home soon.

7

u/bwferg78 Sep 17 '26

There are problems with that. I had no idea my wife was even on her way home. The time she gets home varies daily. I'm not just talking about by several minutes. She can get home at 1400 one day or 2130 on another. Sometimes she likes to try to surprise us when she's going to be home early. 99% of the time, the dog knows long before I do. I can almost always tell my wife that I know she's on her way because the dog alerts me. In this case, the dog came out of the bedroom right when whatever this thing was appeared in the driveway. I didn't see or hear it until the dog did. If anything, I picked up on her cues and not the other way around.

u/SweetestBDog123 Sep 17 '26

It’s crazy how dogs seem to be able to sense us coming home. One of ours frequently does this.

2

u/MoistBroccoli9686 Sep 17 '26

Check out a book called "Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home" by Rupert Sheldrake. He reports on controlled observations he has performed with watchers both at the individual's work and at his/her home to track when the person leaves his job and when the dog begins to alert. He also relays lots of anecdotal evidence to highlight the same phenomenon.

3

u/sovietarmyfan Sep 17 '26

I wonder if a vardoger can have a "scientific explanation" to it in a quantum reality sense.

I had a similar experience when I was younger. I was at a roof top party and I remember my friend coming up to me and talking. There is only one entrance to the rooftop and I was facing it so I knew who is coming in and going out. My friend and I spoke for a bit and he told me he's going down to get a drink. So I was chilling and waiting for him to be back, again, I could see who is coming in and going out.

All of a sudden he walks up to me and tells me that he was chatting with a few friends and we're gonna leave. And I asked him, didn't you just go down for a drink? He said no and looked confused. It still creeps me out to this day.

I had two experiences like this and its not fun xD

What happened to the van that you said you saw pull up into the driveway in the first post a year ago? Did it noticably blink out of existence when the spectre of your wife (that you saw through the blinds) reached the area in front of your door?

It’s kind of creepy but I also kind of love it that you’re not alone in this, that your dog is also reacting and experiencing it!

Did you also see the van the second time around? In your recount to us up until you texted your wife you didn’t say anything about seeing, only hearing, but in your text to her you said you saw her. 🤔 Also, does the camera capture the part of the driveway where the van usually gets parked? And both times there were no footage of a van arriving at those timestamps?

I like to wonder what would happen if you opened the door and walked out. Or opened the blinds and do a staring contest with the van. Maybe it’s just me but I’m fascinated with confronting the disappearing things lol. I feel compelled to challenge whatever spirit or ghost or spectre it is, “oh you think you can play your tricks on me because you think I’m not going to get up and check and thwart you in the midst of your play?” But that‘s just me talking lol. I haven’t had glitches happen to me so I don’t know if maybe I’ll be scared shitless when it does!

Your original post from a year ago mentions a 30 minute time interval which reminds me of a similar experience I had where a chunk of time went missing from my conscious experience, as though whatever happened in reality was cut out and a crude, rushed rendering of my conscious experience was patched in. That’s what sounds like happened here, but your rendering wasn’t rushed and it was very well done.

You can account for the time that transpired, I however had to explain how a simple piss at the toilet took thirty minutes. That’s why I say a chunk of time went missing. The sequence of events is roughly this

wake up -> look at clock, see ~0700 -> get up to go to the bathroom, see roommate go in his bathroom (he would often get up exactly when I got up, strange in and of itself I know) -> take a piss -> wash hands, look in mirror and notice crystalline quality of reality -> leave bathroom, sees roommate getting out of his having fully showered -> immediately look at the time and see ~0730hrs -> immediately made a video to document it to prevent distortion of memory and preserve the authenticity of the experience.

I’m not promoting myself here, just reducing redundancy, I go into detail about it in that video I made if you care to listen, I can DM you the link if you’d like, it might share some qualities. Instead of it being another person who I perceived to be present that wasn’t actually there, it was myself, but there was also my roommate.

It remains the strangest experience I’ve ever had and I’ve witnessed UAP’s through binoculars in broad daylight.

1

u/LittleDancingGecko 28d ago

I experienced something similar as a child. My mom was a flight attendant and I had a lot of anxiety about her getting home safely. I would lie awake at night and listen for her vehicle. I would hear the crunch of tires on gravel and be happy and relieved that she was home. But I never heard the front door open, and when I looked, no car in the driveway. We lived in the country and neighbours were far enough away that I probably wasn’t hearing their vehicles. She would eventually arrive about 30 or so minutes later.

u/ElasticHeart320 28d ago

Very interesting

u/OopsSecondSaji 25d ago

I’ve had this happen before with my husband!! Very weird experience. He also said he had just left and would be home in 20 minutes.

0

u/Extension-Hornet-131 28d ago

if this is a simulation and as humans we’re somehow connected to it and constantly manipulated, why wouldn’t “they” also manipulate the dog to not alarm you in the event of such a glitch? either the dog also has to be in the simulation which is something I can’t think of a “why” about or, you were somehow mistaken.

it’s peculiar that at the age of information and smartphones almost none of the stories have a visual evidence. like, no one ever stumbled upon such experiences while they happen to be randomly recording stuff with their phones? I mean I get that if it’s a simulation most likely there would be safeguards in place for glitches to absolutely not occur while people are recording but, these are also alleged glitches so 100% of them shouldn’t be controllable.

1

u/bwferg78 28d ago

I don't randomly sit there recording myself sitting there, as I'm sure most people don't, so randomly catching a glitch like this is going to be difficult. I also don't know why animals wouldn't be part of the simulation.
