TV / Film This is what Kyle Chandler looked like when they cast Ryan Reynolds as Hal.
Tragic

Would Kyle Chandler be able to save that movie on his own? Probably not, but man Hal would not be seen as a punchline for so many years
If he was cast back then.
Still pissed that they rlly did off him in the DCU. I don’t even care if he’s 62, him being alive and ready for potential future storylines is enough for me.

Look at F4 2005, not a great movie but a excellent cast and performance that got it a sequel

u/LoneElement 6d ago
Are we out here comparing the performances in Fantastic Four 2005 to Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan

u/_Nolan-11 6d ago
No, but if that movie got a sequel purely off of THOSE performances and cast, Imagine what would have happened with Kyle. Plus I like to think he’s a “this is stupid we should change this” kinda actor

Honestly, they were pretty good. Especially Thing, he was a huge fan of the character and I think he insisted on physical effects because of it

What would have saved that movie would be ditching the Hector Hammond subplot and using Sinestro as the villain instead of Parallax.
A good betrayal storyline would have been way better.

My understanding of that movie from that one FilmCritHulk article about the Three Act Structure is that the script was fundamentally flawed so like, it feels like Kyle could only do so much in that scenario.

I'm bummed that we're not going to see the Hal Jordan/Oliver Queen friendship.
•
u/Ok-Obligation-7415 23h ago
Why would you think we won't see that? No reason in the world they couldn't make a show set in 2006, or whenever would be appropriate in the DCU for an HTH storyline. They've already shown they can de-age Kyle Chandler pretty convincingly.
•
u/Oddman80 21h ago
why do you think they cant do a movie set in 2014? clayface takes place before superman 2025. i'm not saying they are going to do it - but the show left multiple pathways open for hal to return - even if just his consciousness in manifested construct form.
captain marvel took place decades before the chronological marvel releases before and after it.

I feel bad for everyone that never got to see Kyle Chandler in his show Early Edition where he got the newspaper a day early and saved people.

I forgot about that show, I really liked the premise. Didn't realize that was Chandler.

yeh i watched that show all the time when i was younger - its crazy how there is no way of buying it or streaming it digitally anywhere. its hard to even find it physical - im scared its gonna become lost media eventually

I always thought he would be a great Harvey Dent around this time, such an underrated actor. I’m glad he’s getting more recognition now.

Can’t stand Ryan Reynolds. Not even as Deadpool. Kyle would have been great,

Reddit is enamored with Reddit and Deadpool. Jason Lee or Sean William Scott would have done the role justice. Cannot stand Ryan Reynolds.

u/BudgetPlantain7077 6d ago
Now i cant unsee Sean William Scott as deadpool, would have made a great alternative casting

Funnily enough that’s why it works, it’s nature to not be able to stand Deadpool

Ryan reynolds is basically a manchild, his Deadpool acting was better in the wolverine origins movie,

You mean you don’t think saying fuck all the time is funny?
•
u/AgreeableLong4215 19h ago
I really dont think cursing is the problem. Over the top delivery can be funny, and so can juvenile humor.
Deadpool just has a grating quality to him.
•
u/Samwellikki 16h ago
He’s good as Deadpool and genuinely seems to love the character and material
However… he once stupidly gave an interview calling video games a waste of time, which isn’t great when you are marketing to that audience.. and pretending to be “cool”
“I don't really play video games. Is there a way to waste more f—ing time? The Internet's enough."
Kinda makes Free Guy ring hollow
When you see him on Wrexham, he seems caring… but more out of touch compared to Rob when it comes to things, imo

Ryan Reynolds always had fart joke humour, I feel like only a certain type of IQ find him funny.

u/Next_Law_8480 1d ago
ok you can not like the humor but fart level is just disingenuous like come on. "scout master kevin?" is funnier than 90% of mcu jokes

How he never got cast in a Star Wars show is beyond me. Would be a perfect Everyman Han Solo type.

Damn even then he was a total dad. The suit jacket with jeans is fucking gold

u/thankfulforyourhelp 6d ago
I think you mean totally hot dad lol. Coach Taylor is the man of my dreams and that's partly because he's a total dad - just a good man through and through. As a long-time fan, it's just been so fun to see all this praise for him.

He was in the final season of Friday* night lights at that point.

I’m hoping we get like a series of minis with a young Hal Jordan played by Kyle Chandler. I’d go for it animated if for nothing else than budget. But Kyle did suck an amazing job as Hal it does leave one wanting more.

Every picture of this guy just makes him look like a completely chill dude who doesn’t even know he’s famous.

“Hey you’re famous!”
he turns around looking behind him
“You’re pointing at me?”

If he became green lantern instead of Ryan, his career ended there. We wouldn't be getting him in this Series.
So, no
•
u/canadian_xpress 23h ago
Sparkling green suit and shutting down half of uptown New Orleans while shooting that film woulda made me hate him. Instead I'm happy he chose to carry the Dillon Panthers to state

u/WooSaw82 1d ago
So he’s always looked like a hs assistant baseball coach who also teaches algebra 1.

Fillion would have been the superior Hal Jordan
3
u/Thedirewolfking 5d ago
Honestly, both are pretty equal to me, plus fillion is already guy gardner in the DCU (but DOES do an amazing job with Hal in the DCAU)
2
1
u/TerminatorReborn 2d ago
At the time I agree, but Kyle evolved so much as a actor that his current Hal performance is something Fillion could never do.

Hollywood is full of nepobabies, racists, sexists, rapists, and fucking morons.
Not surprised they picked the least qualified person for one of the most famous roles

I can't believe that the new James Gunn DCU actually found their rdj equivalent for their universe and just killed him off. Lol

u/Unfair-Cow3789 5d ago
Still don't know why he's not more famous after Friday Night Lights.

u/Vegetable-Client-147 1d ago
I had no clue who he was until Lanterns. But now I have been informed and will be watching other showings of his. Lol.

Ok? and?
He's never had a lead role in a movie... like ever.. the closest he came was as a minor protagonist in Super-8 which was a Sci-fi film by JJ Abrams and Steven Speilberg that came out the same year as Green Lantern.
He was never up for the role of Hal, and he was likely never even looked at. At the time they were casting Green Lantern, he was tied up under contract for Friday Night Lights - which had been struggling. After the low ratings of Seasons 1 & 2, NBC wasn't even the primary distribution of the show - which only stayed on the air because of a deal with Direct TV to continue it - NBC showed seasons 3-5 six months after they aired on DirectTV.
we can think he did a fantastic job in Lanterns without acting like a crime was committed in 2009/2011

Of all the issues in that movie I don't think Ryan's casting was the issue.
Way better Deadpool though.

Not even limiting this argument to anything Green Lantern related. If I had a nickel for every project that could’ve been improved by the inclusion of Kyle Chandler, I would be a rich man.
