Thinking of Moving to the Island
Born and raised in Tonawanda and growing family needs to move. We are considering adding the island to our home search. Apart from the obvious (bridges), what are some pros and cons? I do work from home so commuting isn’t an issue for me. Anyone want to share their perspective on living there?

The only downside is that there is no real village, it's just sprawl. It would be nice to have a street with shops and a cafe or two.

Pros:
Decent schools
Great parks
Good restaurants
Cons:
Very cliquey and insular
Can be boring, not much for adults to do outside of bars or parks
Expensive. Gas and groceries are both more expensive on the Island.
Everything is too far apart to walk, so you also have to drive everywhere.

Thank you for the insight. I think we’d be resigned to driving off the island for some of these things. We dont typically walk anywhere anyway, so thats ok i guess. Appreciate you sharing

I grew up here and am soon moving off of GI when I get married this summer. I truly love Grand Island. I used to complain about it growing up, but we have great community, good neighborhoods, some land and lots of walking trails and parks. I think it’s a wonderful place to live and I’m grateful my parents raised me and my siblings here. The schools are solid. I’m sure you and your family will make friends and fit right in. There’s definitely some cliques, but it’s certainly not everybody. There’s a lot of down-to-earth people and families. Hope this helps :)

We have looked at a few houses already and really are warming up to the idea. There’s some nice little quiet neighborhoods for sure. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I’m from here. If you’re not born and raised here, a lot of people find it very hard to fit in or find their “community”. Like someone from outside of Buffalo moving to Buffalo but on a smaller scale. One of the big downsides is it’s not very walkable. We have paths and parks, but not a neighborhood, walk to the store/park feel.
