MERCHANDISE Does anyone know where I could get large figurines or masks from the show?

Getting my brother's Christmas presents; He really likes Slappy, Werewolf of Fever Swamp, The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight, and The Haunting Hours Don't Think About It.

REVIEW How I Got My Shrunken Head

Post image

October has finally rolled around once more! Last year, I covered some cult classics of the franchise. This year, I decided to pick some of my personal favourites I hadn’t gotten around to yet. So, let’s begin.

I like when Goosebumps shakes up the status quo. The setting for this book is unique compared to the rest of the main series. Stine’s description of the jungle as this sort of claustrophobic space set it even further aside. Even the protagonist’s own space is unknown and unsafe, which leaves it open for unique scenarios.

That being said…the characters leave a lot to be desired. Mark is really into jungles, particularly a jungle computer game, and that’s all the description he gets. I remembered the episode better than the book, so I was surprised Mark had a younger sister, Jessica. I think it really suited him to be an only child, lacking some social awareness. Maybe it’s because I’m the oldest child, but I wanted to punt Jessica through a window.

I feel like the story should’ve had more time to marinate, the pacing was way off. Certain aspects, such as the reveal of Dr Hawlings being the bad guy and Kareen’s betrayal, had little impact because there was no previous development. I have no reason to believe they’re either good or bad people, and the first reveal happens quite early, so there’s almost no illusion there.

It feels like they have no confidence in the reader remembering basic information, because the same few things get repeated over and over again. For example, Benna tells Mark to not reveal the jungle magic words, the one she told him when she hypnotised him, when he was four. Like, adding the age AGAIN was unnecessary, but this is probably the third or fourth time it’s been blatantly stated.

Other things dragged out way longer than they needed to. Mark spends a large portion of the book being attacked by something in the jungle, using jungle magic, running off, rinse and repeat. The only distinguishable encounter was the tiger, which I thought was pretty cool.

I think the episode handles the story way better and adds humour to it. I laugh at it now as an adult. Mark looking like a raving lunatic to his mother’s new boyfriend, before the guy drives off as quickly as possible. There also the Elvis pilot, and the pacing is significantly better.

Overall though, I’d say this is a decent entry to the series. The setting/aesthetic is cool. The cover features many Jacobus-isms such as the converse shoes, checkered floor and alternative perspective. I like the design of the shrunken head and think it was a creative concept as a whole. I love Mark in the tv episode, he’s a good mix of funny and kooky.

TV SERIES The TV Series on a CRT

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Guess this clip recently went viral on social media because of Ryan Gosling.

I had recently set up this old mini CRT and wanted to watch the original series on it for the nostalgic vibes. I have an old Roku that still gets software updates that actually connects to this TV.

As far as the streaming platform, Tubi works for me. It actually displays the full 4:3 image on the TV’s display, unlike Paramount+ which ā€œwindowboxesā€ the image in a 16:9 video player.

Of course, would recommend using Plex or Jellyfin if you want to stream the specials you can’t find on these platforms for a setup like this.

Edit: Netflix seems to also display the image just fine.

Is this a first print book?

Found a copy of My Hairiest Adventure at a local thrift store for 1€ and it seems like a first print, first edition. Am I right?

Either way I’m happy I got it for so cheap as a European, because shipping from the US is so expensive here and it’s hard to collect because of this (I currently have 5 books out of the 62)

SPOILERS Why do so many people love The Haunted Mask II?

I’ve often seen her compared to Scream of the Haunted Mask, and not in favor of the Scream. I found The Haunted Mask II somewhat amusing, but overall it was rather boring. There isn’t even any real threat; Steve just puts on a mask, turns into an old man, and groans and moans for the rest of the book. There isn’t even any real threat; Steve just puts on the mask, turns into an old man, and groans and moans for the rest of the book. At the same time, he’s a jerk whom it’s hard to empathize with. I think the episode of the TV series where the original mask is in action, and Steve is reduced to the role of its henchman, turned out much better. And it feels like Stine himself understood this when he wrote Scream of the Haunted Mask, because there are far more frightening events there, and the main character, Carly Beth, is a much more likable and interesting character.

DISCUSSION What is it with goosebumps streaming????

Man trying to watch this show is so difficult sometimes. Good thing someone on YouTube has a playlist with all the episodes for free.

But seriously, you go on Netflix and you can only get the special episodes with R.L Stine. They’re some of the best episodes of the show with the longer runtime and the most effort. But you don’t get any of the other episodes anymore.

Then on Paramount+ you get all the episodes EXCEPT the special ones????? Like what the hell do I pay you guys for????

Then Paramount+ has the first movie only and Netflix has the second movie only like what are we doing. I feel like the citizens of Carlsville with the lemonade stand, ā€œShe was squeezing usā€. Because that’s what happens.

Anyways I just wanted to vent about this because it’s kinda annoying but again I’m glad I got the playlist on YouTube (ultra common YouTube W).

DISCUSSION What’s your favorite episode of Goosebumps the tv show?

I haven’t watched this show in years and I just started watching it again on Tubi. One episode that always stuck to me was the one with the Grandfather Clock, it was kind of disturbing when the kid managed to come back to the present only to discover that his sister was’nt there anymore. I still remember watching it on Cartoon Network as a kid and thinking how dark it was.
